[Kitty's morning on the Tourist did not go as planned. It's another hour or so before she makes this announcement. She doesn't even know what happened to the minutes in between. But she's all business when she looks into the communicator. No hiding behind text.]

Winn Schott is in a coma. [Blunt. Direct. Maybe she should have called a few people individually first like Kara, but she wasn't going to make it through this if she did that.] He always has projects going, so they're going to be late. If something is important let me know and I'll see if it's something I can work on in his place.

I already fed his slug today, but someone on the Tourist should take care of that until lazy wakes up. [The mild insult to cover feelings is so classic Kitty, circa home it may not even fit with what people of the fleet know of her. That Kitty had walls around her walls, but those are gone now.]

He's always checking on ship systems on the Twin Roses since we managed to merge and still not get an engineer out of the deal, so if anyone else can help us out with that in the meantime let me know. I'll also be working on the new dance studio later today if anyone wants to help. [Because this mission is almost complete and she needs another one so she can hold it together. Can't fall apart if she's sanding down floors.]

I'm so sorry, Kitty.

[She knows how it is to have a loved one in a deep sleep. Her heart goes out to Kitty.]

Truly. Is there anything I can do? I could bring you something?

Jeyne. Hey. [She tries a smile for the girl, and it twists into something too sad for that and she ducks her head.] I didn't mean to make a big deal out of it. I just know a lot of people count on Winn. [Like she does.]

It is though. [She says it gently. The memory of Robb in that deep sleep never far from her mind. She knew exactly how frightening it could be.] Don't take too much on yourself, Kitty.

I like being busy. [Honestly, when Winn's around she doesn't mind the slow pace because it means she can work with him more or just be with him. But in this moment she'd love to drown herself in work. Exhaust herself so she can sleep at night and keep her mind occupied so she can't worry. It's the only coping mechanism she ever really had or needed at home. There was always something. A dozen somethings. You couldn't count on anything but yourself. You had to find your next meal and any sort of supplies and the battles were endless even as a teacher for the next generation of mutants it never paused much.] ...It's easier.

I understand. [It was how Jeyne managed Robb's sleep as well. It didn't alleviate her fears for Kitty or the sympathy that she felt. It was painful to see your lover, asleep and not waking, knowing there was nothing to be done to wake them.]

Should you like some company?

[Such a tricky balance with company. Part of her does. Part of her wants to hide away. She's not sure which side should win.] Want to help work on the dance studio? [She doesn't care so much if Jeyne is working. She'd just like there to be something to be doing other than just talking about it. She's not sure how much of that she can do.]

Of course. You will have to help guide me in the work, but I should be glad to help.

I can do that. At the very least I can make it up as I go. That's gotten me pretty far already. It's on the Iskaulit. Pretty easy to see.

[She quickly changed into a slightly shorter skirt (ankles can be seen!) It didn't take very long to find Kitty.]

I don't think I have ever seen a "dance studio". What is it for?

[SCANDAL!]

This may shock you, but it's for dancing. [She means it in a good natured way even if she's not as quick with the smiles today.]

[Jeyne covers her face for a moment, trying not to laugh.]

It is. Very shocking.

What sort of dancing? I doubt it is similar to my world.

[She manages a soft smile for a moment even under the circumstances of Winn's coma.] Oh, all sorts or at least that's what we'll do here. But I'm thinking mostly of ballet. I don't know that anyone else will actually want to learn it, but it's what I trained most in when I was younger.

It sounds beautiful. [The name did at least. She had never heard of the dance, but she had come to expect that. She wanted to learn when the time came. She hadn't danced in so long.] What would you like me to do to help?

It is. Or it can be. I've seen it done badly too. It's hard on the feet, but it's powerful and graceful.

[Nodding.] Please. Want to help paint?

I should like to see it someday. Perhaps to learn a little as well?

[Anything new, she wanted to try it.]

Of course.

[She glanced around for the supplies.]

Well, teaching is the goal, so I would be up for that if you want to take a class. It might be a small class. Possibly a private lesson.

That might be best. I should hate my lack of grace to be seen.

Everyone stumbles when they start. Do you dance at home?

I did, but not for a long while.

[Not even at her wedding.]

I was taught as a girl.

Is that common there? Dance lessons as children? [She knows a lot about that world and yet she's still not always sure what to make of it.]

It is if you wish to make a good marriage.

My mother intended for me to marry well and into a great house, so I was instructed how to be a proper lady. It included dancing.

What other skills are proper ladies expected to learn? [Nice and distracting. And she's curious. Both their worlds could be so harsh, but Jeyne's has so much more social structure left to it. Maybe it's the similarity in seeing the rise and fall of civilizations.]

We are instructed to learn to run a household, embroidery, a bit of music. My mother was insistent on my learning nursing, as well as herbs. Though that is uncommon for ladies of breeding.

My mother wanted me to be appealing for a lord, so I was educated as other ladies of higher standing were.

I think I had lived in your world someone would have had a very hard time keeping me still enough for embroidery. I guess I can't really imagine what I'd be if I'd lived in a world so different. Although I have seen another version of it. [Another version of herself back in the prison.]

Did you like any of it?

There were other things to do beyond embroidery. My brother took me often to play in the sea and we explored the hills around our castle. It was beautiful there once. [Before her mother spoiled it all.] I enjoyed learning to nurse and all I could about plants.

There is something beautiful in growing life with your own hands.
