the veil is thin . . .
[ On the night of the 16th, the feeling of tension and horrid anticipation comes to a head. Everything stops when the sun goes down-- even the ever-present music in the hoppingest part of the city center. One by one, everyone turns their eyes to the skies. The young and old alike pour out of their houses, some in bare feet, and they point to the velvety blanket of stars.
It takes a second to find it, especially if one is unaccustomed to the starscape. But even a casual observer can see it.
A brightly-shining star, larger than the others, and growing larger.
An announcement cuts across all communication channels that encourages people to evacuate to the space station, but it’s clear that these are just people and they’ll need some help. Supplies, equipment, organization, there’s something for everyone to do.
Civilization is disrupted by a panicked stampede of people vying for limited seats aboard spacefaring craft. Within hours, there will be crushed glass, looting, and chaos.
The clock is ticking. Will you help? Or would you rather watch the dying gasps of a Singing Planet from a safe distance? ]
[OOC: Please see this post for plot details. Phase two has begun! Feel free to use this post as a reaction post, mingle, etc. or make your own!]

[He really shouldn't be here now. He just couldn't ignore a life in danger. Most would have said his last trip should have been about two trips ago.]
WHAT ABOUT YOU? CAN YOU ACTUALLY TELEPORT BACK TO THE SHUTTLE FROM HERE?!
[As that question sounds like Kurt is debating staying behind. At this point Vash isn't sure he can allow that if he can't teleport far enough away to be safe in the next few minutes if needed.]

Darkholmes are dangerous with the truth, aren't they?]
BESIDES, YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH ROOM TO CARRY ANYONE ELSE. THOSE HARNESSES MIGHT SNAP IF YOU TRY TO WRAP THEM AROUND TWO PEOPLE, AND IF I TRY TO CLING TO THE WALLS I'LL BE KNOCKED LOOSE WHEN WE GO THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE!

DON'T WORRY, I'VE GOT A SHUTTLE THAT WAY IF I NEED IT; THAT'S WHERE WE WERE HEADING! [He motions in the direction they'd been trudging, toward a shuttle that actually is parked half a mile away.] I'M GOING TO CHECK ON THEIR GRANDCHILDREN, SEE IF THEY'VE EVACUATED, AND THEN I'M GONE!
[Because he honestly has no intention of dying on this planet; the people who choose to die with their planet are free to, but he's not about to let these children suffer the same fate as their parents. Kurt manages a tight smile, more pained than he realizes, and starts toward the door.] RUN LIKE HELL, VASH. IF I SEE YOU COME BACK, I'LL KILL YOU MYSELF!

[He's not leaving kids alone to die here.
The shuttles engines roar back to life. Vash is ready to go as he gives one more look to Kurt as the door beings to shut. An eerier reminder of one of his worst childhood days.] AND YOU STAY SAFE TOO. I'M SERIOUS. DON'T MAKE ME TELL KITTY MORE BAD NEWS WHEN SHE WAKES UP.

[He doesn't stick around long enough to hear an answer; the moment his feet touch the faintly rumbling ground, Kurt drops to all fours and takes off at a dead run. Even with the sudden limp on his left side, he vanishes quickly into the whirling dust stirred by the planet's distress.
If he hurries, he might make it without risking a blind teleport. If he's clever, he might be able to convince the children's father to let them leave. If he's fortunate, for once he won't pull defeat from the jaws of victory.]

Before they even fully dock at the station Vash flips on his communicator as he goes in to land.]
Kurt! Where are you? Are you still on the planet or have you beaten us back?
[He is going to be rather angry by the end of the call.]
