[ a message materializes on the network around midday: ]

Peggy Carter's got a veritable guy-pile of suitors: Edwin Jarvis, Max Rockatansky, Jason Wilkes, Jack Thompson, Howard Stark, Stefan Salvatore, Steve Rogers, Sam Winchester, James Barnes, Clint Barton, Daniel Sousa, and counting! How many more can you name?

[ and not long after (in a state of utter pique and dismay), that same network registers a rather heartfelt reaction -- but this time with accompanying wide-eyed video. ] Jack -- Jack Thompson? Un-bloody-likely. The only thing he's ever got his eyes on is the next greasy rung on the ladder. [ peggy scoffs, disgusted. ] As pranks go, this one's been truly shambolic. The first of April was days ago.

[ in a few hours, she'll enjoy her meltdown all over again when she finds a box of sponsor gifts in the cargo bay filled with stickers, each with a different so-called suitor's name scribbled into the blank space. all of them are filled in except for an ominous pile with an attached note: in case there's so many you start to forget their names. blanks included for any others that we might have missed. ]

[ her steven? oh, crumbs. it's been a damn long time since she's been this dumbstruck by a conversational twist. ]

More than. [ suitable. but then that sounds wretched and she clears her throat and -- ] It's not like that.

[ except it's exactly like that, and peggy just doesn't have the words to suggest that, rather than being merely suitable, steve is utterly ideal. ]

He can't even get drunk.

[Meanwhile poor Jack is mostly under the assumption that Steve is her First Mate. Not necessarily her...first mate. Though that possibility has occurred to him.]

[ oh, her suspicion is THROUGH THE ROOF. ]

Who have you been talking to? Him? Did he tell you that?

What me and Steven talk about on our OWN time is none of your minding, missy! General! General Madam!

[Jack is feeling VERY protective of Steve Rogers.]

If he did tell you it, he lied.

[ look, she adores steve. she truly does. but she is not above throwing him to the wolves for a bit of conversational victory. ]

Did not! Steven's a lamb! He'd never twist the truth, upon my black soul!

[LEAVE STEVE ALONE, PEGGY.]

Is that so? [ ahem. ] Next time you and your precious lamb speak, you ought to ask him about the party at New Years.

You got him drunk and had your way with him?! Next you'll be forcing him into marriage!

[ listen closely, dear sparrow. can you hear the sarcasm? ]

I reckon his arm won't be so tough to twist.

[He can, but he can't place exactly what she's being sarcastic about.]

Oi -- he's a solid-enough lad. Mind you be nice to him! Good mate like that is hard to find!

What makes you so certain? You barely know him.

[ -- curt. she's witnessed too many paltry attempts at 'getting' captain america. at describing him, portraying him, mythologizing him. it always rubs her the wrong way when anyone -- anyone -- makes some claim on him. ]

[He's basically the only person who has been unreservedly nice to Jack since he arrived. And the situation with Peggy....tsk tsk.]

Our briefest of greetings was enough to inform me of his plight. Steven plugs on, in spite of all of his many grievances.

Can't even get drunk, him...mumble mumble....

-- And what grievances are these?

You barely give him any shore leave, for one!

[Steve never complained about anything. Jack is interpolating. Exaggerating. Imagining what his life must be like as Peggy's First Mate.]

Haranguing him left and right! No quarter, never!

[He's also projecting. A lot.]

[ she'll play along, perhaps, because this is a bit on the fun side of things. ]

So it falls to you, then, to broker some clemency on his behalf?

Just give the man a break. Let 'im enjoy himself for once, woman!

What sort of 'break' do you propose, then?

[ this will be perfect revenge for the fact that steve has compiled a list of namby-pamby 'sentimental' activities to complete before their anniversary. ]

[Oh excellent. Just do the whole list.]

Next system we reach, let him enjoy the finer things. Food. Drink. Entertainment. He doesn't need to be at your merciless beck and call at all times!

And what do I get in return for a bit of mercy given?

[ oh, please. you didn't think this street was going one-way, did you? ]

[ -- well. there's a strange reluctant charm to the concept. ]

What? No -- no no nonononono. Not from me! From Steven. Steven shall become a more BETTER first mate for you, if you give him a bit of freedom to sow his oats and barley once in a while!

Me, I'm just trying to put things right for the poor soul! He's clearly in right over his head, and far too sober.

Not acceptable. Not in the least. Now, if you were willing to barter a bit of your own elbow grease? Then maybe we could negotiate.
