[Okay now Cloud’s walking so there is an unflattering angle of his face occasionally as he trucks through the snow to get his own snowboard.] -oh right, I wanted a general opinion on something. What’s, uh, what’s the best birthday gift you ever got? [Specifically a question for girls but he’s afraid he’ll be REALLY obvious if he says that.]

I liked it because it was unique and it was chosen just for me. It was sentimental. [ You're not being subtle here, Cloud. ] If there's something special that the person you're thinking of shared with you then you could look for something relating to it.

Sentimentality seems like a big factor.

No, not a gun! I meant something like a charm with some protective magic, or something like that, not a weapon.

Oh. [so like an accessory] I dunno, could you even get something like that here? Everything's all tech, I haven't seen hardly any magic being used anywhere.

Well, I have magic? There are a few other people, too. I'm sure you could ask.

It has a core with a specific magical ingredient. Mine, for example, has dragon heartstring.

Huh. Dragons back home are just kinda...big ugly mean monsters. They're magic for you guys? Though I guess their scales are good for like armor and stuff...

They're a kind of magical creature, yes, but they're just as big and mean, sometimes. It depends on the situation.

Yes, I'm a witch. It's perfectly normal for some people in my world to be capable of using magic as part of who they are.
