[ it's probably unfortunate that the network is left open and broadcasting, because tadashi awakes with a jolt and a gasp and sits up fast in his bunk on the marsiva. he isn't sure where he is, but he knows this wasn't where he was, and it's clear there's some mental scrambling going on as he desperately tries to slot in place the very few pieces of the puzzle he has. ]

Professor Callaghan?

[ had something happened? was this the hospital? ]

Hiro? Guys - what's going on?

[ ACTION: ]

[ and until the shuffle, tadashi will be found... pretty much investigating everything he can about the marsiva. he might not have an engineer augment, but he still finds it all pretty ridiculously fascinating. if he's not too absorbed into whatever he's doing, he's equally likely to flag any friendly-looking faces down.

might as well get to know his fellow... space... travelers, right? (wow, that was gonna take some getting used to.) ]

[ Steffa gasps, then immediately scoots closer to wrap him in a tight hug ]

Oh, Maker.

[ So many hair pets, Hiro. SO MANY. ]

This is good, though, right?

[He can't believe this is happening. He leans into the hug, but he's not letting go of that comm.]

I didn't think--I mean I--... I knew it could happen...

[ who is she how do you know her where ARE you hiro ]

Hey, I'm right here. [ firmly, because he's sick with dread and adrenaline after that reaction from him: ] Are. You. Hurt?

[shit, oops, tadashi's upset. He looks up from steffa's arms and shakes his head.]

I'm not hurt. We can't see each other yet.

[It's starting to hit him that tadashi has no idea what happened. That's easy enough to grasp, though.]

[ okay, hiro, good: some of the worst panic is draining from his face, leaving just confusion and concern in its wake. ]

Why wouldn't I be able to see you? [ his eyes tick to steffa, but that can wait until things make a little more sense. voice softening: ] Hiro, why are you crying? Talk to me.

It's--[at least steffa knows his hesitation and why he can't say it. He wipes his eyes.]

... I want to wait until we talk in person. You're gonna be stuck on the Marsiva until Saturday. That's the ship you're on. We can't dock there, and you'll get transferred to one of the ships in the fleet to be part of the crew. You should know what your job's gonna be already. [See, now that he's talking, he can't make himself stop.]

They took us out of earth, maybe even our entire universe.

[ it's incredibly clear that tadashi doesn't like that answer, but what's he supposed to do about it? he can handle it fine when hiro is sassing or moping or being difficult for the sake of being difficult, but this is something entirely different.

being kidnapped to space sucks, but hiro was so frequently and thoroughly bored at home: tadashi can't imagine that it would shatter him like this. it has to be something else. ]

I can't get off this ship earlier?

[ spoiler: he wants to see you. now. ]

Believe me, I don't like it either. It was one thing when I got here, but... [No one was waiting for me then.] I just hung out with Tim for a couple of days. We can keep talking here as long as we want to.

[ tadashi takes a breath, finally easing himself back down into a seat. his fingers flex on the communicator, as if now he's having to struggle to figure out where he's supposed to go from here. ]

How long have you been here?

[ ... maybe that's it. maybe he's just been alone for a long time. ]

Little more than a month. I... I've been keeping busy.

[He's visibly grasping for what to say, running his hand up into his hair and shaking his head.]

The people are pretty nice, my crew is really great.

[Saying it while Steffa's still right there, he doesn't care that she can hear him right now.]

[ tadashi's expression goes quietly blank. he's searching, trying to divine what he can from what he knows.

no. there's simply not enough.

despite it, his voice is gentle, not demanding. ]

... [crap. tadashi that's not fair.]

It's nothing that has to be said right now. I want to talk in person.

[He's being... shockingly mature about this. He's grown up very quickly since the last time he saw you, Tadashi.]

[ he can't argue with that. or, well: he could, but he won't, because there's a seriousness in hiro's expression that has tadashi a little spooked. ]

Alright. That's - alright. We'll talk about it then.

[ he sucks a breath in through his teeth, before he shakes his head and continues on. ]

But if you're here, what about - is Callaghan okay? I was trying to get to him --

[ and something about that has him darkly uncomfortable, but he's brushing that off for now. ]

[Hiro's face does... something weird. It flickers, there's a trace of anger, of resentment, of acceptance, of relief. The entire spectrum of what Callaghan has put him through, from his "death" to his daughter.]

Callaghan is fine.

[No "professor" from Hiro, that's for sure.]

[ tadashi isn't blind. he sees the cascade of emotions there, but can't begin to understand how to parse them, to determine what they could possibly mean. so, instead, he focuses on what he does understand, or at least what he's sure he does: ]

I got to him in time.

[ the relief is utterly, utterly tangible. ]

Alright, then. That's - good. [ he's glad that there's at least one thing that doesn't feel like a total disaster. ] So a month, huh?

[That relief does nothing but make Hiro physically ill. There's always going to be a part of him that hates Callaghan for what he did, regardless of his reasons. And maybe it would have been better if he'd been sympathetic, but to blame Tadashi... To not even be sorry...

[That, Hiro can never forgive.

His mind seems to wander in that little last leg of dialogue from Tadashi, his gaze slipping down. After a moment, he closes his eyes, swallows, and nods.]

Yeah. Made a few friends so far, have a lot of projects going. Conditions on these ships aren't the greatest, but I'm gonna change that.

[ he doesn't know where to go from here.

he very clearly remembers where their conversation had been, before it had been interrupted by the fire, but trying to pick that up now seemed stupid and disingenuous. wasn't like there was an SFIT to attend here, anyway.

there's something wrong, highlighted by the way hiro closes his eyes, and tadashi ignores the cold clench of dread in his stomach. ]

Sure, I see how it is. Take on a bunch of projects, get in totally over your head, call me up to bail you out...

[ why does his voice sound so strained in his own ears? ]

I'm gonna go check the rest of this place out, I think. I'll call you again when I'm done?

[ to him, it's been minutes since he's seen hiro. he's worried about him in a general sense, sure, but he's not too concerned about his safety specifically. besides, he'll be able to do the most good if he really understands what's going on around him. ]

[Hiro gives the least genuine smile and shrug Tadashi's probably ever seen.]

Well, you know me.

[But then he says he's leaving, and Hiro can feel his heart stop. He waits more than couple of seconds before he nods, shallow, looking him over on the video screen like he's trying to memorize him. Just in case it happens again.]

Yeah. I'll be waiting.

[And probably doing nothing else.]

[ tadashi is going to spend the next five days wrapped in uncomfortable paranoia. he frowns thoughtfully at hiro. ]

I want all you've got on your two biggest projects when I call you back. Have them ready?

[This nod is a lot more firm.]

Got it. I'll talk to you soon. [There's a "right?" there, a plea for a promise, but he doesn't say it out loud.]

[ hiro's been here a month. it's been a full month, in space, alone for the first time in his life - that has to be the reason for this. of course hiro's reacting strangely. it wouldn't make sense for it to be any other way, would it?

(and still, even with those pieces, the picture still isn't complete. there's some angle he isn't seeing, something he's not understanding, but what choice does he have right now? he has to work with what he has.) ]

Yeah. Hiro - look at me.

[He glances down, and his shoulders slump a little, but he looks at the screen, jaw tight and set. Tadashi has his full attention.]

[He leans into that squeeze just a bit, and then looks over at her, smiling the best can manage at the moment.]
