[It's been a pretty crappy month for Fenris, most of it his own doing. He'd been hoping September might at least find some semblance of normalcy again. A little quiet and calm to collect himself once more. He should have known better- Atroma is very good at making sure that sort of thing absolutely does not happen.]

Kirk is asleep, and will not wake, so I assume this is Atroma's doing. I will do my best to take care of the Tourist until he wakes, but I will need some help running the Space Bar until Nami returns to us. It will be rather tricky to manage the two.

[He might not sleep well, but he still needs to try and DO that. Plus he absolutely does not trust Atroma to not do something awful while Kirk sleeps. Given everyone's weird nightmares recently, he'd put good coin on something awful happening, in fact. It's his job to make sure no one dies horribly or the Tourist gets set on fire in Kirk's absence, and it's one of the few jobs he'll actually take seriously.]

How close are you to the captain?

[Kirk, obviously. Not any of those other captains.]

[Fenris was not expecting that question, and his eyebrows rise in surprise. He takes a moment to figure out an answer, his posture a little more guarded. ]

...I am not sure if you want specific details or?

[He'll just...hedge it for a few moments, don't mind him. ]

[His mission is to keep everyone on their toes!]

No, no--nothing specific. I have been led to believe that he has a number of... ah, relationships in the fleet, and I'm concerned.

It was a stupid question, you can ignore me.

[He pokes at a few buttons on his station's console, slightly embarrassed.]

[Fenris lets out a long sigh. Normally, he'd tell Pavel to mind his own damn business- a part of him still wants to say that. But he likes the kid, and he knows there's probably no one in the Fleet who knows or cares for Kirk was much as Pavel does. ]

He does, and I am, indeed one of them. I could not tell you much about the others.

...What are you concerned about? His feelings?

[candothat]

[Chekov keeps his attention on his console.]

I am more concerned about yours.

[wolfuncaged]

Oh.

[Fenris shifts his feet, staring down at them, a touch uncomfortable. He'll never deal with people genuinely caring about him as well as he'd like. A small, bitter part of his mind is always looking for the trap. ]

That is...decent of you. But I am content with how things are. It is...easier.

[candothat]

[Of course Fenris is fine. He's an adult who knows how to guard himself, not a silly twenty-something year-old who's prone to stupid romantic attachments. No need to worry that Kirk will break his heart.

Chekov glances over at him to gauge just how awkward he's made life.]

Okay. I'm glad that it's easy. [hopefully:] And now you can forget that I asked anything?

[wolfuncaged]

[Fenris lets out a low chuckle, shaking his head. ]

I think I can manage that. But your concern has been noted, I appreciate it- unneeded as it is.

[candothat]

[Moving right along then! Thank you, sir.]

If you ever find that there is too much unneeded concern, please tell me. I would hate to irritate my new captain.

[wolfuncaged]

I assure you, you will be the first person to know in such a case. [He's not shy about airing his feelings, after all. ] Hmm- though hopefully it is only a temporary situation.

[candothat]

Thank you.

Captain Kirk will wake up. [Said with absolute certainty.] He always comes back. Not always in a timely way, and not always with all of his memories, but he does.

[wolfuncaged]

[There's a real fear for Fenris. That Kirk will wake up and remember nothing. That Atroma would be that cruel. He exhales, steadily. ]

I am sure he will. He's very tenacious like that.

[candothat]

[As irritating as that would be, Chekov isn't afraid of memory loss. Partly because Kirk would still know him, partly because he has forgotten everything three times already in the time Chekov has spent in games other universes. It's routine.]

Very. Did he tell you that he came back from the dead once?

[wolfuncaged]

I-

[Fenris blinks, then sits back, confused. ]

No. I think he skipped that story.

[candothat]

Ah. Well. He did, and he came back.

[Back to looking awkwardly to the console. Come on, Pavel, you know how to be a real human who doesn't wreck conversations.]

...Which isn't so strange here, really. Many people I have talked to have died at least once. I did as well--not at home, though. At home, the captain is the only person I know of who has done that.

[wolfuncaged]

So he...returned from the death back home?

[HOW THE HELL, KIRK? ]

How in the Maker's name did he even manage that? Did he just charm himself out of death's grasp?

[HE COULD BELIEVE IT. ]

That would be more believable than what happened.

[He probably shouldn't be sharing this. Oh well!]

He was revived using the blood of a genetically-engineered superhuman. I will not pretend to understand how this was possible.

I certainly would have believed that.

[If anyone could charm death, it'd be James Kirk.]

Oh. That's...rather bizarre. Does this mean he is now technically immortal?

[candothat]

[Considering all of the other times he should probably have died, Jim might very well be doing that.]

I have no idea, but I'm doubtful. I think that the doctor would worry less about him if that was the case.

[wolfuncaged]

Ah yes, McCoy. True, he would probably be much more relaxed if that were the case.

[Still, it sounds too much like blood magic for his comfort.]

And he suffered no adverse effects?

[candothat]

Maybe not much more. He doesn't seem capable of being relaxed.

Not to my knowledge, no, but that is something that I doubt he would share with me.

[Even after years of serving together (and, more recently, traipsing about a planet together), there's still a distance between Pavel and Jim. Or at least a perceived distance on Pavel's end. His tendency to refer to the captain by title might have given that one away.]

Not a bad trait to have. He will likely never be taken off guard.

[Much harder to stab someone, like that. Fenris cants his head, frowning. ]

No? I assumed you were something of his confidant.

[candothat]

I hope that he is never in a situation where his wariness is tested like that.

[McCoy is a lot more likely to do the stabbing, but with hyposprays instead of knives. He's a vicious man.]

You did? [Chekov is visibly surprised.] No, no... the doctor is a confidant, maybe Commander Spock sometimes. I'm not certain what I am. He tries to not make me worry about him.

[wolfuncaged]

As do I.

[That's a surprise to him. ]

Strange. He seems to value your input more than perhaps you realise.

[Fenris, are you just saying this to make him feel better because Kirk and Kitty are both in comas and life is the worst but not as bad as it will be with the planet-dying thing and all?]

I would like to believe that. [And, maybe a bit hopefully:] Do you really think that he does?
