Captain's Log 09 - Rumor Has It
Who: Jim Kirk + You
Broadcast: Yes
Action: Yes, the Tourist + the Iskaulit
When: Drift Week
[ Video ]
[ Kirk appears on the screen, wearing his customary black t-shirt. He's a simple man at heart, really. If you look behind him, one can see a number of boxes, all seemingly overflowing with similar black shirts. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what's happened. A sponsor drop.
He's twirling some bits of paper in front of him, a look somewhere between bemused and annoyed on his face. ]
So I suppose I should thank someone for all the new shirts that just came in. I assume they are to make up for these that I have heard going around. I have to say, some of these are quite inventive, so props to whomever came up with them.
Let's read my favorites, shall we?
One - Kirk likes to twirl in his captain's chair when no one is looking.
Two - Kirk rips his shirts on purpose.
Three - Kirk and Leonard McCoy are in a romantic relationship together.
Four - Kirk is secretly a zombie.
Five - Kirk is actually a virgin.
There is quite a lot to unpack in those, which I assume come from the "viewers". Two of which have me saying - really? Do you know me at all? But I applaud your imaginations, truly.
[ He pushes away from his position of leaning on his desk - at which point his black shirt rips right across the chest. He looks down and sighs, giving his head that little shake of the exasperated when something has happened one to many times in a day. He looks up at the camera and points with his little stubs of paper. ]
Contrary to belief, that was not on purpose. And whoever dropped these - F for quality.
[ And he turns off the video to go change. Sorry guys, no show today. ]
[ Action ]
[ Over the course of the next week or so, it is highly likely one will run into Kirk on either the Tourist or the Iskaulit in some variable form of undress - bet it with an intact shirt, a ripped shirt, or changing into a new one he carried with him at all times. If you have never seen his tattoos before, now's your chance.
Also, for the Tourist, don't mind the ripped up shirts that are beginning to appear in every trash receptacle, and even forming a modest pile just outside his door in one of the emptied boxes. He really has nowhere else to put them. ]

Re: action;
Wow, no room for your big brother on your adventures in your dreams? I'm hurt.
[ He kind of wants to roll his eyes a little, but whatever. It's kind of cute how in love you are, and also kind of gross. All that commitment. ]
You were just very, very insistent there. Did you achieve some new level of 'taken'?
action;
they are extremely gross, though he didn't think the commitment aspect is what grosses people out. ]
In a way - [ he nods. thinking of proposing is more on-the-way to achieving than actually achieving it, but it's definitely progress. ]
Re: action;
[ He's just going to stare at you Winn. The stare that says he is waiting because he knows you aren't telling him everything. It's like a dog, waiting for you to give it a treat. ]
action;
Re: action;
[ His eyes widened a fraction and his eyebrows dip up. His lips parted ever so slightly in surprise, but he didn't say anything for a half second before finally - ]
That's a big step.
[ His face softened and he smiled softly. ]
I call being the officiant.
action;
maybe kryptonians have a word to describe the look on winn's face, but english requires a lot of them being strung together to even come close; there's a light blush on his cheeks, a smile in his eyes and his lips and his nose and the little lines in his forehead - full facial participation - that is moved and embarrassed and happy and hopeful and everything all at once. ]
She has to say yes first.
[ he was going to ask jim to officiate (providing kitty agreed and why would she object?), so he's extremely happy and grateful for that reaction. ]
Re: action;
[ He had thought of all those reasons, and he would be lying if his own renitence to say this was a good idea did not come from his own reservations about such things. But this wasn't him, was it? It was Winn, with his romantic sensibilities and his good, beautiful heart. With someone he loved and who seemed to love him in turn. He had worried, for a second, that it was because Chekov was here that he was doing this, in which case he would have strongly opposed such a thing, even been disappointed in Winn. But if he had been thinking of it since he came out of his coma? Ridiculous little brother. ]
Don't be ridiculous, of course she will.
You picked a ring yet? Or figured out how you're going to propose?
action;
No, not yet. [ he usually has 1001 ideas of grand romantic gestures he can do for kitty at any given time, but...but this has to be perfect and he's drawing a blank. plus, no ring yet. ]
Re: action;
[ Oh dear. He knows that look, those particular words said in that way. Kirk has never proposed to anyone before, but he's not without feelings and he has felt for people. So he reached over, poking at the center of Winn's forehead. ]
Don't overthink it. Just - feel for it, you know? You'll know when it's the right time.
action;
[ because this was before the nice stores on the asteroid so he was planning to make something himself. ]
I have some sketches, you wanna see?
Re: action;
Sure, I'd love to.
[ He set aside what he was working on to focus. ]
action;
he removes a thin notebook and puts the panel back in its place perfectly before going back to jim and handing it to him. ]
I've never really made jewelry so I kept it pretty basic... [ basic and well made > elaborate and poorly executed. ]
Re: action;
[ It's kind of cute, honestly. Really, you are ridiculous, little brother. Kirk took the papers, looking them over. He could see Winn's careful notes on the construction of it, and while yes it was basic, that was Winn. As far as engagement rings went, he thought it was touching. Anyone should be proud to wear something that someone had poured such love and time into. ]
But I think it's very you. If you really pour your hear into this - she'll love it. Besides, she doesn't seem like someone who would want anything to flashy or elaborate anyways.
action;
[ he worried about it looking too plain, too boring, too indistinguishable from other jewelry. ]
I kinda like this one - [ he points to the third design ] but, maybe this one is more doable - [ pointing to the fourth. ] What do you think?
Re: action;
[ He considered between the two. ]
Try the third, I think. You don't have to get it right the first time, right? Just work through it til you get it perfect. And engagement rings - well, they seem to me like they're really for you and your partner. So long as you put your heart into it and she likes it, it'll be special, wont' it? Just by those virtues and being your engagement ring alone.
action;
[ so he has to get it right with as little waste as possible. but he nods at jim's explanation, and there's definitely an unintentional smile there every time he says 'engagement'. it's like a cheat code for his brain he's completely unaware of. ]
Re: action;
Why don't you try modeling out of clay or some other material first? That should be more readily available than metals and gemstones, and you can practice pretty endlessly with it until you're satisfied.
action;
Re: action;
Hmm, true. You might want to consider a material mix then to allow for stability and reduce potential for tarnish. It could make for some interesting color variations too.
action;
Re: action;
Gunmetal I think is nice - a little darker than silver, or there's tungsten. They would show off a lighter colored jewel pretty well too.
[ A thought occurred just then. ]
You know, I wonder if Alphonse could make you some of the materials you need with his alchemy...
action;
[ that would be amazing. ]
Re: action;
You should go talk to him, see what it takes. He's told me a little bit about the alchemy, but I'm not sure what he would precisely need to transmute the metals. I'm sure he'd help you out though. Maybe he could even make them for you if you got cheaper metals from one of the planets come to.
action;
I'll ask. Thanks, Jim.
