the veil is thin . . .

[ On the night of the 16th, the feeling of tension and horrid anticipation comes to a head. Everything stops when the sun goes down-- even the ever-present music in the hoppingest part of the city center. One by one, everyone turns their eyes to the skies. The young and old alike pour out of their houses, some in bare feet, and they point to the velvety blanket of stars.

It takes a second to find it, especially if one is unaccustomed to the starscape. But even a casual observer can see it.

A brightly-shining star, larger than the others, and growing larger.

An announcement cuts across all communication channels that encourages people to evacuate to the space station, but it’s clear that these are just people and they’ll need some help. Supplies, equipment, organization, there’s something for everyone to do.

Civilization is disrupted by a panicked stampede of people vying for limited seats aboard spacefaring craft. Within hours, there will be crushed glass, looting, and chaos.

The clock is ticking. Will you help? Or would you rather watch the dying gasps of a Singing Planet from a safe distance? ]

[Justice is getting the sense that this man is embarrassed, but he doesn't know why. What are they talking about that could in any way be embarrassing?

Mortals are weird.]
Very well. I will warn people before I interrupt their sex in order to save their lives. [Does he sound a little exasperated? Good, because he is.

The people in question are now stumbling out of the tent, clothes on but inside out and mussed entirely.]

[Sex is not really discussed in his time. At least not in public, perhaps at taverns and the like or amongst the soldiers, but not polite company. Which this, John figures, kind of is. Not that he's normally on speaking terms with corpse-guys.]

Thank you. I know it kinda sounds silly when you say it like that, but I'm sure these folks woulda been much less angry with you if you had given 'em some warning.

[It's ridiculous, but Justice has to admit that he does not understand mortal niceties and this man probably does. As weird as it is, it might just be necessary to keep evacuation moving smoothly.

That doesn't mean it's not ridiculous.]
I will never understand mortals. [But he will play by their rules because he wants this to be done well. Speaking of, better lead these flustered love birds towards the shuttles.]

So.....I'm guessin' you're not one, then? [Yeah, yeah, he's leading. But no one said he couldn't hold a conversation while he does that!]

You would be correct. I am a spirit. [A spirit who thinks humanity's hangups about their own procreation are fucking weird.]

.....Oookay, well that's a new one. [John, you're friends with a talking candle. It's not new.] How'd that happen?

What do you mean, how did that happen? [Justice frowns at John, but that's not really a change from his neutral expression. He's generally a frowny person.] I am a spirit. I have always been a spirit, just as you have always been a human.
