[ When Kirk's image comes on the screen, he isn't his usual, happy, confident self. His face is more serious, seeming withdrawn and there is a tenseness in his jaw, as if he were grinding his teeth. He is silent for several seconds, looking as if he is gathering words, wondering how much to say.

[ okay right into it! winn does his best to block the blows. he doesn't do as badly as he thinks, but he's really not used to jim being this ferocious. ]

He knows he's being unfair. Winn isn't ready for the onslaught Kirk presents, even though he's holding back from the full depths of his anger and grief. He won't hurt Winn (much), but he'll end up with bruises, and he certainly isn't giving him the usual openings to fight back or counter.
He stops after about twenty minutes, panting hard and trickling sweat. ]

winn's relief is pretty impossible to hide when jim calls it. he's breathing hard, drenched in sweat, and can already feel some bruises forming. his muscles hurt, and his heart is beating harder than it ever has in one of their lessons.
this is probably good. he needs to learn to deal with this - a real attacker won't go easy on him and won't give him openings, after all - and he's proud himself for not curling into a ball on the floor, not calling it quits, and not being broken beyond repair by the end of it. he managed to block a fair amount of blows considering he's never trained this intensely.
but he's glad it's over.
he nods at jim, and throws him a bottle of water before collapsing on the floor himself. he's exhausted. ]
