the veil is thin . . .
[ On the night of the 16th, the feeling of tension and horrid anticipation comes to a head. Everything stops when the sun goes down-- even the ever-present music in the hoppingest part of the city center. One by one, everyone turns their eyes to the skies. The young and old alike pour out of their houses, some in bare feet, and they point to the velvety blanket of stars.
It takes a second to find it, especially if one is unaccustomed to the starscape. But even a casual observer can see it.
A brightly-shining star, larger than the others, and growing larger.
An announcement cuts across all communication channels that encourages people to evacuate to the space station, but it’s clear that these are just people and they’ll need some help. Supplies, equipment, organization, there’s something for everyone to do.
Civilization is disrupted by a panicked stampede of people vying for limited seats aboard spacefaring craft. Within hours, there will be crushed glass, looting, and chaos.
The clock is ticking. Will you help? Or would you rather watch the dying gasps of a Singing Planet from a safe distance? ]

The girl grimaces as she looks at Justice, and Justice eyes her warily, like he's about to pick up a wild animal. He passes the rings to Riona and then takes the girl very carefully, as though she were made of glass. He doesn't know how to hold her but he knows that he doesn't want to drop or hurt her, so he holds her awkwardly away from him in a position that's uncomfortable for both of them. The girl rests her arms on his wrists.] "You don't hold kids much, do you?"
No, I do not.
no subject
It's okay little one. Look, I have your rings.
[The baby reaches for them and Riona lets her grab them. That seems to calm her down, but before Riona goes to pick her up, she happens to glance over. And that's when she sees Justice holding the girl out awkwardly. She sighs.]
Hang on sweetheart.
[She stalks back over to the kid and Justice. Good Maker does she have to do everything around here??]
Here. You need to get your arm under her, and perch her on your hip. Like how I was doing it. [She grabs the girl again, but only to position her.] Like that. One arm under her tush, or both if that feels more comfortable. And yes, dear, you're going to have to hold onto him. I promise he doesn't smell and won't bite.

In Justice's defense, he has literally never physically interacted with a child in his life. It's always been in dreams. Or occasionally when they were dead and trapped in the Fade for some reason.
He watches Riona like a confused puppy as she demonstrates how to hold the child, and the girl, for her part, grimaces at the confirmation that she has to hold onto Justice. Then Riona hands the girl to Justice again, and Justice can only look a little like a frightened animal before he takes the child carefully in his arms.
He's slow and awkward about sliding his arms where they're supposed to be. The girl doesn't immediately hold onto him, eyeing him warily instead.] This doesn't... break mortal rules about touching? [He still doesn't really understand those, but this feels like it should. He doesn't know this child well, but he's holding her close. He's noticed that contact is usually very limited between strangers. Are the rules different for children? Or different when one of the mortals has stubby legs and needs to be carried to keep up?
The girl just gets more skeptical.] "Mortals? Are you a vampire? Is that why you look dead?"
[Justice shakes his head, turning to look at the girl.] No. I am a spirit.
"Does that mean you're a ghost?"
No, I am a spirit. I am from the realm of dreams.
[The girl looks increasingly skeptical, but she seems less afraid of him than she was before.]

This is how children are normally held. Ordinarily I would say that you should not pick up a child without their consent but we're in an emergency, so that trumps it.
[She's also trying hard not to laugh at the little girl. You kind of are a ghost, Justice...]
The spirits where he and I are from are different than the ones you think of. Spirits back home embody an idea or emotion, like rage or joy. But he is a bit spooky like a ghost, no? [With that shit-eating grin, Riona leaves them be and heads back for the baby. She picks her up, wrapping her loosely in a blanket.]
There we go.

[She finally leans her head on Justice's shoulder and wraps her arms around his neck. Immediately, he goes rigid, trying to process the new amount of contact.
Gradually, he relaxes, putting a steadying hand on her back. He can do this. He can do this.] I can lead us to their parents. They're by the ships for now.
no subject
Take the lead and I'll follow. And we best hurry before they're boarded and we have to try and find them on that station.

Justice keeps a firm grip on the girl as he climbs up the stairs. Just as they pass the foyer, the girl reaches out a hand.] "Wait, my gran's--"
[Justice doesn't pause. He opens the drawer of the table standing next to the front door, pulling out a crystal necklace and draping around the little girl's neck. She falls silent immediately, fingering the crystals.] If you wish for anything else, speak quickly. You will not return to this place.
[The girl glances sadly back into her house, but shakes her head, holding her stuffed toy close.]
no subject
It's all right sweetheart. It'll be hard for awhile, but someday you'll be able to make a new home.
[She wishes it would be easy, and that this girl wouldn't have to go through it at all, but there's no avoiding it.]

He keeps a clipped pace, frowning at the meteor growing larger in the sky. The girl catches a glimpse and her eyes go wide with fear, her fingers becoming white with how hard she clutches her toy. Justice feels the fear spiking, and he glances at Riona desperately, searching for some guidance on how to soothe a child even as he just tries.] You will be evacuated before the meteor hits. We found you in time, and we will deliver you to your parents.
no subject
Her somber musing abruptly cuts off when she hears Justice talk. The girl's afraid, no doubt. Riona smiles and walks up along side of them.]
It looks really close because it's so big, but we have plenty of time. It won't hit for a couple more days, and you'll be far away by then.
no subject
The infant does not seem all that disturbed by the meteor. Instead, it giggles as it mouths its teething rings, then promptly throws them on the ground.
The girl speaks without even opening her eyes,] "She's going to cry later if she doesn't have those."
