[The Space Bar staff made good use of the ever-replenishing alcohol supply at their last stop, and Nami and Remy got around to discussing the idea of testing various experimental mixes to come up with new additions for the menu. I mean, add to that Nami hasn't made a decision which one of the applicants should take the main bar job, so clearly the best idea is to shove them all into one place and ply them with alcohol while they talk to each other and work it out after that.

No, it's a good idea. Shut up.

I'm not too worried about it. Honestly, just wanted something to do with my free time. She's looking for reliefs too, so - you never know.

[ She leans her elbows on the bar.]

What's the competition look like?

[he does the same, then points out the ones he knows are also vying for the job]

I can't compete with muscle-y guys and gods. Ain't even gonna try.

[ Katara glances over to where he points and... ] Oh, by 'god', do you mean Loki? 'cause... you'd have my vote for bartender over him.

[ No offense, Loki, but you're not the kind of guy who she thinks can really handle a service position. ]

[ Zack, though... yeah. ] ...yeah, he's pretty muscle-y. And he seems friendly.

[ Which... you know... is neither Ben nor Loki's strongest suit. ]

I dunno, he can make bottles float and shit. I can't even read the labels.

[when she spots Zack he gives a nod, then huffs] The worst combination. I can't win against that.

[ Katara is unimpressed with his description of Loki's talents. ] Making bottles float doesn't make the drinks taste any better.

[ ...and he's probably right about that, about not being able to compete with both friendly and muscle-y. If he had one... but, meh. ] Did you really want to do this anyway? Because it would involve being with a lot of strange people, on your feet all day.

I told him that, actually. More or less. [he was impressed for all of five minutes]

I deal with strange people all the time. Remember? PI?

[ She nods at the bit about Loki. ]

I remember. I just didn't get the impression that you enjoyed being around a lot of people at a time. But I guess I could be wrong?

No, you're absolutely right. [he gives a shrug] But sometimes you gotta do shit you don't like.

[ She leans back up and gestures around them. ]

That's true, but this doesn't have to be it. Why did you want this job, anyway?

It was the first job I saw being offered, so I went for it.

[you got to give him credit, he's honest about his stupid decisions]

[And if Katara was being honest, she wasn't all that sad that he might not be getting it. She can't imagine him standing all day being good for his hip, and she never liked it when people made extra work for healers, especially if that healer was her.

As it was... she couldn't help but laugh a little.]

Yeah, I can see that. Maybe you should start up something on your own instead? There might not be much call for a PI, but we're only on the ships for a little while. You can find a job when we get to the planets and pursue something else while we're drifting?

[ Isn't there a hobby you ever wanted to pursue but didn't have the time for? Now's your chance! ]

I'm sort of limited when it comes to skillsets, you know. [he appreciates the thought, but he knows his limits and what he's capable of and it's a very short, specific list] I do plan on finding work when we stop, at least - I'm sure there's something I can find suited to me.

[he's trying to be optimistic]

Well, if you get a job on the planets, [and she's sure he will, there seem to be all kinds] but if you don't have work while you're on the fleet, don't you have plenty of time to expand your skillset?

[With a shrug:] Isn't there anything you'd like to learn, or just... help out with?

Okay, I see your point, and I see where this is going, but. . .

[he doesn't know these things Katara that requires actually using his head for things] I don't know? I like to tinker with shit, but I don't know if that counts as a skill or a necessity.

[ She gives him a bit of a 'why is that a question' look. ]

Why not both? If that's something you feel like you might enjoy doing, you could always ask Sokka to see if you can work in the forge or if he has any ideas of where you could work on stuff.

Katara, what the hell am I going to make in a forge.

[look he thinks the idea of a forge is cool, but what is he going to make, a sword?? The fuck is he going to do with that]

I don't know, whatever you want to make? [She shrugs.] I could use a new knife.

[There, that'd get him started on thinking.] Anyway, you wouldn't have to work there. Just talk to Sokka and see if he knows a place where you can tinker. That way if you decide that's something you want to do, at least you have the information, right?

You just want me to meet your brother, I know what you're up to. [he knows that isn't what she's up to, but he appreciates the the idea]

Fine, maybe I'll check out the forge and annoy your brother until he kicks me out. Or I'll make a fuckin' knife and surprise us all.

[ She blinks, but by the time she puts together what he's saying enough to joke: No, I think you're still too old for him, besides he's interested in the four-armed lady over there, the moment has sadly passed.

So she just slurps, deliberately, on her drink and then gives him a grin. ] I want a blue wrapped handle.

[ All the mischief in the world in her grin. Ha. Your grumpiness is Called Out, sir. ]

I'm gonna make it the most obnoxious color I can find. [now he's just being himself, sorry Katara]

[ That's okay, she still likes him. Anyway, have a smirk. ]

That's okay. If it's sharp, I'm sure it will fetch a good price on some world or another.

[ YUP. ]

[in other words if he actually gets that far he's going to make the best damn knife he can. But like hell is he saying that]

[ Sadly, Katara doesn't know him well enough to get all that, but she does still gather that he's teasing. So she rolls with it. ]

[ Another sip of her drink. Hmm... almost done there. ]

Yeah, it'll blow the competition away.

[he's been long done with his drink at this point, but he may as well while he's here - he reaches over to grab another bottle of the cheapest beer he can reach] —want one, or are you gonna chicken out again?
