[ Kubo wakes up with a jerk, fumbling around before he realizes it's not dark. The fire isn't lit and — this wasn't the cave he grew up in. Groping around, Kubo felt the solid presence of his shamisen, the two strings intact and breathes a sigh of relief. Then he carefully slips off the bed, slinging it over his back. With his one eye, he looked around. And pinches himself. ]

Okay. Not dead. Where am I? This isn't the Heavens . . . is it?

[ He had been sure everything had been settled, but Kubo hadn't exactly had time to learn the exact nature of what lingers above. ]

[ Huh. Kubo eyes him warily. ]

You've been there, haven't you?

[Crowley flashes him a grin with teeth a little too sharp to be human. ]

Oh yes. The other place too- and if you're wondering, you're not there, either. You're in space.

Okay, but what exactly is in space?

Depends on the star system we're in. That changes. Otherwise? A big fat load of nothing.

It's different from what I pictured it to be. What's a star system though?

It's usually a planet, or a bunch of moons- or maybe just a waystation. Either way, it's a place where we stop- we get to them every month or two, and stick around them for about the same amount of time.

Suppose they have to keep us from being too bored.

So it's like . . . we're traveling.

[ That's worth noting. Kubo has always enjoyed traveling. ]

Yeah, pretty much. Travelling through space and pretty much stuck following where the Marsiva goes- but travelling all the same.

Does anyone have any adventures?

Well, I suppose the adventurous sorts go out and find adventures to get entangled in. Not really my scene, but there's plenty of people here who enjoy that sort of thing.

I'll ask! It helps to learn a few new stories for my act.

Okay, colour me marginally intrigued. What's your act?

I'm a story-teller. I use my shamisen to perform for the crowds.

Really? How about that. Well, you've landed yourself quite the place here, then. Entertainment is the name of the game.

I tell stories. I don't create them using people's lives.

You'll find the stories will just happen around you regardless.

But you never know, the story telling gig might be enough to earn you some nice credits. Don't think it's a niche many people have exploited here, yet.

Daily life can be busy enough without trying to tell it in song.

[ And he's always kept busy, trying to earn enough money for a living. ]

True. But everyone has their downtime. It's important, that. Taking time to sit back and relfect and whatnot.

[ He considers that. ]

I don't think I've had time to do that.

[ Everything happened so fast. ]

Well. You'll have plenty of time for that now. Congrats.

[ Kubo can't help making a face. ]

I think I'll pass.

[The demon chuckles. ]

Afraid you won't have much choice in that one, kiddo. It'll happen if you like it or not.

I'm not that much of a kid.

[ He certainly doesn't feel like one anymore. ]

Suppose you're not. You're the kind who's seen too much to really call yourself that any more, hmm?

[He knows the type. ]

[ His eye doesn't narrow but it's a near thing. ]
