You're speaking to the First Mate on the Caprine now, I guess. If any other first mates want to give me advice on my duties, that sounds grand.

[ A wink, yeah, he's already figured out about how much a first mate does (or does not) do. Mostly he figured McCoy might not mind what help he could give. ]

And for everyone new or new-ish on the Caprine, which might even include me, welcome.

Maybe we can have a party when we leave this system. It can double as a 'thank Morrígan no one expects us to be fish anymore' party.

If anyone wants to fetch alcohol from this planet while you're out, we can probably find a way to drink it.

[ Kai's mostly wandering through the Caprine now, trying to at least inventory what they already have. What previous crew members might have left behind and still hasn't been claimed. He knows McCoy is going to be on the planet, helping. It's just that Kai would be useless on two counts if he'd gone with, and he does feel a bit bad about it. ]

[ Kai wonders for a second if that means there could be people from his own world to show up. He wonders if he wants that. (Assuming that none of the people who show up are Tannic or his brothers, since he knows he doesn't want that.)

But having Ryder, Dempsey, or Cari here would complicate things. It might be nice. ]

I don't usually make myself unavailable so anytime that anyone wants to talk over coffee or something, I'm around. And really, I think even the captain probably needs to get to know me, I was literally another person back when we met.

Not sure but the easy answer is I have the memories of eight other lifetimes because of a symbiont I'm joined with.

That answer's not very easy, because I'm struggling to understand it.

What's it change for you here?

Not very much, admittedly. I just know a couple people here from my previous hosts.

How long have you lived, with...all your hosts?

Pretty long. Around three-hundred and fifty years? Dax was born in 2018.

Oh, so not that long.

[ Compared to an elfin lifespan, three hundred and fifty years doesn't seem like that much. ]

I mean, it's longer than me, but it's not unfathomable.

[ Kai will live that long, if he doesn't get killed earlier. ]

I suppose? Dax isn't even one of the oldest. Odan is older, that was was joined maybe eight times before Dax ever was. We don't really know how old a symbiont can live to be, yet.

So symbiont is sounding an awful lot like parasite. What's the difference?

[She has an immediate flash of Audrid and her husband and shakes her head.]

We choose to join with the symbionts, we have more enriched lives with them and them with us. Parasites need hosts to live, they force themselves onto hosts without giving anything in return.

Unless you can't objectively judge what you're getting in return, once you've been influenced.

[ It sounds pretty suspicious. ]

No, I can still remember what I was like before being joined. And I didn't lose who I am like I was afraid of. I know a lot though, I remember being a pilot, an engineer, a diplomat- I can't be too upset by it. All these lives that would have been forgotten otherwise. And now some part of Ezri Tigan will live on after I'm gone.

It's all pretty weird though, at least it seems that way. I can't imagine having to have someone else's experiences, in addition to my own.

[She's quiet for a moment but finally nods.]

It is weird. Especially here, with people I knew- Dax knew, over a century ago. And at home, with people who watched Jadzia die, working with her husband.

I don't think I'd give it up though. It's hard to explain but they're all there. If I'm not feeling confident, I have Curzon to draw on. Or if I'm torn on the right thing to do, I have Lela or Jadzia or Audrid.

I have a hard enough time just being me, most of the time.

[ A smile. ]

When you're drawing on them, though, are you still in control?

I am but sometimes it's easy to get lost in them. I can kind of bring one to the surface, mostly, if I need their experiences. I've only done it once.
