[The message gets sent out fairly late at night, once she's absolutely sure. She's known about Kaito for a few weeks, but she wasn't inclined to notify everyone when it was just him departing. Now, though... In some ways, it cuts deeper when she realizes who else has left.]

if anyone was friends or whatever with aoko nakamori or kaito kuroba, they both left the fleet at some point. guess it makes sense they'd both take off within a few weeks of each other, they were kind of a package deal.

anyways, that's all i really had to say. sorry for the bad news.

[as usual, her lips quirk up into a smile upon hearing him say that, though she hides it by taking another spoonful of ice cream.

it does make her curious, though. she realizes that she doesn't know much about his home life. aliens and portals, sure, but not much that's more personal than that.]

Did you have any siblings back home, Winn?

[ oh..probably not where they should be going when he's trying to cheer her up, but okay. he's letting her call the shots today (like he doesn't always). ]

Only child. I mean, I had foster siblings, but they never really liked me and we didn't keep in touch, so I'm not counting them.

Oh.

[She doesn't seem upset by the news, necessarily, but she does look sympathetic.]

Other kids your parents took in, or was it the other way around?

Other way around. Dad went to jail, mom bailed, the country song writes itself.

[ he shrugs, trying to keep it light with a bit of humor. ]

[She pauses for a moment, frowning, her expression growing more concerned.]

Sorry, I didn't realize... We can talk about something else.

[ he smiles and shakes his head ]

It's fine, I'm over it. [ kinda. some of the time. ] Do you wanna...talk about your friends? [ well you know, he has to ask. ]

[She doesn't really believe that, but she won't push it. Not right now, at least. She gives a shrug, and a small smile in return.]

Not really sure what there is to say.

[ she's too smart to believe his bullshit. ]

[A sigh, putting the spoon down for a moment to cup her cheek in a hand as she looks down at the table.]

We didn't meet here, we met in... the last place I was in. I guess I just worry they got sent back there.

[ oh. you know what, he's putting his hand on your shoulder because that is heavy. ]

I wish I could tell you for sure they didn't. [ but he can't. like he can't say for sure that sascha didn't go back home, or that pinkie and margaery did. ]

[She blinks up at him when she feels his hand on her shoulder, surprised, and then lets out a breath. She doesn't pull away, though.]

...Yeah. I wish I knew for sure, too. It really sucked there.

They got out once. If they are back - there's still hope they'll get out again. How long have you known them?

[ he wonders if cisco can check, if his vibes would even be viable, reliable, in this setting. but no, cisco hates his powers, he told winn about them in confidence, he can't abuse that trust. ]

Yeah, it's just - what might happen in the interim that worries me. There's not really anything I can do about that, I guess, but...

[She has to pause for a moment to think about that, though.]

I think I was there for... three or four months? Then both of them got here around five or six months months ago. So, that long altogether.

[ lightly squeezing her arm. that feeling of helplessness is the worst an he's yet to find anything to make it better. ]

I'm really sorry, Opal. [ they can share in their mutual helplessness? ]

It's... I mean, it's not okay, but - you know. It happens.

[She takes another breath, shaking her head as if to clear it.]

It means a lot that you came, either way.

Of course. [ he nods, he knows how it feels, it's how he felt when she came for him. ] Where else would I be.

[ his little sister needs him, there's nowhere in the multiverse that's more important than right her now. ]

You say that like it's not a big deal, but... It is for me. So, thanks.

You know you're always welcome. That's what family should be for.

[ his failed miserably at it and he's gotten the feeling that hers wasn't brilliant at it either, but it doesn't mean they can't do better. ]

Yeah. Still kind of... trying to figure out how that works, I guess.

[A pause, before she glances at him.]

I guess it's probably the same for you, huh?

[ he nods ]

We work it out together.

[She hesitates for a moment. It helps, hearing that, and yet...]

What if you leave, too?

[Her voice is low, and she chews at her bottom lip. Really, the fact that she's voicing this worry at all is a testament to how much she trusts him.]

[ that's a hard one. he runs his fingers through his hair ]

I can't tell you that I won't. But, I can tell you that if any part of me remains aware of this fleet I'll find my way back and without this augment, it'll be a lot easier to break this place. If we're going worst case scenario, though...there are a lot of good people here, people who would be happy to help you. And you'll always have the memory of me. When I feel lost, I think of the advice Margaery's given me over this year. When I feel sad, I think of Pinkie Pie's optimism. When I feel lonely I think of Sascha's invasions of personal space. [ he laughs lightly, he used to kinda hate it. he would give so much to be able to hug sascha again, now. ] Just because they're gone from the fleet doesn't mean they're gone from my life. The memories we create here are going to keep helping us through.

[She doesn't give a vocal agreement or disagreement, just nods mildly with a thoughtful expression. She suspects she'll know his answer, but:]

Do you ever wonder if it's a bad idea to get close to people?

[ he shakes his head. ]

Been there, done that, it's not all it's cracked up to be. You don't have these sharp pains when you lose people, sure, but instead you're just in constant lonely misery. Everyone I met here has made me a better person and even if I can't take my friends back with me - that's gonna stay with me forever.

[She pauses for a few moments, then reaches forward to take another spoonful of ice cream.]

How much did I tell you about the place I was in before this? I'm leading to something, promise.
