The mild state of shock induced by this utterly new and fascinating discovery, however, is one Rip pulls himself from for the sake of continuing the conversation—and also, so he doesn't just wind up there silently gawking. He knows the look well enough, given how often some aspect of time travel has inspired it on the faces of his fellows.
He'd rather not wear it himself.]
A war through time? [Fortunately, that aspect is more than enough to draw Rip's attention, even if in full the explanation veers back towards the odd.
All the more reason for the demonstration, in the end.] I can see how it would be. I've never encountered anything quite like you before—at least, not to my knowledge.
no subject
[A war through time indeed - one between two factions with differing opinions on how to save the world. One wanting to destroy history and other to preserve it all to change the future.]
Most humans wouldn't encounter a tsukumogami, and certainly not one like me. Most tsukumogami don't have human bodies. I got this one 'cause of the war.
no subject
Yes, but--I'm not sure I've ever heard of any war put in quite those terms. [It's not entirely untrue. While the Time Masters had been a force, no one of equal measure ever rose to stand against them, certainly not in an all out war.]
I see. At least, I think I do. [It's all still quite new, so please forgive Rip.] Regardless, well met all the same--although I'll confess, it'll likely take me a bit to drop the formality completely.
[Old habits.]

[Spoilers....]
But if we do our jobs right, then it shouldn't destroy everything so it'll be fine.
[He scratches his chin and thinks for a moment before deciding that what he's said seems right as far as he knows.]
As for the formal thing? Do whatever you like, but know that I ain't gonna be returning it. It's just not how I was forged.
no subject
[It'll be interesting to see if that truth holds.
Doudaniki is quick to point out that Rip shouldn't expect overly polite address from him, and Rip in turn shakes his head.] That's not an issue, I assure you.
[It really can't be, after his time with the Legends. Rip had never expected a proper address from that lot, and good thing too.]
no subject
[But a lot of them were pulled and forged from all over the time stream. Some of them, like Imanotsurugi were actually created from legend, and then some like Otegine were recreated when their original bodies were lost to time. Sword forging was complicated.]
What about you? 2500 or something? 3000?
no subject
You're one of the first I've actually met from what I would see as the future: 2166. East London, England, to name a place as well.
no subject
[He has no idea how to even calculate Star Dates into his own knowledge of time, so he assumes it's in the future for him - albeit from a different universe.]
No idea where our Citadel is located other than "Japan" which is pretty much the most generic location ever. [He gives a shrug by way of apology.]
But you don't seem all that surprised by my talk about travelin' through time. Can you guys do it in your world, too?
no subject
[Hopefully soon. Rip is quite curious about just what brand of ship he's ended up on.
He waves off the apology; in the end, it likely doesn't matter precisely where either of them is from. There certainly seems to be no pattern to the times from which prisoners are pulled, and equally, Rip suspects there won't be one to the locations either.
What Doudanuki asks next, however, is a fairly astute question. Rip hardly skips a beat before giving his answer.] It's something that's long been speculated about, have no doubt. But I get the feeling that there's a great deal about your world I should expect to be extraordinary anyway, given what you've already described of it.
no subject
[At least the ones he's met aren't bad.
He shrugs at the comment about his world being "extraordinary" and notes that Rip doesn't confirm or deny his question. Maybe time travel is possible, but this guy is sworn to secrecy. Or it's not possible yet, but will be someday.]
It's pretty much normal for most of Time until we come around. From what I've heard of the past, it wasn't all that different from most modern worlds. People went to work, had families, fought in minor wars, Japan stayed mostly out of it, then the world went to hell and we got called up as a last ditch effort to stop everythin' from collapsin' in on itself.
It's only been a year or two though, so we're all still learning about what most of you consider "modern" times.
no subject
[Certainly it would seem to fall in line with those Rip's met thus far. At this point, he's more quietly worried about how "settled" they might all be, rather than any brand of malice they might hold.
Doudanuki's rather right to pick up on the fact that Rip has skirted the question; he would continue to do so, if the topic was pressed. But instead he speaks a bit more about his own experience, what he's learned of the past as it existed, leaving Rip to nod.]
It does sound rather ordinary—which from the outside, can be rather strange, I suppose. [He knows rather well in fact, but again, Rip's not trying to drop too many hints that he's a time traveler himself.]
And before you quite managed it, you were brought here? [Along with others, perhaps.] How long ago, if I may ask?
no subject
[He left that up to the other swords, ones like Midare or Kashuu. They were a lot more interested in learning about the world outside of their purpose for whatever reason.]
But yeah, I got here... [He stares up at the ceiling for a bit, thinking. When the realization dawns on him, his jaw sets and his face turns grim. He's been stuck here far too long. Not long in the lifespan of a sword, but for humans and his comrades? He's already been gone far, far too long.]
...Nngh, about four or five months.
