Peggy Carter's got a veritable guy-pile of suitors: Edwin Jarvis, Max Rockatansky, Jason Wilkes, Jack Thompson, Howard Stark, Stefan Salvatore, Steve Rogers, Sam Winchester, James Barnes, Clint Barton, Daniel Sousa, and counting! How many more can you name?

[ and not long after (in a state of utter pique and dismay), that same network registers a rather heartfelt reaction -- but this time with accompanying wide-eyed video. ] Jack -- Jack Thompson? Un-bloody-likely. The only thing he's ever got his eyes on is the next greasy rung on the ladder. [ peggy scoffs, disgusted. ] As pranks go, this one's been truly shambolic. The first of April was days ago.

[ in a few hours, she'll enjoy her meltdown all over again when she finds a box of sponsor gifts in the cargo bay filled with stickers, each with a different so-called suitor's name scribbled into the blank space. all of them are filled in except for an ominous pile with an attached note: in case there's so many you start to forget their names. blanks included for any others that we might have missed. ]

[Stefan shakes his head, already raising his eyebrows at the absurdity of it all. As far as rumors went, this was one of the more baffling ones.]

I'm afraid to ask what they mean by "counting." You have one conversation, and it becomes true love?

[ winn has decided his best course of action with these rumors is a healthy dose of denial. therefore - what rumors and sponsor drops? he sees no rumors and sponsor drops! you know, gossip is very rude! ]

The first is done [ and so his anniversary has come and gone ], so are we on for tonight? Same hour good with you? I whipped up an exercise I think you'll enjoy. [ he's not providing distractions, what are you talking about, that would imply there's something to distract from and there is clearly not! ]

[ give her a moment to recover from her laughter, winn, because 'so are we on for tonight?' is not going to help dispel any rumours.

after a deep breath: ] Funny, I didn't see your name on the list.

[It's been a few days. John has figured out the voice function, yay him.]

Ya found out who wrote that yet? If ya did, I can talk to 'em for you. [His tone makes it clear that there won't be much talking involved, aside from maybe yelling.]

Lieutenant Colonel. [ an incline of her head -- almost a greeting. ] Can't say I've any clearer idea of who the perpetrator is -- but your offer is noted.

[ best not to reject friendship outright. not here. ]

[ there are some things in the world - alien attacks, murderous robots and so on - that require steve's bravery and straightforward attitude. However, there are other cases in which he knows it's best to go for a more subtle approach. He has been doing a good job ignoring this new trend of rumors but one with his name on it ( among the rest )? Well. Outright ignoring this won't do but he also knows this isn't entirely a joking matter. Of all the things, they had to go for an insult and one as low as that.

So, in the end, he'll find her in the cargo bay, shake his head at the box and: ]

[ she's sitting (cross-legged) on the floor, the box at her knee. and when steve arrives, she glances up to make certain it's someone she likes well enough to stay sitting on the floor even as they approach. there's a look behind her eyes as though she's been contending with a stress-headache for some time now, but she at least attempts to put on a brave face for him.

after all, of the entire list? his name strikes nearest to the truth. peggy grabs one of the 'hello, my name is STEVE ROGERS' stickers and offers it up to him between two fingers. ]

Here, darling. [ a huff. ] Apparently it's to be a safeguard in case I manage to forget your name. So many of you, it seems. Hard to keep track.

[ she sees the list and for a moment, she is reminded of the marquee in town, the graffiti on it ( nancy the slut wheeler ) and just how it stung. ]

Jerks.

[ she sounds appalled. it's one thing from stupid kids in a stupid little town in Indiana. ]

I thought only bored, stupid kids do these.

For all we know? That's precisely who some of our captors are. [ she manages not to sound too hot under her collar, but there's a vein of disappointment running through every word. ]

These seem to be getting more elaborate by the minute.

[ she is all stiffness and professionalism. the only thing that might sting more than dear friends reacting to this rumour is the thought that vague acquaintances might make the mistake of believing the swill. but once she parses his words, she lets out a held breath of relief. not so, it seems. ]

Our captors continue to show a god-awful sense of humour, yes.
