Anyway- [He grabs the book and tugs it closer, elbowing Sorey in the gut as he moves.] Let's see what the council did to get themselves fed to cows. Open rebellion? Conspiracy against the people? Or maybe they just looked at her funny.

Mikleo scans over the text for a moment, then reads aloud,]

"Her Royal Eminence was for the most part benevolent and loved by her people, but her quirks were many, including the most infamous fixation on various breeds of interstellar house bovines. These meat-eating creatures prowled her castle as pets, guarding her secrets, and were her favourite method of delivering justice to her enemies." ...If it's a matter of justice, they probably broke the law.

[Mikleo tugs the corner of the book to keep it close as Sorey attempts to pull him back. Stop that, you're not his real dad]

There's a ton of inappropriate stuff in books and history! Gramps would take our stuff away all the time! [stop squirming and let him take this he's just gonna flip through it!!! gosh!!!!!]

[The effect is almost immediate; Mikleo halts in his struggling, hands jerking away from the book as if burned. He wriggles himself free of Sorey's grasp and sits back down a cushion away from him, gaze pointedly averted, focusing on anything but Sorey. It's very coded "I'm upset with you" behaviour for Mikleo, even at his age.]

[aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh heck. He really screwed that up; let himself get all annoyed and said something stupid.

Sorey slowly closes the book and sets it down on the couch between them, drawing up a leg.] Mikleo...I'm sorry, I didn't- I shouldn't have said that.

[nerdeology]

[Mikleo is reluctant to respond so quickly, but he can't bring himself to give Sorey the silent treatment for long; he's still lost in the middle of this strange world, none of the usual hideouts to go be on his own or anything. He doesn't have the kind of freedom he has in Elysia.]

You meant it though, didn't you? You are taking care of me. We're not real partners anymore.

...yeah. We're still best friends, but it's a little different right now. [Trying to gloss it over isn't going to do anything; even this young, Mikleo could smell a lie from a mile away.] That doesn't mean I have the right to talk down to you like that. I'm sorry.

[nerdeology]

[There's something very relieving about hearing the honest truth from Sorey, even if it's unpleasant, and Mikleo unwinds just a little, though he still ducks his head and hugs his knees to his chest. Sometimes the truth really sucks.]

I hope I grow up soon, [he mumbles, half to himself but still loud enough for Sorey to hear.]

[Sorey turns a little more, sitting cross-legged on the couch to face Mikleo and holding his ankles.] Do you feel left behind because I'm older?

[nerdeology]

[Mikleo scuffs a hand under his nose and cautiously looks up at Sorey, brows furrowed.]

Yeah... I always thought we'd grow up together. And even if you say we do, or that I'm older, it's not how I feel now.

[monolike]

Makes sense. [It's not as if Mikleo could just be satisfied with an explanation like that, either.] Okay, well, let's brainstorm. What should we do about this? I have to look out for you, but I don't want to make you feel bad. Can you think of anything that might help?

[nerdeology]

[Mikleo uncurls a little bit, focusing on the problem; he's always found it easier to hash through the logical issues rather than the emotional ones, and if fixing the former will resolve the latter, then it works out.]

Um... maybe if you read the books, then I can take notes of anything interesting? Then you can veto any stories that- that Gramps would, and we can look at books that I don't know the language for... would that work?

I like that idea. [There, he looks a little more evenly keeled now. Sorey brightens and scoots a little closer.] It's more like teamwork that way.
