[He really wants to take a moment to literal facepalm here. Instead, he rubs his chin and huffs.] Remember those attacks we told you about? Happened not long before you got here? I think I told you the Caprine was pretty badly damaged. We needed more repairs than I could pay for. [Pause. Uh. It's hard to explain without sounding completely stupid.] So I maybe got on some people's bad sides while trying to raise the money.

[It still sounds like something stupid went down, but Chekov can fill in the blanks. There are more important questions to ask anyway.] And how far on their bad sides are you? Do they want to rob you or murder you?
