[When he gets the request for permission, Stefan almost thinks she's kidding. No one's done that before. Heck, he doesn't even think he's asked before he beams himself onto the Huntress . . . ]

Oh, um, sure. [He can't quite hide his surprise. Is she another vampire?] Thanks for asking, but I promise. You don't usually have to ask.

[We 18th century Japanese ladies take our manners very seriously!!]

I appreciate that, sir. But I thought at least the first visit I should be courteous. Thank you.

No, I should be thanking you for the courtesy. [He feels like he should bow or something. Just in case she is a vampire, he adds:] Come on in. I'm sure Misty's been expecting you.

Thank you. [Being so deathly pale probably doesn't help her possibly-a-vampire case, but she steps on in delicately, giving him a polite bow of greeting.]

I am Otono-Tachibana Makie. [Sure, she probably gave her name when asking permission, but now she's just going through polite ritual. It's okay, she thaws after a while.] It's a pleasure to meet you, Captain Stefan. How has Misty been?

Likewise, Ms. Makie. [He returns that bow, with far more grace and ease than one might expect. Might as well complete that ritual with her, right?] Misty's been settling in well. Better than I expected, honestly.

[His cheeks flush a little at the thought - he was worried about how she'd co-mingle with his crew, but he's been fretting over absolutely nothing.]

[Wow do you know how many men she knows that actually return her courtesy on the same level. Instant points for you, Stefan, A+++

However, that comment is concerning--] Did you expect there to be trouble?

[There's no accusation. Just concern.]

[He can understand that concern, so he respectfully goes for the truth – ]

A little. Not in the sense of fighting or anything, but there's always a worry when you get a new crewmate. How're they going to settle in? What sorts of things do they prefer doing? What can I do to make their time here easier? That sort of thing.

Ah. [That's quite reassuring, actually.] You are a captain who is a strong believer in hospitality also. It's a good combination.

Thank you. [His expression softens,] None of us chose to be here, but we can choose how we treat each other. That's... really all it is.

It's a good way to live. I only wish more people thought the same, though... it seems many on the Fleet are very kind.

Well, we're all stuck in close, tight quarters. Even your most depraved idiot wouldn't try and anger the guy he has to see day in, day out.

[... he hopes.]

In my experience, that sort of antagonism is displayed less by the depraved and more by the very stupid.

That aside, I do like to believe most of us are genuinely nice. It makes for a refreshing change.

Indeed. [There's a pause as he glances towards the kitchen,] I don't want to keep you or Misty waiting, but would you like some tea? We have black, green - not the dispenser kind, and some herbal.

[Oh, green tea. It's been a while. Makie smiles.]

I would enjoy some tea, yes. Please. I can let Misty know I'll be in the kitchen.

Of course. [He returns that smile, leading the way. The ships are identically similar, so it's not really for any real purpose except - well, hospitality.] You could take some to her too, probably.

[Ironically they aren't too similar now, that's for sure. Not since the weird fusion that took place-- but that doesn't mean she's not well familiar with the turns Stefan takes.]

I think she'd like that.

Misty joined this ship for you, did she not? You've been... good friends for a long time.

Ever since she arrived. [He tilts his head thoughtfully.] I don't know, it was like... we clicked almost immediately, and things kind of happened from there.

I'm glad to hear it. [She likes Misty having friends.] I must confess I was taken a little by surprise when she opted to leave, but that was only because I'd yet to meet you. Our paths hadn't crossed. Though likely, the fault for that is mine.

[She's a shut-in.]

It's my fault too. I don't stop to think about it much, but I've gotten so busy since I arrived, with the ship and the interfaith center and then with whatever's happening on the planet...

[ He laughs, nervously shuffling into the kitchen and motioning for her to take a seat on one of the barstools. ]

It's not just you. I swear, I've wanted to meet you for a while.

[She starts at that. Why would you...?]

Me...? I'm afraid I would make for poor company.

I used to believe the same about myself. [Then he had created the Interfaith Center, and taken over as captain, forcing himself straight into the limelight.] But you're good with a shamisen, and you bring a kind of comfort to those you talk to.

Those aren't talents you should overlook.

[There's a flicker of honest and dark amusement at the word comfort-- its connotations to Makie are far different. It's gone again, quashed quickly in light of Stefan's genuine intent.]

I appreciate that you would think as much. It seems Misty has spoken highly of me.

Of course she has. Misty loves with her whole heart, and if anyone's managed to reach that... they're pretty special.

[ As they head into the kitchen, Stefan gets the electric kettle ready and reaches for the loose tea he's kept from various planets. None of this dispenser nonsense for a new friend. ]
