Captain's Log - Sing That Sweet Melody
Who: Jim Kirk & You
Broadcast: Yes
Action: On the Tourist at First and Later on the Iskaulit
When: Jan 4 - Kirk's 32nd Birthday
[ Video ]
[ The transmission has a soundtrack this time - the dulcet tones of The Beastie Boys' Sabotage. A personal favorite of his, evidenced by his head gently bobbing to the 'beats and the shouting' as Jaylah had so fondly referred to it as. Hard to believe that had been years ago now. ]
You know, there are times that I believe that Atroma knows way, way more about us than we think it does. That the whys of ripping us out of our times and our worlds is a lot more purposeful than we might think.
This, for instance.
[ He goes quiet and makes a motion with his hand to indicate the beats and the shouting, or to Kirk, the classical piece playing. ]
I got this as what I can only assume is a combination Christmas and birthday gift. It's nothing but Sabotage remixes. Which, coincidentally, is probably one of the most significant songs in my life. Crashed my first car to the song - which, not surprisingly, lead to my first misdemeanor. I would sing this at the karaoke bars in college, even a bit during Star Fleet Academy on our nights off. And this song helped save the Federation, possibly the universe - also, coincidentally, on my birthday.
[ He goes quiet for a minute, just seeming to listen to the song, though his eyes seem far away. ]
Anyways, if anyone would like to borrow it or get a copy, drop me a line. I'm always happy to share the classics from my world. It really is a great song. Hopefully next time I get a full album and not just the top twenty remixes - though I question the one that uses a piano. I don't recommend that version.
[ A soft sigh and then quieter than before - ]
Two years and thirty-two, huh?
[ End transmission. ]
[ Action - Tourist + Iskaulit/Malum ]
[ His offer made, Kirk would spend a bit more on the Tourist listening to the songs, going down to the freight hangar to blast the music, and probably do a little bit of a workout while he did it. It was the sort of music that made you want to move, after all. He would stop between sets to flip through data on a pad, sometimes making notes, and then going back to his exercise with music that vibrated his bones.
Thankfully he has left the music behind when he goes to the Malum, because, well, it is his birthday, and he has a tradition on his birthday - a good solid drink. Normally he would share it with Bones, get chided about calling his mother, and then they would toast. That was it. No sense in changing the routine now, though he would have to do it without Bones. He thought about inviting Chekov, but, well, he didn't want to bother the other man.
So he could be found later at the Malum, in his reserved seat because even on his birthday he was the official honeypot, sipping something good and from the top shelf. He didn't use his birthday for anything, except a good drink and could you blame him? ]

Re: Action - Tourist
[ He lets her walk all the way over to him with those cupcakes and signing that song. He’s trying not to smile, but his resolve breaks and he grins just a bit when she finally stops in front of him. ]
Putting your Christmas gift to good use?
[ He reaches out for a cupcake, trying to decipher what flavor it might be. ]

[ they're chocolate or whatever facsimile they have ]

[ He chomped into the cupcake, making a mmph noise as the flavor coated his tongue. He chewed for a minute and swallowed, nodding his head. ]
Glad you liked your gift then. And thank you for these. You didn’t have to though, really.
The singing was a nice touch.

Happy birthday? The copyright on that went out a long time ago - it’s been public domain for ages.
So yes, we do have it, but we have a lot of other versions too thanks to being part of the Federation. I know about five other variations all for different cultures and species and their specific celebrations of birthdays.
[ He’ll just take another munch of that cupcake, don’t mind him. ]

We never really sang birthday wishes on Krypton but it was still a special day.

Did you have special rituals or traditions?
[ He hopped up on a box, kicking his feet a little as he ate. ]

[ He smiled gently around his cupcake, a bit of chocolate smeared around his lips. ]
Sounds nice. Did you do anything special when you turned a certain age? Like you know how Latinos have Quinceras?
What was your favorite meal? Cake and ice cream?
[ His tone is teasing, given Kara’s penchant for sweets. ]

And a lot of the milestones were built around academics.
I was pretty young when I left, though.

[ Another bite, licking his lips of the chocolate - or at least whatever she had gotten that tasted like chocolate. ]
Can't remember the last time I had any sort of cake for my birthday, though.

Hmm, it is. Just especially in recent years being on the ship and traveling around, never thought much about having a cake to be honest. It's nostalgic, you know?

Yeah, it is.
[ Another bite, licking his thumb. ]
Thank you, Kara. This was nice.
[ A swallow, sucking his thumb free of icing for a second. ]
You all right on the Goldstone?

[ He looked at her as he finished the last bite of his cupcake, rubbing his fingers free of crumbs. ]
You're welcome back any time, Kara, you know that.
no subject
You're not just saying that because I may have bribed you with cupcakes, are you?
no subject
[ He laughed softly. ]
I mean, they helped.
But I said it from the beginning, you're always welcome here. The ship hasn't been the same without you.

That I can't argue with. Even I am starting to feel the overwhelming testosterone.
[ He paused for a minute, as if thinking, then reached out and took another cupcake. ]
It's my birthday, I'm allowed to cheat.

Sneaky.
[ He wagged a finger at her, but he was smiling as he took another bite. ]
See, I've missed that kind of logic around here. Everyone else is to serious.
