( Jean isn't a stranger to space. She isn't a stranger to time travel. She is a stranger to this particular space ship, though, and she's not really sure why she's here or how she got here. It's a pain in the ass, really, considering she just got back from space not even two weeks ago and here she is again, trapped in the limbo of endless black and stars close enough to touch. She'd started on a ship with limited capacity and basically no people and at least she's actually on a ship with people now. It's an improvement - somewhat.

Great. Just peachy.

Maybe this time they can skip the Invasion of the Symbiotes and she'll get to keep control of her own body and mind. It'd be nice, for once, not to have to worry about some alien entity invading her body for the fun of it. )

So, uh, question? What sector of space are we in, exactly? Because I just got back from a stint on Klyntar and let me tell you, it wasn't great. I don't want to go back. So if we're anywhere remotely close by (read: within one million lightyears), I'd like to go ahead and nope out now.

( Maybe this isn't the best way to introduce herself to an entire space fleet but, hey, Jean has never been one to beat around the bush. Being a telepath, she has an idea of how people's brains work and it's given her the overarching sense that she needs to just shoot straight ninety nine percent of the time. What's the point in subtlety? Say what you think, be bold, no regrets. It keeps people from misinterpreting your motives, anyway. )

Anyone got ideas on how I can get back to Earth from here? I don't want it to seem like it's less important than the former, because really, if I'm not anywhere near Klyntar I'm good, but I kind of have a team I need to get back to. I'm Jean Grey and I'm captain of the X-Men.

Hey. You're not going to have a lot of luck with answers, but I think someone else said something about X-Men, so maybe some of your team is here. And for what it's worth I've never heard of anywhere called Klyntar. Not that space is my specialty.

( Well, there was good news and bad news - the good, hey! Mutants were here! Probably mutants who didn't want to kill her. Bad news? Nobody knew what she was talking about. Jean thought she could handle that combination. )

I guess it could be worse and you'd wonder why in the heck a telepath wound up in the middle of space. If the X-Men are here, or some of them, at least they'll know what to do with me.

( Jean waves back to the woman on the screen. )

Hey, I try to be a good telepath. I can manage not to eavesdrop unless someone is just screaming and usually, by that point, they want someone to hear them.

How many bad telepaths have you met?

Does the giant gorilla count?

Gorilla? This I have to hear.

[ she talks about it lightly; a party story that is totally normal to her. ]

Gorilla Grodd. Telepathic silverback, and not a fan of humanity. I'm not sure how much there is to tell. Last time I saw him we were trying to get him back to his original timeline from the Vietnam war.

( A telepathic gorilla from the 60s? Hmm. Sounds like one hell of a mistake on someone's part. )

Any success? Because that doesn't sound like a good time for anyone.

Yeah. We got him back to the time he belongs in and we got the heck out of dodge.

Don't blame you, I would have too. So, uh, are you a time traveller then? Is that your power?

[sassy_assassin]

I don't have any powers. But yeah, I'm the captain of a time ship. There's a surprising number of people who can also travel through time and want to mess it all up.

Yeah, funny how that works. People want to go and change the past and don't think about what it does to the future, you know?

[sassy_assassin]

Or they do, and it's a much bigger problem.

Time was explained to me as a circle. What goes around comes around. Is that how it was explained to you?

[sassy_assassin]

Not really, no. Not in a literal sense. It's very delicately linear— change the slightest thing and it takes another path. But certain things are always constant. Time wants to happen.

Huh. I didn't...I haven't really studied time, necessarily. I got brought to the future without being consulted about it.

[sassy_assassin]

How'd that go?

About as well as you'd expect, which is five teenagers in the future hoping they don't run into their older counterparts and screw anything up.

Sounds like a mess.

Huge one. ( a quick pause. ) Did you leave a mess behind when you time travelled?

[sassy_assassin]

I think our slogan was, "we screw things up for the better."

So, yeah. But we try to fix it, too.

[ashandflame]

Screwing things up for the better sometimes is all you can do. It's kind of a relief to know I'm not the only person with a weird relationship with time, though.

[sassy_assassin]

I get the feeling that a lot of people have a weird relationship with a lot of things here.

[ashandflame]

It would be too much to ask for some simplicity, huh?

No, but I don't do bored well.
