Is there anything that you need right now?

Winn would sing to me. He had a great voice.
...I sound like a child.

Since I do not, I can't in good conscience offer to do that.
Even if you do, [and he doesn't think that she does] I think that you're allowed. Needing time to be sad because someone you love has left doesn't make you any less brave or strong.

So maybe they have both done a lot more practicing than anyone would wish for.]
Then it's decided: we should both stop practicing. We will see if the universe agrees.

It's familiar in a way. A week after Reid disappeared on the night he should have returned—and in fact did return, but didn't contact her—she was so overcome with grief and pain that she went to Tyki's bar of all places. She got drunk until she thought she wouldn't be able to feel it anymore, but it never left. It just got a little blurred, but the anguish still clung to her. He stopped her before she could black it out completely. He carried her back to his place and then the villain of the story just held her and nothing else as she sobbed against him. And the next day she woke up to a message from Reid wanting to see her. Spending that night with Tyki wasn't what splinted them and kept them from ever being happy together again just like him avoiding her that day hadn't been the tipping point. There were so many fractures that added up and a resentment that grew in the profiler she never felt. Not in her timeline.
But right now she's not reflecting on these past choices. She's not thinking ahead to what kind of story she wants to be able to tell a returning Winn. This is survival. This is getting from one moment to the next. And right now the thing that feels like it has the best shot of getting her to the next moment is being with someone she trusts like Chekov.]
You're too smart for that. Too much Star Fleet training.

But then... how can he want to put distance between them when this is the first time since he's come to the Fleet that he's felt needed?]
Too well-trained, maybe. Not too smart. [Really, there are ways in which he's not that bright.]

You're an actual child genius. Are you trying to ruin the curve for the others?
no subject
Which is definitely a way of feeling needed.]
Was. Now I'm an adult in a universe where almost everyone else is also a genius, including you.

Do you think that's as annoying as I do? Especially when most of you have had all the schooling?

...I liked that I could take some advanced classes at the prison like Reid's.
no subject
What would you want to learn, if classes were offered here?
no subject
Mm...classes... The sciences. Engineering. I've been doing a lot of physics studying since I got here.
no subject
If you think that I know anything you would like to learn... I like teaching. Or I think I would. It was what I was doing in the prison that time we were twenty years ahead.
