[ When she'd decided she wanted to be a doctor, she'd considered several things, but family medicine seemed to fit best.]

I don't know. As a doctor, it's not always a good thing to be needed. [ But it was more her speed than waiting tables. ]

[teasing:] I sure hope you treat all your patrons the same way, Dr. Gilbert.

[ But okay, the idea of a doctor not being needed? That distracts his train of thought entirely, and he blinks back genuine surprise as he looks back at her. Right. Right, of course - this is also Elena's first star system. ]

No, but trust me, those star systems are the best ones. Atroma hasn't taken us to a lot of those lately, but uh - I like them better than the ones where you can't.

[ She gasps at him. ] Are you suggesting that I'd show favoritism? [ she's got mock offense down

[ He rolls his eyes a little at the insinuation, but honestly - he's glad he can talk about something that isn't his neon wardrobe or the favoritism Elena will show him tomorrow afternoon. ]

I like that we can actually make a difference. We'll go down and we'll see that people are hurt, and instead of grabbing odd jobs and vacationing, we're actually put to work. [He laughs, a little bitterly,] Is that bad?

That I'd rather work and stay up all night to cure someone rather than... you know, get up on stage?

[ Oh, she'll gladly talk about the neon wardrobe if he likes. His style has certainly changed since she last saw him.

By now, he's told Elena the truth, so it doesn't feel as weird admitting it: ] My parents - Alesci's parents - were doctors too. When you watch that, growing up, you want to do exactly what they're doing because you know just how much of a difference it makes.

Here? Not so much. I haven't seen so much partying since - [ he laughs, with some disbelief at what he's about to say next,] since Mystic Falls, honestly.
