[ a message materializes on the network around midday: ]

Peggy Carter's got a veritable guy-pile of suitors: Edwin Jarvis, Max Rockatansky, Jason Wilkes, Jack Thompson, Howard Stark, Stefan Salvatore, Steve Rogers, Sam Winchester, James Barnes, Clint Barton, Daniel Sousa, and counting! How many more can you name?

[ and not long after (in a state of utter pique and dismay), that same network registers a rather heartfelt reaction -- but this time with accompanying wide-eyed video. ] Jack -- Jack Thompson? Un-bloody-likely. The only thing he's ever got his eyes on is the next greasy rung on the ladder. [ peggy scoffs, disgusted. ] As pranks go, this one's been truly shambolic. The first of April was days ago.

[ in a few hours, she'll enjoy her meltdown all over again when she finds a box of sponsor gifts in the cargo bay filled with stickers, each with a different so-called suitor's name scribbled into the blank space. all of them are filled in except for an ominous pile with an attached note: in case there's so many you start to forget their names. blanks included for any others that we might have missed. ]

That is very generous.

Something is definitely up with things. Which is probably the vaguest way I could say these notes are getting more suspicious.

Our fans are making themselves known -- and in unpleasant ways.

[ oh, well. chin up. ]

You think it's the fans? [It's not that it doesn't line up. Her thoughts just go straight to the Atroma every time. And, well, if it is the fans then it's the Atroma facilitating it, but...] Interesting twist.

If it's true that we have any then -- yes, it's a real possibly. Given the gift-boxes that have arrived in conjunction.

Oh, did you got something with it too?

I did, yes.

[ although she rather intentionally does not volunteer the 'what' of it. ]

[She can live with a lack of detail.] And it's related to your long list of not-so-accurate suitors?

Indelibly so. [ a moody pause. ] And utterly useless, besides. I'm not one for wastage but I can't see much use in the box except for jettisoning it out an airlock.

Useless is their favorite flavor of drop off. I guess you're not going to tell me what it is? [She can live without knowing, but she's still curious.]

Describing what came in the box would only cause further embarrassment to the names on that list, I think. For their sake, it's better left unsaid.

Fair enough.

How's Steve taking it?

[ she bites down on a retort or three. what has steve's reaction got to do with it?; not all men are jealous creatures; who are you to ask so personal a question? -- but deep down, peggy knows those are the motives she reads into kitty's words because of crueler questions asked by colder people. it's been well over a year, now, and she still can't strip the '40s away from every conversation.

so there's a marked tension in her expression before she finally answers: ] He knows better than to make a fuss out of it.

[She never would have imagined jealous. Concerned for Peggy? Angry at the Atroma? That feels more Steve to her. Not that she knows him well enough to say for certain. She admires him so much that she finds it almost hard to be around him sometimes. Worried she'll disappoint him if he knows her too well and that sounds a little crushing.]

Not a lot of recourse for something like this I guess. It's nicer when the one who does the thing is around to get punched.

[ truth be told, even the notion that someone should ask about his concern for her sticks in her craw -- but then again, it's always been an odd association. and an even odder relationship. ]

One must settle for grinning and bearing it. [ make do and mend. forever make do and mend. ]

[They do approach things rather differently in that area. Kitty has trouble not talking about Winn. He comes up enough that she worries it might annoy people. Whereas she's not sure she's even technically supposed to be aware there is a connection between Steve and Peggy it's so hush, hush. There's probably an average relationship somewhere in the middle there.]

But just until there is someone to punch for it.

I'm not holding my breath.

Probably a good call on that one. I never got a chance in the last place. I was just suddenly here. [Or not since apparently Chekov knew a version of her who stayed a few additional months in the prison after she remembers leaving.]
