[Vash arrives in style. By style we of course mean the red duster jacket he always wears and hair looking like an upside down broom. He was a little uncomfortable walking in, but had been trying to remind himself that he was going to be at least a little more open with who he is.

It's just over a hundred and thirty years of hiding habits are hard to break.

So while at most parties he's social today he's a bit more quiet. Hanging at the bar and drinking a whiskey. Wondering how he should approach someone. 'Hey? You old? Awesome! Me too! What's your sign?' No wait. That last part is part of his failed pick up routine. Oh man, what if someone asks him what he is? How is he going to explain it to someone not from his planet?

Alright Vash. You can do this. There's someone who's just walked over to the bar or snack table. Don't mess this up. Smile and say something.]

Hey. Good food here, huh?

[Yuan was about to answer that it's his first time here and he has no idea. But then the rest of his senses catch up and he realizes who it is.

He can practically feel his blood pressure start to rise. He was already tense, still finding his feet here, and worse, he'd been hoping to encounter a familiar face. Socializing with strangers is easier when you have at least an acquaintance for moral support.

Now it's too late to take back that wish.]

...Of course. Of course you're here - a mana signature like that, of course you're immortal or something like it.

[There's a definite undertone of 'why is my life like this' in his voice.]

Mana signature? Is that like a feeling or something?

[Yuan nods, and reluctantly explains:] All living beings have mana flowing through their bodies, and everyone's individual signature is distinct, like a fingerprint. You'd need a magitech scanner to identify someone by their mana signature, but any half-elf can sense them to some degree - can tell the difference between elves, half-elves, humans, and...other things.

[He side-eyes Vash.] I don't have any idea what you are, but I can tell that your power is on a different level from mine.

[Vash nods along with Yuan's explanation as if he's listening. But his slightly slacked jaw makes it look like he's not following anything Yuan is saying.]

Well, I'm what people on my planet would call an Independent Plant. [Saying it out loud so easily felt so wrong, but trying to be honest. He keeps reminding himself of this fact. People here aren't overly likely to be afraid of a Plant.]

Sooooooo, that makes you a half-elf? [Maybe he could follow along!]

Independent...Plant. [That will earn a skeptical look. He's never actually sensed a sapient plant-person, but Vash certainly doesn't look much like he'd imagine one to be. No leaves or anything.]

And yes, I am. I hope that's not a problem. [In a tone that makes clear that 1) he's used to it being a problem for some people, and 2) if it is, he's happy to make it your problem instead of his.]

[Sorry were you expecting Vash to explain what an Independent Plant is? That's a lot of effort.]

I only see it as being a problem if you're only allowed to like other half elfs or something.

[Elf is at least a term he understands. He wonders what the other half is. Human? Unicorn? Who knows? Is it rude to ask? It's probably rude to ask.]

[For now, since Vash doesn't seem inclined to talk about it, Yuan decides to assume it means he's somehow connected to his world's Mana Tree. That would explain a lot.]

...Heh. I won't pretend there aren't people who would prefer that, but no. [He looks distant and thoughtful for a moment.] I'm not like them.

[Vash can sense that with an answer like that and look in Yuan's eyes there's a long history there.]

Well, I'm glad you're not. Would have made life here very difficult because I'm not really sure how many half-elfs there are in the fleet. I've seen some elf-elfs, but don't know about half's.

That and I might have been in a bit more trouble if you didn't like others enough to help me out before.

[Caster's been just keeping an eye on everyone, but the mention of the food seems to set something off in her.]

Absolutely not! Have you seen what they're attempting to pass off as food!? It's a travesty, an absolute abomination!

[Vash jumps. Not expecting such a vocal and honest response.] Yeah, well, I know the size could be a lot bigger. Or do you mean something else?

They are trying to serve with a broken plate.

I think it's suppose to be 'artsy' or something. I mean, what it's served on doesn't really change the taste.

"Artsy"? It's absolutely, disgustingly rude, you know? It's looking down on the person you're serving to, like they don't even deserve a real plate.

Or maybe they're trying to recycle? Or maybe they have a really clumsy waiter and it's the only plates they have left? [Vash shrugs.] I don't really know, but I can kind of see your point about it possibly coming off as rude.

[castrationfist]

"Possibly" nothing. I've cursed people for lesser insults.

Cur-Cursing!? Don't you think that's going a bit too far? Especially just over plates?

[Hey, she remembers that goofy head of hair. For a moment she debates switching back over to fox mode, but since she doesn't want to leave her clothing in the open like that she just sips at her wine.]

I haven't had any yet.

[Vash looks happy that such a pretty face is talking to him. Not realising that this is the same fox he scolded for wasting food before.]

Well, for how small it all is you'd hope it would at least taste amazing! I've never been a fan of food in finger sizes.

[She'll let that get out eventually. Probably.]

Sure. Why not? I mean, small is suppose to be fancy and that means good right?

So, want to try to puffy thing or the thing I think is some kind of cracker?

Crackers are little boring. Let's start with the puffy thing.

Alright. Hold on I'll get us some. HEY WAITER! [Vash shouts loudly across the bar. He walks over the a floating plate and comes back with a few puff pastries.]

Here you are! I hope they're good!

[aigue]

[Renart twitches her tail in anticipation. Puff pastry is always good, right? She'll take one when Vash returns, popping it into her mouth and chewing.]

Mm, it's delicious.

[But then, she isn't a picky fox.]

[Vash pops his own in at the same time and chews. Luckily he's probably as picky about food as Renart is.] Yeah! It isn't half bad! I heard once that fancy food doesn't taste as good, but I liked that!

What else should we try?
