[There's a few moments of silence and low humming as the speaker figures out how this whole communicator thing works. There's a quiet "Ah!" and then the message begins. The voice is either a low pitched female or a higher pitched male, and there is little in the way of images to make it clear which is which. Fun times.]

I really wonder who would find it that fascinating to watch other people live their lives, but I suppose in space [That is still SO weird to say] you must not get a lot of other entertainments. I've read the guide on your network, buuuuut, well. It's a little dry, don't you think?

So why don't you tell me what would you say is the most important thing to know about being here? For example, this "e-lec-tri-city" thing is very useful. It's nice to be able to see so well, even if it's very, very bright all the time. And this little pocket communication thing is cute. What do you think?

[Once he's out from the bathroom he got locked in - thanks Handsome Jack - Okita spends some time acquainting himself with his new ship. Aka, he spends time slinking around and finding all the weird nooks and crannies in which he can hide stuff, himself, or possibly...other "stuff" in case it's necessary. Crewmates can find him anywhere on the ship wearing a white kimono and opening up vents and peering under cabinets, tapping on wall panels and trying to break into places he probably shouldn't go. All of this before he ever introduces himself, because hahaha manners.

A phone case is, obviously, a case for phones. They protect them if you drop them, and most importantly, look cute.

Ehh... Well, I suppose this is the problem with being so famous.

[She sounds rather annoyed.]

And, what if I was? Do old legends of youkai interest you so much?

I suppose they do. It's a legend of my country, a particularly interesting one.

[but she sounds annoyed, so perhaps she isn't named after the spirit.]

I always found it rather sad. She lived so long, trying to find love, and was only met with heartbreak.

[... okay, that gets her attention.]

That's no version of the tale I've ever heard. The fox Daji fled eastward after her defeat in China, and incarnated, taking a new name to overthrow the emperor, was discovered by Abe, slayed an army at the fields of Nasu, and was killed in turn.

How does the story you know go?

Quite similar, actually. But she wandered from land to land, her beauty attracting the attentions of the most powerful men of each country. They would marry and her power would slowly make each one sick until she was driven from her latest home and fled to the next country.

She eventually came to Japan and became Tamamo-no-Mae, a beautiful courtesan who became a favorite of the emperor. They were very much in love, but her power was too much. Discovered by the safe, Abe, she was killed and her spirit came to live in a rock for centuries. She repented and lamented how her love never came to fruition. She was released to the afterlife by a kind monk who heard her tale.

[He sighs a little.]

She never found a home because her fearsome strength could not be controlled. I always thought it so sad.

[There's a long pause with no reply as she takes that in. That... Was never a version of her story she'd ever heard. And somehow, it moves her, to know that there were some out there who believed the best of her.

On an impulse, she switches the communication from audio to video, showing herself. Pink hair, revealing robes, and most importantly... Fuzzy fox ears on her head, and a tail swishing around behind her. And if she's a little misty-eyed, surely she's managing to hide that well enough. Surely.]

... It has a few details wrong, but that's perhaps the closest version to the truth I've ever heard a human tell. Normally, they're all, 'fox demon! Pure evil!', and go on and on to make me the villain in any tale they can.

[As he suspected, the vitriol in her voice wasn't for nothing. After seeing her, it's obvious that she is the fabled spirit - and not at all terrifying. He takes a bit to figure out how to turn on his video also, but eventually gets it to work. When it turns on, he adjusts the communicator and checks the screen to see if she can see him lying in his bunk in his plain white kimono.]

People fear what they don't understand. I'm sorry that your tale had become so distorted over time, but I see that you are just as beautiful as the stories suggested.

[He smiles and waves at her.]

[She giggles and waves back, cheerfully.]

You are a flatterer, aren't you? Well, I don't mind, but I'll gladly accept any praise and offerings in the form of fried tofu!

[He laughs in return.]

Once I earn enough, I shall send some your way. I'm afraid right now, all I have is what you see and it isn't much.

Ooh, you are kind. I'll await it eagerly, then... Er, it was... Soujirou-san, wasn't it?

Yes, in a way.

[Telling Tamamo-no-Mae might not cause problems for him, but this is still on an open network so he can't just go putting his real name on blast.]

It isn't likely a name you would recognize anyway. I'm from far in your future and rather insignificant.

I'm used to the same, you know. Well, normally it's me that my name gets killed, and the names of my enemies getting them killed... Well, you don't need to care about that.

Hm? I can't argue with 'insignificant', but I came here from the year 2030, you know?

I don't know yet if my enemies are here. I wouldn't wish to put you in danger, even if you could protect yourself.

But 2030? [He had no idea when in time that is. he never learned the Gregorian calendar and it isn't included in the augment.] Were you resurrected for some reason?

You know, even after I cut off eight of my tails, I'm still far stronger than any human. Only another Heroic Spirit could really threaten me like this.

[She gets the feeling he doesn't know from the lack of surprise.]

Well, it's about nine hundred years after I died, for reference. The circumstances behind it are a pain to explain, but I was resurrected to fulfill my wish of becoming a good wife!

[Yep, none of that made sense. He can guess what a heroic spirit might be, but in reality he'd be so off the mark it would be distressing.

But holy crap here comes the surprise. 900 years? Nine hundred years?? That's so far beyond his own concept of time that he had no idea how to deal with that other than to file it away and ignore it like he has for 99% of the other information he's gained since coming here and being displaced in time and space.]

I- I see. Then by the time you are returned to the earth, I am long since dead and gone.

I hope you can fulfill your wish though, no matter how far in the future you must go.
