It's the only right way to start 2017.

"As far as I'm concerned, rule one of the 'making edible food' club is using the flavoured protein very sparingly." Introductions done, he helps himself to a waffle and a bit of fruit and takes a seat, levering off a square with the edge of his fork. "Once you get the hang of mixing flavors and textures you can make it mimic sausage, but that's not exactly high praise."

"I'll need to make a note of that."

The flavored protein sounds absolutely disgusting.

He looks thrilled. Except not at all.

"... One would think that if people could create giant floating spaceships, they could master the art of decent food supplements."

"Who knows. Maybe sourcing all of our own decent ingredients at stops and waystations is supposed to build character."

Eugene pauses to take a bite of the waffle, humming in unmistakable appreciation with the first few perfect crunchy-to-chewy moments. He needs a moment to savour the whole thing before he swallows, already queueing up another careful forkful.

"Now that is a waffle. What are you using for leavening in these?"

"Oh, nothing too spectacular - it simply was a matter of trial and error. I'll give you the recipe if you'd like; some of it is merely the strange ingredients the ship supplies us with. There is this particular gel that makes a good substitute for yeast that makes a perfect leavening that you must fiddle with. It nearly surprised the socks of me with how well it reacts with flour."

Listen to him, prattling on! He is just absolutely relieved that Eugene's enjoying them. He had been biting his nails over the poolish, because that's just how serious of a butler-cum-chef he is, alright.

"It is sort of fun, though, isn't it? Making something out of whatever the waystations provide?"

"Oh, absolutely. Some variety in the diet does a lot to stave of the cabin fever you get in empty space." He gestures vaguely with his fork, back in the direction of the cargo bay and his waiting shuttle. He is not getting bored with this topic any time soon. "If you're interested in a jar for your kitchen, I've been keeping a sourdough starter on my ship. It's probably not as quick as the yeast substitute, but it turns out a pretty nice loaf of bread."

"That would be absolutely fantastic, Mr. — "

Wait.

"My apologies, I didn't catch a name?"

"Oh- wow, look at me. Tearing into your food before I even introduce myself." He makes sure his hand is clean before offering it to shake, smiling self-consciously. "Woods. Eugene Woods."

"Mr. Woods - Edwin Jarvis. A pleasure."

He shakes the hand, formal and firm.

"And it's not a problem whatsoever. I'm actually used to strangers eating my food; my employer has quite the company at times, so I'm used to serving others without so much as a first name or a hello."

He's humored by it, though, even if he rolls his eyes at Mr. Stark's parties and get-togethers.

"Be that as it may, I try not to be work for people." He gives a wry grin, settling back again. "Sounds exciting, though. What do you do?"

"I'm a butler -- my master of the house, Mr. Stark, he's quite the intelligent millionaire. An inventor, actually; he's working on a decent prototype for hover cars at the moment." With some... failures. Some. Jarvis has helped dispose of failed versions of said cars, but Howard is nothing if not determined.

Especially when ingesting copious amounts of coffee.
