[ a message materializes on the network around midday: ]

Peggy Carter's got a veritable guy-pile of suitors: Edwin Jarvis, Max Rockatansky, Jason Wilkes, Jack Thompson, Howard Stark, Stefan Salvatore, Steve Rogers, Sam Winchester, James Barnes, Clint Barton, Daniel Sousa, and counting! How many more can you name?

[ and not long after (in a state of utter pique and dismay), that same network registers a rather heartfelt reaction -- but this time with accompanying wide-eyed video. ] Jack -- Jack Thompson? Un-bloody-likely. The only thing he's ever got his eyes on is the next greasy rung on the ladder. [ peggy scoffs, disgusted. ] As pranks go, this one's been truly shambolic. The first of April was days ago.

[ in a few hours, she'll enjoy her meltdown all over again when she finds a box of sponsor gifts in the cargo bay filled with stickers, each with a different so-called suitor's name scribbled into the blank space. all of them are filled in except for an ominous pile with an attached note: in case there's so many you start to forget their names. blanks included for any others that we might have missed. ]

[ she catches the wad of ammo, uncurls one sticker, and raises her eyebrows at steve. ]

Yes, I'm certain -- Stefan, I suppose -- finds it hilarious.

[ at least it looks like STEFAN had once been written on this one. ]

Can't tell, he's not here to see this. You have a -

[ he reaches to take out a sticker from her hair. ]

here.

[ he'll press it to her cheek, instead. ]

[ the smile grows. can't be helped, really -- enduring something like this is so very different when you're not alone. when you've got someone else to shoulder the burden with you. ]

-- Who am I wearing, now?

Can't tell. Seems like an 'a' --- or a 'u' if you look at it this way.

[ he tilts his head to the side. ]

Sousa, then.

[ the rest of'em haven't got a u. ]

Maybe. Seems like.

[ he shakes confetti out of is hair, brushing the pieces to the floor. ]

See, there's a use to these after all.

Conceded. [ ... ] But it'll be your job to sweep up the mess afterward.

[ doesn't stop her from throwing another handful. ]

Deal, but how will we divide the ammo?

[ ...huh! he's already reaching for a stack, quick as that. can't waste time, after all. ]

You get all of yours, I suppose. It's only fair.

You call that fair? it's not even.

[ no, he's taking the jarvis and stark piles too, thank you. ]

Take Jack's, as well. [ grumble. ] What a wanker.

And you're giving him to me?

[ he has to laugh, alright then. ]

You're being altruistic with these.

Look, if you want to trade him for someone else you'd better speak now or hold your tongue.

[ he has to conclude that this is, by far, the weirdest thing they've ever done. ]

I'll keep him. It'll end up the same, anyway.

[ said as he lifts a little pack of stickers and starts ripping it to pieces. ]

[ meanwhile, she divvies out his stacks before taking her own ammunition (as well as the box they came in) and standing up. if the game is afoot, then she wants to take cover. ]

Five minutes to take cover and prepare your weapons, Steve. And then it's war.

Hold on - since when is the box a part of all of this?

[ already suspicious. ]

My box; my advantage.

[ simple, really. ]

This time.

[ fine. ]

I don't like my odds in this.

[ he jumps to his feet, taking his ammunition with him to take cover. ]

I, on the other hand, like your odds very much.

[ they so do work to her advantage. peggy's stride is cool and unrushed as she makes her way behind a shuttle -- max's incidentally. the same one from which he'd attacked her with a nerf gun not long ago. ]

That doesn't surprise me at all. Still, I guess I'll have to surprise you.

[ he disappears behind a stack of boxes, relatively quickly for someone so tall. but then, he made do with less than this. ]

[ -- she could reply. she could say you often do or i like to think i know you too well or anything along such varied, contradictory, flirtatious lines. but instead she crouches behind the shuttle and gets to work.

instead of following the same pattern as earlier, peggy doesn't rip these stickers into confetti. with a bit of hard work and rapt attention, she uses her time to fold a mere handful into throwing stars.

and the box, when flattened and chopped up with the knife she keeps in her boot, makes a passable shield. the straps are attached with intact stickers. thus outfitted, she calls out: ] Five seconds until go-time. Four. Three. Two. One.

[ let's do this. ]

Are you sure you wanna do this, Peggy? I'm not going to hold back.

[ he sounds a bit distracted, busy with something, evidently. Using the sticky ends, he rolls a few stickers into an old fashioned spitball gun. A much easier, cleaner job when one uses stickers, really. ]

I'd be sorely disappointed if you ever did.

[ but that counter is the last word from her for a short while. she knows she needs to get away from this particular piece of cover, since he'd seen her duck behind it. she's got her eye on two crates stacked on top of one another not far from where she's crouched.

it's just a case of making a break for it. deep breath, and run. ]

[ she's quick and she's quiet and steve has spent a few good seconds calculating the routes she could take. he can hear her but before he can decide on a course of action, she's hidden again.

he knows where. now it's just a matter of drawing her out. ]

Are we playing defense now?

[ he wants her to speak. she knows it because she'd taken much the same tactic with max just a day previous, when he'd assaulted her with his damned foam darts. the moment she makes a noise, he'll be on her -- and peggy takes a moment to steel and remind herself that's an outcome she doesn't actually want. not yet.

instead, she fingers the craggy edges of the cargo crates and (in an attempt to do so quietly, yet aware that his hearing is enhanced) begins to climb to higher ground. the 'shield' goes first. ]
