Hey everybody, this is Sorey. I'm just checking in, seeing if everything's okay. Oh, and paperwork for new upgrades will be coming in soon, so if there's anything anybody would like to see upgraded, cast your votes now!

Oh also, we don't have any lab support personnel. I know Mikleo's been doing some stuff but if you know anybody looking to transfer who'd like the use of the lab, could you let 'em know? I'll include a call out in my public broadcast in a sec.

I'm kind of curious; so there are a lot of different kinds of forces or energies here that are a lot like the ones back on my planet, but they don't seem to behave the same way here. Like the rules are different. Is anybody else running against that?

And as an aside, if there's any potential lab personnel looking for a place, the Huntress has an unoccupied lab, for now.

I used to be the lab support here, when I was first on the Huntress. I've forgotten a lot of what I used to know since my augment changed, but if we need it I could always switch back...I think.

You don't have to worry about it; Mikleo's mentioned he wants to switch. I think he thinks you're much better suited for talking to people.

[Shirley's visibly tickled by that. The wording is a little funny, but more than that it feels good for personal reasons.]

...I'm glad. If Mikleo wants to switch, then I'll be happy to stay where I am.

Did you decide to switch your augment yourself, then?

No, I didn't. It must have been something the Atroma did when they brought me back...or something.

[She frowns for a second, still not quite sure what happened in those months she lost.]

I don't know why they did that, but at least it wasn't something bad.

Are there any bad augments? I mean, besides the obvious, it's not great we have them at all, but at least they provide us with something useful.

Well...I don't think I would have done us as much good if I were a security officer.

I bet you'd be great! You could be, like, the 'kill them with kindness' type of security officer. [sorey, friend, those do not even exist,]

[They don't exist, but the thought makes Shirley laugh so it could be worse.]

I think my friend Chloe would be much better at it, since she was a knight from the mainland. Or Will, the sheriff in town.

You know, I wonder if all the security officers in the Fleet are like that. With a background in law enforcement or military or something. [that 'or something' is reserved for dezel, professional revenger-slash-mother hen]

I think Varric might have been. He was the first security officer here. Or...he was a storyteller, but I remember when we all first got here he was angry because the Atroma had taken his crossbow.

[To be fair his crossbow seemed to have a lot of sentimental value to it for more than the weaponry, but she's sure he knew how to use it well.]

I'm not sure about Maedhros myself, but Dezel has tactical support and he definitely knows how to fight. [Viciously.] In fact, a lot of people here are pretty used to combat. I was actually surprised to find out that Sora doesn't really know how to fight at all.

Hm...I've got my eres, too. And a lot of our past crewmates had the ability to fight, too.

[Not all of the crew she remembers; she's unsure about Komaeda and Elize in particular. But many of them, for sure.]

You don't think that could be for a reason, do you?

I can't think of why it would be, not with other people around who can't fight.

...then again, being able to fight and actually having training are totally different things. Maybe there IS a connection.

Maybe. I've never really had formal training, myself. But I can hold my own!

[She's still a teeny bit defensive about that, though it's nothing against Sorey. Shirley is a girl with things to prove.]

Heyy, ditto! [Grins and holds a fist up to the camera for a fistbump] We can be the students of the 'learned as needed' school!

Really?

[She hadn't known that about Sorey, but it makes sense actually. It makes her feel a little better, too.

Shirley has never fistbumped in her life, but she gets the idea - like a high five, right? - and tentatively knocks her own fist against Sorey's with a shy smile.]

Well...good.

[GIDDY!!! that's his first virtual fistbump :))))] I learned it mostly just for hunting for food, so when I met my friend Alisha, she was all like, what in the world are you doing? She thought it was neat though!

[That's cute, actually. Shirley giggles at the thought of Sorey's adventures fighting, say, a fortress turtle instead of a bear. Apparently he's adapted well!]

I've never been hunting before. Actually, I wasn't able to use my eres until just recently. But I had to learn quickly when things got dangerous, so now I'm not too bad.

Your eres? Is that like an arte?

An art?

Um, an eres is...a blessing given by Nerifes. Crystal eres let you use magic, and iron eres make you more powerful in physical combat.

[So basically, it's an arte.]

Huh...how do you get the blessing? Is it like something you're born with? [Those sound like the difference between hidden artes and seraphic artes, actually.]

All Ferines receive the blessing, for their devotion to Nerifes. Some Orerines receive it too, although it's much rarer and I don't know the reason why. But, um...if Nerifes wishes to revoke its blessing, the Merines has the power to take it away.

[Still feeling pretty guilty about that one.]

[Shirley doesn't mind talking about her mistakes, but she appreciates the gesture.]

Thank you, Sorey. Yes, I did. One of the first things I did as Merines was take the eres from all Orerines. Most were returned when we calmed Nerifes, but it did cause trouble for a lot of people.

[She frowns, because she'd been too caught up to care much at the time but it's not exactly a happy memory now. She remembers being powerless, easily.]

And actually, even myself...I lost the ability to use my powers for years, after failing my first Rite of Accession. I'd rejected Nerifes to do that, so it only made sense that I would lose its blessing. I've really only learned how to use my powers after everything with Nerifes calmed down.
