[ a message materializes on the network around midday: ]

Peggy Carter's got a veritable guy-pile of suitors: Edwin Jarvis, Max Rockatansky, Jason Wilkes, Jack Thompson, Howard Stark, Stefan Salvatore, Steve Rogers, Sam Winchester, James Barnes, Clint Barton, Daniel Sousa, and counting! How many more can you name?

[ and not long after (in a state of utter pique and dismay), that same network registers a rather heartfelt reaction -- but this time with accompanying wide-eyed video. ] Jack -- Jack Thompson? Un-bloody-likely. The only thing he's ever got his eyes on is the next greasy rung on the ladder. [ peggy scoffs, disgusted. ] As pranks go, this one's been truly shambolic. The first of April was days ago.

[ in a few hours, she'll enjoy her meltdown all over again when she finds a box of sponsor gifts in the cargo bay filled with stickers, each with a different so-called suitor's name scribbled into the blank space. all of them are filled in except for an ominous pile with an attached note: in case there's so many you start to forget their names. blanks included for any others that we might have missed. ]

[ he moves the box out of the way and inches closer. ]

I wouldn't have cared then and I definitely don't care now.

[ briefly -- just for a heartbeat -- her expression is drawn and sour. she's often cowered away from explaining to him the utter mess made of captain america's myth in the post-war years. partially because she can't bring herself to say it, and partially because she suspects he already knows.

peggy pushes away a wayward pile of JACK THOMPSON stickers and invites steve so close that their knees touch. ]

Small blessings, hm? At least there's no way to mistake this as anything other than some godawful Atroma bid for more ratings.

That's what it is.

[ he hates that the words found their mark, that they stung her the way they have. ]

It seems to be all over the place.

Indeed. [ it seems it's easier to look him in his eye than to look at the heap of stickers beside them. ] So -- tell me. Was that the worst of yours? That Captain America is, secretly, Canadian?

There was one that said I'm from New Jersey.

[ and he looks outright offended. how dare they even suggest it. ]

I think it must be the worst one.

Oh, you poor and pitiable creature. [ she rolls her eyes. ] How difficult it must be to be you.

[ new jersey! honestly. can't be that bad. ]

You don't tell a New Yorker that he's from Jersey. It can't get any worst than that. It's like they'll tell you you're from -

[ wait, what's the equivalent of Jersey to an English person? ]

Oklahoma.

[ SUCH a straight face: ] I've got nothing against Oklahoma.

Really. So if someone meets you and simply assumes you were born and raised in Tulsa, you'll have no problem with it?

[ he doesn't buy this whatsoever. ]

Come, now. Such a mistake is considerably less believable than someone thinking you might be from New Jersey. Heavens. [ peggy sighs.

and then, after a moment: ] That Sparrow fellow did ask if I was Scottish, however.

There is nothing about me that says Jersey.

[ Peggy, that's awful. never say that. ]

I guess it's something in the attitude.

And there's nothing about me that says Scotland. And yet the mistake is made -- you'll have to resign yourself to a few more of those in your lifetime, I suspect. Not everyone's got as fine an ear for east coast accents as some.

It's not a mistake. They just think it's funny.

[ and it's not. dear god, if bucky ever finds out about this. ]

Nobody would ever suspect me being anything but what I am.

[ Brooklyn, represent. ]

[ the small part her still angry over the rumour wants to reply with must be nice, steve -- but she bites her tongue. it's not his fault that she's been routine misunderstood and underestimated. he'd been one of the few during those years to see her as a person -- not just a 'dame' no matter their conversation in the back of the ssr car. ]

You have whole history books and encyclopedia entries on your side in that particular fight, I imagine. I'm amazed they haven't erected a statue.

[ a groan. ]

Don't give them ideas, it might be what they'd go for next. A whole box of them.

[ and he'd never live this down. the very thought is enough to make color rush to his cheeks. ]

[ -- peggy smiles. predatory, perhaps, but only because it feels good to see someone else on the ropes today. ]

Oh, it wouldn't be so bad. I could keep one on the shelf. Another on the captain's dash.

You know, they'll do it. They'll take your word for it.

[ jesus christ. ]

They'll think it's funny.

Good God, Steve. I'll think it's funny. [ ... ] Perhaps they'll include the shield.

[ this is the worst. ]

Oh so you think it's funny?

Funnier than these, [ she reminds him. and in the process tosses a whole handful of names at his head. SAM, DANIEL, MAX, JACK, and so on. ]

[ hey - ! ]

oh, ouch.

[ dryly. but fine, wow. ]

I'll toss them out before you'll get to them.

She's my ship, Captain Rogers. I'll bar you from the airlock if I must.

I'll find another way.

[ a quick response as his words work on the stickers, ripping them into little pieces as he did with the first. ]

Captain.

[ alright, his eagerness to destroy what remains of the prank garners him a small smile. such care and protection might verge on condescending -- and from someone else, she might have kicked up a fuss (she certainly had with daniel, once upon a time) but things are always always different with steve rogers.

in effect, she values his privacy as much as she values her own. ]

Bit cruel, really, should you get such a delivery and not manage to keep at least one statuette for me.

Who are we kidding.

[ ah, there it is, just there, what he's been working towards. coaxing smiles out of Peggy is usually easier but then again, it's not every day when the Atroma try to mess up people's lives due to what steve suspects is boredom. ]
