[ the comm seems to be haphazardly leaning against something, and the image you get is crooked. a sleeping man, who almost instantly awakes with a start. no scream, mercifully, he's quite over screamer videos, and besides, it wouldn't really be that surprising under the circumstances, now, would it? his eyes dart around the room, his feet flying off the cot and touching the ground. the moment he speaks, his accent undeniably and unapologetically identifies him as an englishman. ]

Not again - [ he groans, looking around him. the first time he was knocked out and kidnapped happened because he was foolish, he trusted a friend when clearly he had overestimated the bond, bloody spies, he's had his fill of bloody spies. but this time - he has no idea what happened. one minute, he's in a pod, sailing to freedom and the next - he's in this bed. he must not have deactivated something. do they have a blasted tracker beam on these things? so paranoid! ] Oi, @therealshield, you forgot to paint your eagle - I'm gonna have to deduct your merits - [ no answer. the room really doesn't seem like anywhere his previous captors kept him in, and that's rarely a coincidence. he gets up, and the comm seems to slip off whatever it was leaning against and end up in a new position, one that shows the back of the man, as he walks towards a window. ] ...you have got to be joking.

[ and a moment later ] Bloody aliens!

[ the man comes in and out of the frame, as he's clearly examining his surroundings, before he heads back to check on what he's got by his cot, and notices the comm. picking it up, you now get a close up of his face - ] Little red light - you're either going to explode or - [ that sure looks like a camera, doesn't it? he holds it directly in front of his face. ]

Take me to your leader.

It certainly sounds safer. Leagues more cozy. [ and she can't argue with a man's choice to leave the career, should it come to it. although seeing as she doesn't know hunter all that well, she admits he might be putting up a 'brave face' so to speak. ]

Add a decent cottage pie to the menu, and I'd be sold.

[ he's well aware that this job isn't one he can do forever, but he's not quite done with it yet, either. ]

The secret to a good cottage pie - mince your own meat. Putting it through a mincing machine is no more than mutilating the carcass into inedible stodge.

I'm sure you must be right. Unfortunately, the advice is lost on me -- I absolutely do not cook.

[ well. except when captain america coaxes her into helping him in the kitchen, but that's a secret worthy of fort knox. ]

You should give it a try, it's rather relaxing.

[ everybody needs a hobby, something to do when there's nothing productive to be done, nothing to keep their minds from reliving the horrors they've endured. something to keep them from seeking out fake productivity that ends up biting them in the arse. ]

I much prefer the eating part to the preparing part. [ luckily, she knows so many decent-to-wonderful cooks. hers is a carefully cultivated social circle. ] Far more relaxing.

[ there seems to be a suspicious amount of foreshadowing here, he's going to end up cooking for her, isn't he? ]

That part's quite enjoyable too, particularly when you have good produce to work with. Can't imagine we get much of that on these bloody things - [ he taps the wall of the ship. he has no intention of doing much (or any) relaxing here. he's angry, and he will feed that anger until it explodes in the face of whoever it was who put him here. ]

Not much of anything, no. Some try and grow what they can. Or forage on the planets where we stop. [ ... ] The Starstruck currently finds itself with an abundance of pumpkins, courtesy of its first mate's green thumb.

[ help her she's drowning in pumpkin soup. ]

[ captain america took up gardening? now this he has to see. and take pictures of. what - it's for coulson!

he does perk up at the mention of an actual vegetable, though. ]

Pumpkins I can work with. Do we have any flour?

[ is that really what he's talking to agent carter about? seems like it. ]

We've got some. [ ... ] I can't speak for the other ships. Supplies often depend on whether you've got someone on board with a cook's augment.

[ peggy huffs. she doesn't really want to put the man on the back foot (again) but it's worth asking: ] Has anyone explained the augments to you?

The implants? I got about as far as hi-tech shock collar.

[ cooking augment? what the devil is that? they get assigned a job? well screw that, if they want him to cook it's no longer any fun, now, is it. ]

I take it I have more to look forward to.

