Tyrion kept poking at it like it might bite him.]

...so just out of curiosity, what precisely is going on this time of year for most of you? There seems to be a lot of ... giving recently.

[He really just wants to make sure no one has gotten some sort of alien disease. Really.]

Normally? It would be the Feast of Winter Veil where I come from. Giving gifts like that is actually normal for Winter Veil, I guess it is for other holidays on other worlds too.

Besides it being fun, snowball fights and forts? [Even though he hasn't built one in years.] Greatfather Winter comes to visit, it's when we celebrate togetherness and welcome in the new year.

And more than likely, it is. Friends and family exchange gifts normally, since those are the people who would know best what kind of gift you would like.

... Is that so? [Huh.] Where I come from, Winter is the coming of death and the White Walkers. The gift we grant one another seems to be a reprieve from normal hostilities.

A popular one Earth is called Christmas - a roughly month long feeling of cheer and goodwill. It's about being around family and friends and enjoying them, and you can also present them with gifts as a show of that appreciation.

I see ... so who is this Christ person? Is he rather important enough to get his own holiday? Some sort of god, I suppose.

Well, he comes from the Christian religion on Earth. He is the son of their god, and December 25th - Christmas - is supposedly to celebrate is birthday. That is the most currently history of it and what it stood for at its most popular height.

There's some further back history to it, but as it is celebrated now in my time, it is more about the general feeling of goodwill and peace and being together, though some people to continue to celebrate the religious aspects of it.

So he is ... the son of a God, and they have a specific day for his birth. I'm rather impressed - we can only pinpoint our religious holidays to a general week.

[Holidays weren't really a thing in the Wasteland. It's hard to celebrate something year to year when you're not even sure what day it is, and when each day itself is a blessing that you lived to see it. Furiosa is curious, however, about the package Tyrion's got.]

[She's set up in her hotel room; one of the premium themed rooms that she actually shelled out for (after getting a snow-themed room which she NOPED the hell out of), with a private pool, palm trees, and ambient bird calls in the background.]

It is the holiday for giving gifts to ones you care for. St. Nicholas' spirit clearly does reach the fleet.

It is tradition. If you are well-behaved, St. Nicholas would bestow you with gifts. If you were bad, Krampus would visit in his stead.

...let me see if I understand this, if one is good, one gets gifts. If one is bad, something called a Krampus would come for you? I take it Krampus is rather nasty?

You're right on both accounts. My grandmother used to tell us tales of St. Nicholas and his dark shadow, Krampus. Children who were good and behaved through the year had no worries to be had. But those who were mischievous or ill-behaved got a visit from Krampus, instead.

... I had no idea I had to give out gifts to begin with. [Namedays were one thing. Weddings, births, notable accomplishments. Just to give gifts? Seemed odd to him.] Well, I suppose I should find something for, well, people.

Oh! Oh! I know this! It's Winter Holiday Gift Fest, which is Christmas and Solstice and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and Festivus all together and you give lots of presents to your friends so they know you don't secretly hate them!

When it falls varies, but mine is called Hanukkah. I usually just end up celebrating Christmas with the others though.
