I would think that is self-explanatory.

[ Loki rubs circles in his palms, feeling an old phantom itch. ]

Tricksters are chaotic beings, both in story and in reality. They are not trusted and not liked. While that can inspire a certain degree of wariness, the running theme is that tricksters always get what they deserve. Playing tricks, cheating — there is no reward in life or myth for those.

Mortals appreciate tricksters. [Even when they're annoying fucks, because humans are strange things that value rebelliousness and freedom and laughter above all else.] Some of the first tribes of men worshiped tricksters as guardians of the sacred, as heroes, as gatekeepers to knowledge and creation. Anansi, the Coyote, Nanabozho...

I do not recall that. But I enjoyed their stories in the past. They had an ear for the fanciful.

What happened? [Since something, or maybe some things had to have happened to make Loki believe so strongly that trickers are destined for failure and pain. And since Cas has been pretty accommodating in answering...most questions, he thinks it's fair for him to pose a couple in return.

Nevermind that the ones he poses are probably way more personal. WHATEVER.]

Nothing happened. Asgard simply had a dim view on anyone who didn't pummel their enemies to death.

[ Loki frowns. A few months ago, Loki would have said yes. Asgard never loved him. Never cared for his talents. He had to engineer his own life story for him to be remembered with any kind of fond nostalgia.

But he thinks of Hela. A sister he never knew, barely spoke to. Her history outlined in blood with no way out. ]

I was a shadow. It made seeing things in the light . . . difficult.

[Calling yourself a shadow trying to look into the light is like, parallel to being an outcast dude. Luckily Cas is just as extra, so he absorbs all that dramatic explanation with every ounce of seriousness he can muster.]

The light tends to be overrated, in my experience.
