I like the beach. [ It's a simple enough thing that he feels the need to defend. A warm, sandy beach has always been a peaceful place for him. He doesn't feel the need to do anything at all when one is present. ]

It's mostly quiet. Not a lot of people.

Right, so then I would be...making it louder now? [Should he keep moving? Bothering Kara's handsome friend and Natasha's boyfriend probably isn't the best move. But getting to know him better could be good? Maybe?]

Okay, great. [He settles himself down on the sand.] Sooo... I don't know much about you other than you have good taste in friends. [Thinking of Kara and Natasha even if she is more than a friend to him.] So, what do you do back home? Or for fun?

Home is a little complicated. Currently, I'm on the lam and not doing much. Cryostasis will do that.

Reading is something I've come to enjoy here. [ He shrugs. ] Boring, maybe, but I can use boring.

Okay, I like reading, but being on the lam sounds exciting, but less if you're frozen for it. [How do you just move on to reading from that?] How did that happen?

It was my choice. My mind's a dangerous place- or it was. I don't know if what Charles did here will have any impact back home.

[ It's definitely something to think about.. He's not certain. ]

I thought things from here generally didn't go back home with us, but that sounds kind of negative under the circumstances, so I'll just say hopefully? What kind of thing did this Charles person do? [Curious and maybe a little cautious.]

How familiar are you with brainwashing? [ Which is a pretty heavy statement to start with, but here they are. ]

He pauses because it does sound intense, but he can handle that. He just looks more serious than he had.]

I've never had it done to me [would he know if he had though?] or done it to anyone, but I'm familiar with the concept.

[ Bucky closes his book, thumbing at the pages. This is something that is uncomfortable to talk about at the best of times, but it's probably best that someone else knows, right? In case it happens again while he's here.. ]

I've got a history of it. A rather long history of it. It changed who I was. I don't even know who that person was, anymore.

I'm sorry. [He's not sure what to say. It's one thing that this place captured all of them and keeps them from being where they choose to be, but it's another to imagine someone playing with your mind. Well, more than with the augments. He hasn't been too bothered by his because he already understood space travel and security to some degree.]

So are you... Is this how you were before all of it. Is that what Charles did or do you feel like someone different from that too? [He's not sure which person he feels distanced from.]

No, whoever that guy was, he's gone. They saw to that much, at least. All I was to Hydra was a weapon. [ Boy, it's been a while since he's really talked to anyone about his life before the fleet. Once again, Charles had really been that person. ]

I have some memories from before, others are hazy at best. All Charles did was ah-- [ He makes a vague gesture. ]

There were these protocols in place. Buried deep, so that if it came down to it, the programming would come back. He made sure that they couldn't be accessed ever again. Here, at least. The Atroma managed to access them before he did. It... wasn't good.

I could have killed someone.

So, now you're not a weapon, but you're not who you were before either? [Though how could you be that person again completely even if you remembered everything? He doesn't know what everything entails but really just being violated that way would be a big part of it.]

The Atroma are...terrible just like whoever did the brainwashing. I'm glad no one died and that you're safer from it now.

I'm glad, too. So you understand why I don't mind boring. It's better than the alternative.

Boring sounds like a really good place for you to be in now that you mention it.

So, what about the people who did the brainwashing? What happened to them?

Gone, for the most part. Dead or imprisoned, but the thing about an organization like that is that it's hard to get rid of completely. So long as there's one asshole, more will show up.

Steve and Natasha pretty much eradicated the worst of them, I think. I didn't really go looking when shit hit the fan.

[He nods.] I hope that when you go back home things are still boring for you.

[ He laughs, but it doesn't sound particularly genuine. ] Somehow I doubt it, but thanks.

I'm pretty content being here.

Yeah. I can see why. [It's still a lot to process and he's just hearing about it. He can't imagine what it would be like to live.] It definitely makes my life feel more boring by comparison.
