It's just- [Might as well get it out] You see, I was kinda training to be the next pilot, because we didn't have one but the captain insisted I needed to train first, but then you showed up?
So I wanted to know if you actually, you know, knew how to fly.
Yes. I know how to fly. And I was assigned to that spot when I got here.
[He sighed, but the annoyance seemed to fade off for now.]
I'm a pilot back home, too. I was on track to be a fighter pilot, actually. [Then... stuff happened.] Right before I ended up here, I was part of a team of pilots that defend the universe.
[He was finding that telling people about giant robot lions that transform and combine to make a giant robot fighter was harder to explain than previously thought. He just tended to get a lot of weird stares and awkward 'okay' responses, like they all thought he was nuts.]
Yeah. It's like a portal through space that links two places together that are normally really far apart, and makes it faster to get between them.
[It was pretty much the best way Keith could describe that, so he hoped it helped. He understood the concept, but the actual science of it was a bit beyond him.]
[Hey, who was Keith to crush some kid's pilot dreams? He had them, too, after all, which is how he ended up being one. He wasn't going to tell someone else they couldn't. Unless they were really bad, but still... even then, it was just about practice.
He stepped back inside and motioned for Sora to take a seat.]
Alright. Go ahead.
[He'd take the copilot seat. It was awkward for him because he did tend to like being in control, but this wasn't that kind of situation.]
[Keith just crossed his arms and watched Sora do his thing, leaning back in the seat a bit to get comfortable. He could see the kid had been practicing.]
[He starts running in the simulation. It's clear he's not as good as Keith, but he's not terrible either. He's been pretty serious about wanting to be a pilot after all]
[As long as he didn't crash the simulator, he was already a step ahead of Lance at this stage.
Still, Keith could be something of a backseat (or, in this case, sideseat) pilot, so he had to bite his tongue in order to give Sora a chance. It took a lot of self-restraint not to offer little bits of, "Hey, turn here," or "Pull up a little more," or "You can do that faster, you know."]
[So, even if he hadn't been lucky and landed directly in a pilot position, he could have transferred. He was kind of curious as to what that involved, though.]
How does that work?
[He was still watching Sora, too. So far, so good.]
[He keeps flying with the simulation. He manages a few minutes more a rogue asteroid flies into his path and he's unable to swerve in time- making it crash. GAME OVER]
[Keith almost reached out and grabbed the controls, but barely managed to force himself not to. This hadn't just been a test of Sora's piloting skills, but a test of Keith's thin patience.]
Right.
Well, if you know it's there, why do you keep hitting it?

You could have just asked if you had really wanted to just watch.

What, really??
The whole universe? That's really big!

But, it helps that the ship we're on has the ability to create wormholes. We can move across long distances a lot faster that way.

[Da fuq is that]

Man, that'd make things so much easier!
no subject
Yeah. It is pretty handy for getting places fast. [Or away from places fast. They'd used it for that, too.
Keith had calmed down by now from his initial introduction to Sora. He glanced around the shuttle again for a moment, and then nodded to the cockpit.]
You said you wanted to be a pilot, too, right? Why don't you show me what you can do?
no subject
[And man, that makes his eyes light up since he was pretty sure he was going to wind up on a List or something. ]
Really? You mean it? Sure I can!

Aye aye!
[Without any further delay, he's hopping into the seat and starting up the simulation. From the looks of it? He's done this several times before]
no subject
You don't have an augment for this, do you?

People can change their augments?
no subject
Yeah, you can. There's forms in the network to fill out for it.

Dunno. Never tried it before.
[And now he's starting to reach the part of the simulation that ups the difficulty. That was a close call with an asteroid!]
no subject
Well, I guess we'll find out, then.
[He worked at keeping his voice level, and then decided to go quiet for now. Clearly having a conversation was a distraction. That was totally it...]

[He keeps flying with the simulation. He manages a few minutes more a rogue asteroid flies into his path and he's unable to swerve in time- making it crash. GAME OVER]
Dangit- it's always that one!
no subject
Right.

[He couldn't help it.]
