At the risk for earning a reputation as a party planner, I have a thing for everyone to attend again. Don't worry, lots of other people are helping pull it together. It's going to be on New Year's Eve, but the real event is the countdown to Winn's birthday which is also on the first. It's going to be in a club we rented out for this in the red shift district. Starts around seven-ish. Ends when you pass out?

It's kind of a surprise maybe? At least the part where it's for his birthday. And if you don't know Winn but you still want to come that's fine too. You can trade a gift for Winn for a free drink at the bar. Otherwise, bring some money. Cake's on us though.

[Birthday/New Year's Party]
[The space is well decorated and so glittered you can probably tell Wrath was part of the team putting this together. Lots of Winn's friends came out to help whether it was getting decorations up, managing food, music, or chipping in to buy out the space and a drink for anyone bringing a gift. Not to mention drinks for the birthday boy all night.

There's a table for presents and another one with a spread of openly available food though the bar has appetizers you can buy too. There's a big cake at one end because of course there is and some punch that didn't start the night spiked at least. There's space for dancing and a karaoke machine set up on a small raised platform for those who want to try their hand at entertainment.

The night really kicks off when Winn walks in and instead of a balloon drop there's a fluffy blue stuffed bear drop. Feel free to take one of those home. There are a lot.

When midnight comes closer some people will file out to one of the observation areas to get a good view of the nebula for the big countdown. Bring your own person to kiss!

It could always be worse. Trust me. [ and like a bar-shark, she's keen to win some points for being impressive. ] I once spent a few months on a ship, back home. A space ship, sure, with engines that were powered by belief.

I kid you not.

Belief? Belief in like, God or fairies or that everything would turn out alright?

[He's Impressed, alright.]

Because... wow, yeah, that's not a requirement for the faint of heart.

That last one -- kinda like where belief crosses paths with imagination. My trademark acerbic wit and cutting commentary was less than welcome during the journey.

Aw, and here I thought someone with said cutting commentary would have a super active imagination.

[Not that Stefan has much room to talk, given that his brand of "creativity" is fiction-writing (and stress baking).]

Hey! I'd like to think so. Really. [ a half-shrug. ] The ship's captain? Not so much.

Which then makes me ask, how did someone like that become captain? First come, first served?

It was his ship. We were just -- hitchhikers. Kinda. [ a crinkle of her nose. ] So I guess it was exactly like first come, first served.

Great. So the Fleet's system might actually be universal.

[Stefan didn't exactly sign up to be captain. It was assigned by default.]

Not so universal. Noh's a kree warrior. And the ship was a kree ship. He -- [ wait, this is worth explaining. ] Alien, by the way. Long story.

Well, normally? I have nothing but time, so when you're up for it... Tell me all your long stories, and uh, get boring medical school ones in exchange.

[Or fairy tales, should she actually like those.]

-- Actually? [ and kate says this with zero self-consciousness. she doesn't even wince. ] Calling it a long story was my way of side-stepping the fact that he's my ex. And no cute guy cutting a rug with a gal ever wants to hear her yammer on about exes. It's pretty much common knowledge.

I don't know. Even if he was your ex, he was important to you - and any guy who'd want something long-term should respect that.

[Or maybe Stefan's being too generous, considering how often he brings up his ex-girlfriends in casual conversation. They taught him a lot, they broadened his horizons, and well? With the exception of Misa? Their stories weren't tragic.]

Now, if it were a burning trainwreck, I'd agree. Best not to mention the ex the first time around.

Noh-Varr wasn't a burning trainwreck. Thankfully. [ kate's nose crinkles with indecision. ] But he definitely wasn't a walk in the park, either. Ever get dumped mid-fight? And I'm not talking about one of those it's your turn to do the dishes fights. I mean...the whole team's duking it out with an interdimensional parasite and your boyfriend, fighting back-to-back with you, decides he'd rather go steady with the villainess in the gimp mask.

[ she raises her right hand. ] Not a word of lie. Ok, so maybe it is closer to trainwreck. Now that I say it out loud.

[Ah, shit. She had been trying to avoid it and he just brings it out front and center – classic Salvatore move. He furrows his brow, suddenly far more concerned than he was five minutes ago.]

Only because he was a total dick. [Who does that?? Besides his brother??] I'm sorry. You deserve way better than that.

I do. [ deserve better. ] I definitely do. Which is why I'm in no rush to date anyone else. Not until they're thoroughly vetted.

[ -- a wave of her hand. ] Don't apologize. It's old news. Water far under the bridge.

Let's see... lengthy interview, fantastic references, maybe one or two trial dates to see if it all works out?

[That is the voice of someone who's been around the arranged marriage circuit. Stefan relaxes a little, though even his smile seems apologetic.]

Still. I've had my fair share of awkward dates and girlfriends. Hasn't entirely been all sunshine and roses.

Good. It shouldn't be -- leave the sunshine and the roses for the romantic comedies. [ ... ] I sound bitter. Do I sound bitter? I'm not. Honest. It's just that I'm trying this thing where I focus on things other than dating.

[ but before she puts a damper on anything: ] Uhm. Long-term dating.

Oh, I'm not exactly looking either.

[He waves a hand in casual dismissal, as if to say "don't worry about it." Stefan's not sure what signals he sent out tonight, but his heart isn't broken or devastated.]

Even if I were, most people usually run in the opposite direction when I say I'm Muslim.

Please tell me that's hyperbole and no one's actually run away from you.

Very much hyperbole. But it's a problem for people who want something casual, since I can't... really offer that.

[He can offer a couple of dances, and even close friendship, but after his last two girlfriends, he's a lot less certain that he can offer more.]

-- So they just up and walk away from what could otherwise be a great friendship, just 'cause they can't, y'know, get it?

[ fickle bastards. clearly, this bothers peggy. ]

More or less. [He sighs, more than a little resigned to the idea.] Not everyone's in the market for friendship.

See -- I never understood that. The people who see others in their life as like...all-or-nothing romantic interests. [ ... ] I mean, I get one night stands. But that's different from getting to know someone, realizing a relationship isn't going in that direction, and just dropping it. I'm actually on relatively good terms with my exes.

[ ... ] Even the alien.

Impressive. I can't say my relationships ended the same way. Most of my exes are on good terms too, but one...

[He hesitates. Kate's been open about who she is, but he doesn't want to rip off the band-aid and reveal the vampire card on the first dance.] I hurt her pretty badly. We were still talking, when I was pulled here, but I don't think we'll ever be friends again.

I'm sorry to hear it. I really, truly am. [ she touches a hand to his elbow -- complete sympathy settling into her expression. ] Would another dance take your mind off of it? I feel bad. New Years shouldn't involve thinking about regrets.
