[Kitty's morning on the Tourist did not go as planned. It's another hour or so before she makes this announcement. She doesn't even know what happened to the minutes in between. But she's all business when she looks into the communicator. No hiding behind text.]

Winn Schott is in a coma. [Blunt. Direct. Maybe she should have called a few people individually first like Kara, but she wasn't going to make it through this if she did that.] He always has projects going, so they're going to be late. If something is important let me know and I'll see if it's something I can work on in his place.

I already fed his slug today, but someone on the Tourist should take care of that until lazy wakes up. [The mild insult to cover feelings is so classic Kitty, circa home it may not even fit with what people of the fleet know of her. That Kitty had walls around her walls, but those are gone now.]

He's always checking on ship systems on the Twin Roses since we managed to merge and still not get an engineer out of the deal, so if anyone else can help us out with that in the meantime let me know. I'll also be working on the new dance studio later today if anyone wants to help. [Because this mission is almost complete and she needs another one so she can hold it together. Can't fall apart if she's sanding down floors.]

[She doesn't move away from the hand, letting it rest on her shoulder. And she glances up to smile very faintly.]

It's not necessary to say anything. That life is long past. [It's not a secret either, though she could regret bringing the conversation down, especially when she's here to keep Kitty company. Makie fails at the cheerful support thing.

So she carries on, just to add a hopefully more uplifting ending--] My mother was a very strong woman, and I'll always be proud of her for her choices.

[At least now Kitty isn't the only one who fails at cheerful support. That's it's own kind of cheerful support! Not being alone!]

I'm glad, and of yours too I hope. [At least she hopes Makie hasn't done anything she's ashamed of. It makes self doubt all too easy when you have. Kitty should know.]

[therewerefifty]

[There's a momentary stillness, and then Makie gives a nod so tiny it's noncommittal, and she turns deliberately to look at the room.]

We should... you should probably show me what we need to do here.

[Point of fact, Makie's never been proud of anything she's done. Completely the opposite.]

[Nodding, realizing that was likely more than a signal that she was ready to change the subject.] Right. Gotta get this place in shape. [So she can have some kind of "mission" to distract her from Winn's coma. Though now her thoughts are sure to drift back to Makie's past.]

Thank you for coming here. Doing this for me. [The distraction more than the work. But also the opening up under any circumstances.] I didn't have any control over where I got shuffled and I like the Tourist a lot. Obviously Winn is there, but you and the rest of the crew are what keep me with our ship. [Winn may be the person she's most obvious about loving, but he's far from the only one.]

...I appreciate that. [She does. She's not used to such statements and probably never will be, but they're reassuring. And to be honest, she's not sure what she'd do if Kitty left the ship with Vash as the captain. Probably leave herself.]

I doubt anyone begrudges the time the two of you spend together. Is he satisfied on the Tourist? [Unspoken-- maybe he could always come to the Twin Roses.]

He loves it. I think it's probably the best home he's ever had. [Which is why neither of them ever asks the other to move. Because they know how much the ships mean to them and that if they asked they'd say yes. And neither of them wants to take away the other person's home and so they share.]

I see... [A sentiment she's heard from several people, now. She glances up at Kitty now, genuinely curious.]

He's not from the same world as you, is he...?

No. And his world is a fine enough place. Just hasn't had the best time with family. [She doesn't want to reveal too much here. That may have already been more than Winn would be comfortable with.]

We hope to go there together someday. Somehow. [She knows how impossible that sounds.]

...it might be possible.

I know that sounds odd, but there are a few of us here that should... be able to travel between worlds, once we leave the Fleet.

[Look she's trying to be helpful.]

Do you really think that sounds odd to me? I'm a mutant and this is my second abduction. [There's a pause after she smiles at her.] You're not one of those people, are you? The traveling between worlds sort?

[She smiles a little sheepishly.] Not me, personally. Not yet. But the others here that used to be from Adstringendum should be able to.

I wasn't aware of others who could, but given the circumstances, I suppose that shouldn't have been a surprise to me.

[passingthrough]

Not yet, huh? [She looks amused.] Was it something granted to people in Adstringendum?

[therewerefifty]

I haven't quite made it to the point that Sam talks about, but... yes. When all was said and done, our old communicators are meant to allow us to travel back and forth between our world and Adstringendum-- and the world of anyone who has one.

I'm not sure of the full details. I'm sure Sam could tell you more.

So, Sam can travel through worlds now except not now because of the Atroma? He has not mentioned that.

[...well, Sam doesn't just tell people such things. On the other hand, maybe she's wrong, and Makie looks unsure.]

That's how events unfolded there, I'm told. But perhaps he doesn't have the communicator here.

[They've only covered so much territory. There was a lot of "I knew a version of you" to get through and then finding him during a glitch.] I'll be sure to ask when I see him next. [For this she might even seek him out.] It's something to think about at least.

I hope he can provide you with information that's hopeful.

Me too. Thanks, Makie. [And with that she falls quiet for awhile, working on the dance studio and showing others what to do to help as they filter in. It's not the same as having Winn wake up, but having the support helps a lot. Also, this is a fade to black situation!]
