I must say the good folk of this stop are very kind - they have allowed my brother and I use of the mines and forges here in exchange for some trading. My brother and I are going to be working on some proper swords - if anyone else is inclined to a bladed weapon, we are happy to make you one as well.

Grandfather, Fingon, you needn't ask, but your help in the forges would be invaluable - Maedhros and I manage, of course, but neither of us are... what we were. And we have neither Father, nor Curvo, nor Tylepe here to point out everything we are doing wrong!

There's always Sokka - I know he'd be thrilled to help you all make swords. I'm sure Kirk would help as well!

What else do you make, besides swords?

Mm, well at the moment, we are working mostly on weapons, but Maedhros and Fingon were thinking about armor, too, although Fingon and I feel that shields might be the more useful.

But I am making arrowheads for Sorey, and then I will get to work on Tyrion's comission, I think.

[ He looks a little sad ] Tis a skill I never thought to use, when I was younger, I could not wait to get out of the forge! But I have needed it far too often, over the years.

Mmm. [ Maglor smiles at her wryly ]

When Father brought me to the forges for the first time, only the jewelry could hold my attention for long. But it was always music that drew me.

You have the right of it! Although there was music in the forge too, and I was just as distracted there !

Father nearly tore his hair out with frustration.

[ Maglor remembers fondly ]

Partly, of course, because he wished desperately for a son to share in his pursuits, but mostly because being distracted in the forge of all places, was terribly dangerous. I think I was the one to be pronounced unteachable the fastest!

Father was a very exacting taskmaster.

[ Maglor says wryly ]

Unteachable by his standards I may have been, but it still meant I left the forges knowing as much as any first year apprentice.

Would you mind if I watched you for a little bit? I've never seen a real forge in action.

Of course not. [ Maglor smiles at her ] Although I warn you most of this is quite boring!

[Seriously. When you come from a world where most things are made instantly in a replicator, this is a novelty.]

[Beverly sits where directed and rests her elbows on her knees and her head in her hands as she watches him get to work with great interest, listening to his explanations when offered and asking some of her own questions here and there. But mostly, she just watches. It's an amazing process to see a hunk of unformed metal turning into a sword... she wonders vaguely if this is how the Klingons still do it. She'll have to ask Worf - if she ever gets the chance to, that is.]

[ Well the main difference is that Klingon's probably don't sing as they work! But Maglor does, keeping the beat for his brother and his cousin, all three of them working smoothly together, Fingon's voice eventually rising up to twine with his cousin's, although Maedhros only watches them fondly and does not join in.

In this way time passes swiftly, from the unformed mass a shape forms, elegant and graceful and undoubtedly deadly. ]
