Can Any Of Us Even Get Drunk
Who: Space Bar staff and special guests
Broadcast: N/A
Action: Space Bar!
When: One fine night after closing
[The Space Bar staff made good use of the ever-replenishing alcohol supply at their last stop, and Nami and Remy got around to discussing the idea of testing various experimental mixes to come up with new additions for the menu. I mean, add to that Nami hasn't made a decision which one of the applicants should take the main bar job, so clearly the best idea is to shove them all into one place and ply them with alcohol while they talk to each other and work it out after that.
No, it's a good idea. Shut up.
...okay. It may just be a good excuse for a party. Sue her.]
((ooc: this is a mingle! It's open to job applicants and regulars who hold their liquor and their plus ones. If you think that might mean you, you're more than welcome here!))

Then her expression shifts, turns reflective, then sympathetic.]
Things might not stay good forever, but they don't stay bad forever either. Life can be really hard, but as long as we're alive we can work to make it better. [She offers him a brief, sincere smile.] And you don't have to be waiting for things to go wrong to be able to deal with them when they do. You should enjoy the good things, Keith.
[Even if they happen rarely enough, that's all the more reason to be grateful for them and savor them.]

[He tried. There were a lot of good things, too.]
I mean. I try to. I just... I know it won't last. It's only a matter of time before things go wrong again. So... it's just... I know the good things won't last or stay forever, either.

That's true. Things change, and quickly, especially in places like this. And it can be very hard. Trust me, I know what that's like. [A soft heh, before she shakes her head.] So we adapt when it happens. We can't do anything else. But I think it's a lot more important to look for what's good and to try to hold onto it and build on it if we can than to look for the bad thing we know is coming that we can't control, anyway.

Sorry... I don't normally get like this.
[It was probably the alcohol, but he was usually a lot more reserved and tended to keep his issues to himself.]

Still, he doesn't look convinced or all that encouraged, so she's going to try something else.] You know, in my world, there are four nations, and each of us has a story about where life came from. You might say I'm prejudiced, but I like the one I grew up with the best. [She reaches up with one hand and pulls some water from the air, and the drops chase around her fingertips in a slow circle.] In my tribe, we say that all life comes from the water. And because we come from water, just like water can change [the droplets freeze, hovering above her fingertips, suddenly transformed to ice, before they morph into vapor, and then back into water drops, circling above her fingertips again], we can too. And just like water, we can adapt, and deal with what comes next...
[She smiles a bit and then condenses the water drops into a small amount just above her hand. She reaches her hand out towards Keith, extending the water with her hand.] ...it doesn't mean we have to lose ourselves, or what's important to us. Because it doesn't matter what shape water is in, it's still water.

As she finished speaking, he tentatively reached out a finger, poking it slightly to test the surface tension and see just how solid the little bubble-droplet was.]
Yeah. I get it. It's something to think about.
[Keith wasn't easy to convince of things, but he wasn't going to dismiss someone's thoughts outright. He'd listen and consider in his own time.]

[Then she leans in, a little conspiratorially.] So what do you think? Should I make Zack sweat it out and pretend to go for the bartending job too?
[Since Buffy had always said that she was glad Katara had never gone into bartending...]
no subject
Why not? If it means better drinks by way of proxy... [He shrugged.] Isn't that kind of like bidding on an auction with the only goal being to raise the price?
no subject
Except without it costing anyone anything.
[ Something snags her attention beyond Keith's shoulder and then she shook her head. ] But I wouldn't want Nami to think I was actually applying. I'd better get going, anyway.

Uh, sure. Okay. Have fun.
no subject
You too.