The come with intel -- the usefulness thereof is up to you to decide. [ peggy pulls aside a curtain of dark curls and reveals her own bit of new-age plastic sculpted to the side of her neck. ] How to use the networks, which buttons to press on the shuttles, not to mention half-a-dozen languages. Each one can be more specialized, however: cooking, piloting, engineering, so on and such.

[ the look on his face is enough to divulge what he thinks of that usefulness - it can suck it. he's got on this long on what's inside his head, clearly it's not so lacking. anything that messes with his mind is an unwelcome addition. ]

What'd you land on?

Communications.

[ her answer is a single word. if he really is thick with shield, then she assumes he doesn't need her to spell out for him how such an augment might just about barely be discernible within her existing (assumed) set of skills. although she's recently taken a turn for humint, she did cut her teeth gathering sigint. ]

[ he never attended shield academy, all the history he's learned comes from the occasional blurt from coulson or simmons, or his recent excursion into ssr files. additionally, he hasn't the foggiest what a communications augment entails. making calls? are they the space secretaries? he'll take his tea strong and hot, thanks, love. ]

Are you sure it's working? Or, does it only activate in braille? [ care to elaborate just a touch more? ]

[ don't you dare ask her to fix a drink, lance hunter. ]

I can run the communications consoles aboard my ship -- so, yes. It's working. I've got a better handle on scrambling broadcasts than someone without this specialization. I don't do much comms work these days, however. Not unless it's needed.

[ too busy being the captain. ]

[ telling him that is only going to make him want to do it more. ]

Picket up a hobby after all?

I wouldn't call it a hobby, exactly. One would have to be a terrible masochist to consider captaining a space ship of any sort to be hobbywork.

[ a picture emerges, then. slowly but certainly: agent peggy carter, not yet the steel madam director of what will eventually be shield, has found herself another kind of command. by fluke and by chance, perhaps, more than merit. but the crew is hers, now; she's got a burden of care over the starstruck.

along with her aforementioned first mate, of course. ]

One would have to be a terrible masochist to found a secret agency.

[ so, he's not really seeing the issue here.

for their sake, he hopes whoever his captain ends up being keep their expectations low because he has no intention of bowing down to any rank that hasn't earned it. he didn't enlist to this fleet. ]

You know -- I actually agree with you on that count. [ she feels so far away from something as wild as co-founding shield -- even if she has started to at least warm up to the idea of fostering talent in others. ]

'Chief' or 'administrator' -- or whatever it is they call the top cheese at SHIELD -- was never part of my career plans.

Director. Or at least, that's the modern lingo, I skipped my SHIELD history.

[ and the academy altogether. it's much easier to become an operative of an illegitimate agency, he must say. ]

And thereby making yourself of little use to my nosiness. I understand. [ an almost-smile, more at the vagaries of fate than at anything else. ] Director, however. How gentle a word to settle on: to direct, rather than command.

[ -- probably not howard's suggestion. though it doesn't sound much like herself, either. ]

I must admit all I know about SHIELD I've learned second-hand.

[ it's an added bonus, but he was simply being truthful. he doesn't bother to correct her, though. ]

SHIELD always did seem overly keen on deception.

[ because make no mistake, the director is the commander. when he's good - he's happy to follow. when it's a council of twats - he's happy to steal their shit and go warn the genuine article. ]

You mean you didn't take a detour into the future before ending up here? You're missing out, it gets particularly colorful around the 60s. [ the fashion, that is. ]

So I hear. [ dry as you like. ] There's a very real temptation to learn about one's would-be life -- to wonder if one enjoyed the 60s. The 70s. So on, so forth.

[ which means she likely knows she's still alive up to a point. ]

The various Avengers passing through from time to time have offered a lot that's enlightening -- although I understand their perspective on the matter is rather narrow.

[ she'd hesitate to trust even steve's version of what happened within shield, and what happened after. ]

[ rather narrow, since shield's public demise he would say it's about as on-par as hers. ]

As delightful as I find these laps around the bush, it's been a long day as I've said.
