the veil is thin . . .

[ On the night of the 16th, the feeling of tension and horrid anticipation comes to a head. Everything stops when the sun goes down-- even the ever-present music in the hoppingest part of the city center. One by one, everyone turns their eyes to the skies. The young and old alike pour out of their houses, some in bare feet, and they point to the velvety blanket of stars.

It takes a second to find it, especially if one is unaccustomed to the starscape. But even a casual observer can see it.

A brightly-shining star, larger than the others, and growing larger.

An announcement cuts across all communication channels that encourages people to evacuate to the space station, but it’s clear that these are just people and they’ll need some help. Supplies, equipment, organization, there’s something for everyone to do.

Civilization is disrupted by a panicked stampede of people vying for limited seats aboard spacefaring craft. Within hours, there will be crushed glass, looting, and chaos.

The clock is ticking. Will you help? Or would you rather watch the dying gasps of a Singing Planet from a safe distance? ]

[Kurt's helping the youngest of the small group of children strap herself in when the text comes. Seeing Remy's name brings a sigh of relief; he hadn't heard anything from his fellow X-Man for days.]

Getting ready to take off with one last group, and then I'm done. Want to meet for drinks and watch the world burn?

Yeah. [About that.] That may have to wait up for awhile. But will certainly owe you that once I get back. [Assuming he got back.]

Hey, mind doing me a favor?

[Kurt frowns at the communicator, his hands flying over the controls as he prepares for lift-off. That particular phrasing settles heavy in his stomach, and he taps out a quick reply with the spade of his tail.]

what is it?

Putting it nicely, saying sorry for me. Truthfully, being my fall man since it seems I won't be getting off this rock. [That may be a lot to drop at once but... well, they were running out of time, and as far as Remy is concerned Kurt is as good as off the planet with those he is looking after and making sure they get to safety.]

Assume her wrath is something I really don't want focused on me.

Good luck with that.

Fuck! [The children behind him flinch at the sudden yell, one of them asking if the shuttle is broken. Kurt shakes his head, mind racing as he tries to calculate if he can get to Remy, how to get to Remy, if he can do that, how to get these children off this doomed rock.

A memory surfaces, and Kurt whirls around to face one of the oldest children (a girl, the oldest sister, nearly grown by her species' standards, very proud of her early acceptance into flight school a planetary year ago.)]
Girl, can you fly this. [Her eyes bug out, and she stammers before managing 'I'm.. pretty sure.' Kurt's out of the pilot's chair the moment she stops speaking, waving for her to come over.] Then come here and tell me for sure. [She bites her lip, but unbuckles herself and, after patting one of her brother's head, scurries over. The tightness in her expression eases slightly when she gets a better look at the control system, and her nod is more confident.] 'It looks like a variation of an asteroid exploration shuttle. My uncle used to fly one, he let me practice in his.'

Good. I have to go back for someone, I'll need you to get this shuttle out of here. [Ignoring her protests ('but what about you?') Kurt grabs his communicator to fire off another text. Hopefully Remy will be too distracted by impending doom to question his request.] Goddamit cajun. Alright, but I need you to do something for me. Take a picture of the area in front of you.

[Well, that was a rather simple price for what he was asking.] I'm making it a selfie. [Still joking around despite the situation because, well, otherwise Remy was going to realize the actual weight of what was happening. It was easier just to pretend nothing was going wrong.

A few moments later Remy does as promised, suppling Kurt with a grinning selfie via the com.]
