It was kind of our hosts to give us gifts after keeping us on the Marsiva and making us share far, far too much with each other, but...

[The Russian pulls his lovely gift basket into view. In addition to the candies and fudge and pickled herring (he is grateful for all of these things, thank you space hosts), there are a few additional items that he is less amused by.]

Did anyone else find their choice in gifts, er... slightly insulting?

Although it was thoughtful of them, I admit, to provide a shirt [it says "I <3 bad boys," for the Russian speakers out there] for my girlfriend to wear once I grow her.

[Sarcasm. That was definitely sarcasm.]

[If Pavel isn't poking around his quarters on the Tourist, then he's going for a run on the Iskaulit. In either case, he is making no real effort to be sociable. It's not that he doesn't want to talk to people, it's just that there are a lot of things that he doesn't want to talk about. Everyone knows that the only sure way to avoid certain topics of conversation is to avoid talking entirely.

Any attempts on his part to keep quiet will fail miserably if he's approached. Being a person who likes other people is so hard sometimes.]

Yes, that is the most significant problem--what to do if we are able to break away from the Marsiva. We would need to create a stable wormhole of some kind, of course, and then also navigate to the correct universes. Assuming that none of our homes are in this universe, I mean.

It's safe to assume they're not. Or if they are, we're not in the right time for them, which might as well be the same thing.

It is much simpler to go to a different time than to go to a different universe.... but no, this universe can't be the one that most of us belong in.

It doesn't matter very much. No one is escaping in the near future.

Probably not. On the other hand, who knows? It all depends on what opportunities we find.

[Not optimism so much as a reminder to herself to stay sharp.]

Something seems to have touched a nerve. I don't know if it was us, or the other fleet, or the hosts, but someone must be behind it.

They were our lead coming in. And that's who the cannon fired on.

Ah... I was unaware of this fleet's history with the other.

I hope that no one deems it necessary to fire a cannon at us. Although I understand that dying is often temporary here, it's still something that I would prefer not to do again. Not more than once more, anyway.

I don't know all the details myself. I know they showed up once before and helped when the fleet—our fleet—was attacked. I also know they're very close lipped about what's going on here.

[She shakes her head.]

It's only temporary if they bring us back. Who knows if they'd do that if they were the ones killing us.

Is it known if anyone from that fleet is still alive?

...A good point. We should all try very hard to not die. But knowing so little, who can say how to accomplish that?

If it is, no one's told me. After what happened... I think probably there are, yes. The cannon didn't fire enough to destroy an entire fleet.

[A grim smile at that.]

I always try not to die. So far, I've done okay at it.

Then maybe the remnants of that fleet will contact us soon with more information.

Thank you, Tasha. [Are we on a level where diminutives are okay? Maybe? He's not thinking too much about it.] I can promise you that not dying and preventing others around me from dying are always my top priorities.

[Natasha smiles a little. She doesn't seem bothered by it. It's been a while since she heard that diminutive, and on some level it's a nice change from the far more American "Nat." It brings back memories, at least.]

I believe that of you. You seem like the type.

I hope that is a good thing. [It could be a cowardly thing.]

Suppose it depends how far you'll go to do that. But protecting the people you know... I don't think that's a bad thing.

Everyone deserves to be protected, known or not. [Except Natasha doesn't come from a background that supports idealism, does she?] ...Although that isn't realistic in many situations, of course.

In a perfect world, you would be right. But the world isn't perfect at all.

I'm shocked and dismayed to hear this. [He is neither of those things.]

Hm. Her tone is more than a little amused, and just a bit tired too. Are you getting fresh with me?

I am, yes. [No shame. Then, gently:] Overall, I would say that it isn't such a bad multiverse. Even the most imperfect worlds that I have been told about have good people in them.

[outstandingbalance]

There is that. But on the other hand, good people still end up in even the most imperfect worlds.

[candothat]

That makes the imperfect world a little better.

It does. Seems unfair to the good people though.

If things were always fair to good people, they would have few opportunities to practice being good.
