[ a message materializes on the network around midday: ]

Peggy Carter's got a veritable guy-pile of suitors: Edwin Jarvis, Max Rockatansky, Jason Wilkes, Jack Thompson, Howard Stark, Stefan Salvatore, Steve Rogers, Sam Winchester, James Barnes, Clint Barton, Daniel Sousa, and counting! How many more can you name?

[ and not long after (in a state of utter pique and dismay), that same network registers a rather heartfelt reaction -- but this time with accompanying wide-eyed video. ] Jack -- Jack Thompson? Un-bloody-likely. The only thing he's ever got his eyes on is the next greasy rung on the ladder. [ peggy scoffs, disgusted. ] As pranks go, this one's been truly shambolic. The first of April was days ago.

[ in a few hours, she'll enjoy her meltdown all over again when she finds a box of sponsor gifts in the cargo bay filled with stickers, each with a different so-called suitor's name scribbled into the blank space. all of them are filled in except for an ominous pile with an attached note: in case there's so many you start to forget their names. blanks included for any others that we might have missed. ]

[ a groan. ]

Don't give them ideas, it might be what they'd go for next. A whole box of them.

[ and he'd never live this down. the very thought is enough to make color rush to his cheeks. ]

[ -- peggy smiles. predatory, perhaps, but only because it feels good to see someone else on the ropes today. ]

Oh, it wouldn't be so bad. I could keep one on the shelf. Another on the captain's dash.

You know, they'll do it. They'll take your word for it.

[ jesus christ. ]

They'll think it's funny.

Good God, Steve. I'll think it's funny. [ ... ] Perhaps they'll include the shield.

[ this is the worst. ]

Oh so you think it's funny?

Funnier than these, [ she reminds him. and in the process tosses a whole handful of names at his head. SAM, DANIEL, MAX, JACK, and so on. ]

[ hey - ! ]

oh, ouch.

[ dryly. but fine, wow. ]

I'll toss them out before you'll get to them.

She's my ship, Captain Rogers. I'll bar you from the airlock if I must.

I'll find another way.

[ a quick response as his words work on the stickers, ripping them into little pieces as he did with the first. ]

Captain.

[ alright, his eagerness to destroy what remains of the prank garners him a small smile. such care and protection might verge on condescending -- and from someone else, she might have kicked up a fuss (she certainly had with daniel, once upon a time) but things are always always different with steve rogers.

in effect, she values his privacy as much as she values her own. ]

Bit cruel, really, should you get such a delivery and not manage to keep at least one statuette for me.

Who are we kidding.

[ ah, there it is, just there, what he's been working towards. coaxing smiles out of Peggy is usually easier but then again, it's not every day when the Atroma try to mess up people's lives due to what steve suspects is boredom. ]

It'll probably be addressed to you.

[ it's her turn. she grabs a sticker -- HOWARD STARK, this time -- and takes pleasure in tearing it in two. and then in four. ]

I promise each and every one would find a good home.

A home? Peggy -

[ he tosses the shreds of stickers now turned confetti at her general direction. ]

You make it sound like you'll be handin' them out.

[ she gives her head a shake. doesn't much help; there's still makeshift confetti stuck in her curls, clinging to her hair. ]

Like awards -- like the little gold man they give out for films.

The Academy Awards -

[ hold on that's not even the point. ]

That's terrible, you're terrible. It's not funny at all.

Admit it. It's a little funny. [ her turn to toss 'confetti' at him. ] Funnier than this.

Dunno.

[ as he tosses another fistful of wrinkled paper and sticker. ]

This is pretty funny.

[ she catches the wad of ammo, uncurls one sticker, and raises her eyebrows at steve. ]

Yes, I'm certain -- Stefan, I suppose -- finds it hilarious.

[ at least it looks like STEFAN had once been written on this one. ]

Can't tell, he's not here to see this. You have a -

[ he reaches to take out a sticker from her hair. ]

here.

[ he'll press it to her cheek, instead. ]

[ the smile grows. can't be helped, really -- enduring something like this is so very different when you're not alone. when you've got someone else to shoulder the burden with you. ]

-- Who am I wearing, now?

Can't tell. Seems like an 'a' --- or a 'u' if you look at it this way.

[ he tilts his head to the side. ]

Sousa, then.

[ the rest of'em haven't got a u. ]

Maybe. Seems like.

[ he shakes confetti out of is hair, brushing the pieces to the floor. ]

See, there's a use to these after all.

Conceded. [ ... ] But it'll be your job to sweep up the mess afterward.

[ doesn't stop her from throwing another handful. ]

Deal, but how will we divide the ammo?

[ ...huh! he's already reaching for a stack, quick as that. can't waste time, after all. ]
