I didn't know.

[What a thought. What a nice, simple thought.] I want to hear about it. You hungry?

[She's starved.]

[ He chuckled. ]

Is the winner buying? Or am I buying for the winner?

[ So the answer is yes. He turned to start walking back down towards the town, trying to think if he passed a good place for them to sit and eat on the way up. ]

Winner buying. You can get the next one.

[She did just earn some money for a winning game.]

What kind of farm was it? Animals, crops?
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-07-12 05:33 am (UTC)(link)

Crops - mostly wheat, but we rotated every other year to corn to keep the soil from being stripped dry. Usually had a pretty good year. There were a few lean ones, but that's farm life.

[personal profile] kill_switch 2018-07-14 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
How lean did it get, and - how many people depended on it? [She's curious. She's worked on a few farms in her time here on the Fleet, but they were distinctly different experiences than the hanging gardens on the Citadel, or what hazy memories she had of grown foodstuffs in the Green Place.]

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-07-15 01:31 am (UTC)(link)

I don't really know for sure. We weren't the only farmers in the area, and we usually sold to a bigger companies either for use in their own products or distribution. Most people in my time don't use raw wheat themselves. Some of it might have gone off planet too. Lean just meant we didn't make as much money that year, usually from an unexpected drought.

[ It had been a long time since he'd talked of his childhood at this kind of length. It wasn't that he particularly hated it or anything like that, but it wasn't the highlight of his years either. At least not to him. ]

kill_switch: (pic#10211258)

[personal profile] kill_switch 2018-07-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
So even if you have a lean year, you can still feed everyone?

[The concept - that a bad crop would boil down to nothing more than less money - was only something she'd experienced here.]
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-07-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)

Absolutely. Things like bread might go up a bit in cost, but companies can supplement a bad year in the US with crop from other countries. Feeding everyone is a global effort, not just our one small farming community. If things got very bad we could call for help from other Federation Planets to further supplement, but it’s never been that bad.

[She looks at him with a greater sense of curiosity. The idea that three little oasis could never come to such agreements for the sake of all its participants in the face of Kirk's mention of entire planets pitching in - she finds herself hoping for it, that her dying world can find one iota of that altruism.]

Your worlds would do that for each other?
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-07-17 02:35 am (UTC)(link)

It's part of what makes it Alliance. An agreement to aid each other in times of need. When you enter the Alliance, that's what you sign up for. When we all work together, strive together, we thrive together. I won't say there's no imbalance. There is - some planets have more economic and military power than others, some have bigger populations, etc. There's not true equality, but there is, at least, a cooperation.

[ He glanced at her, realizing how outlandish all of it must sound coming out of his mouth. These things he took as a given, as simply understood and natural in his world, weren't in hers. Sometimes it was an easy thing to forget. ]

[personal profile] kill_switch 2018-07-26 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's a lot to take in, but it's not something she feels bitter about. She knows her world will never follow suit, even if it does continue to get better. She's hopeful that, at least somewhere, it has. That is exists at all. She smiles slightly.]

It must be something.

[But before they cand continue to wax poetic, she finds a suitable restaurant - something aromatically punctuated by pungent soups and warm breads. She nods her head at the entrance.] How about here?

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-07-27 04:32 am (UTC)(link)

[ Kirk sees her smiling, however small, and he wonders if he should try and give her even a smattering of hope. She hadn't spoken to him much about her own world, but he had a feeling it wasn't all that pleasant, just from her general demeanor. He turns his head instead though, appraising the shop and nodding. ]

Smells good, and what's the point of coming to new planets if you can't try new foods, right?

[personal profile] kill_switch 2018-07-29 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
[She opens the door and heads inside, holding it for him to follow.]

One of my favorite parts.

[Feel free to ask. She may not answer everything but after three years in the Fleet and their growing friendship, she's learning to open up.]

[ He at least keeps his questions to himself as they order their food and drinks and go to find a place to sit. He was glad to get off his feet, personally, and be somewhere quieter than the bustle of the arena. He sipped from his cup, watching Furiosa for a moment. ]

Just from your reactions, I have the idea that working together it's a common theme in your world?

kill_switch: (pic#10176420)

[personal profile] kill_switch 2018-07-29 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[She chews thoughtfully as she listens, taking in his question, and gives a wry little chuckle before answering.]

No, not in the slightest. There were trade agreements with Gas Town and Bullet Farm, but that was mostly to benefit those in charge. Steep hierarchy, tyrant at the top. Out in the Wastelands you'd have bandits and Buzzards, all fighting for resources.

[She takes a drink.] No one wants to share in a world like that.
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-08-04 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)

[ Gas Town. Bullet Farm. Not pleasant names. Places with names like that didn't bode well in their general outcomes. Humans were like, he found. Names had power, feeling. ]

So what is it you do in a world like that?

kill_switch: (pic#10176420)

[personal profile] kill_switch 2018-08-08 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Survive.

Specifically, I was Imperator, something like a general. Raiding parties, order around WarBoys, drive the WarRig for supply runs ... [He's getting a lot of information, but there's a lot she's leaving out still.]

Does your world even have a military, if everyone works alongside each other like you say?
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-08-08 01:43 am (UTC)(link)

[ Ah, that was a question, wasn't it? ]

Individual planets do, yes. Star Fleet itself is para-military, our ships outfitted to defend. Star Fleet itself isn't a full military as you might understand it.

[ He sipped his drink. ]

It's true my world cooperates and we work together. But that's the Federation. There are plenty of people, within the Federation, and without, that are not so eager to cooperate. Star Fleet isn't stupid - space is vast, and holds many dangers, including ones already knocking at our door that we already beat back once, and at great cost. The Klingon Empire comes to mind. We prepare for it, but we do not go seeking war, either.

kill_switch: (pic#10138166)

[personal profile] kill_switch 2018-08-08 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I guess nothing can be expected to be a complete utopia.

A defensive approach. [She nods, picking her drink up.] I can get behind this.

So what kind of threat did you have to deal with? [Beat it back once at great cost sounded like it had the potential to be pretty intense, considering the fact that they were dealing with multiple planets.]
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-08-08 03:28 am (UTC)(link)

Do you mean me personally, or through Star Fleet, and in my case, Earth's history?

kill_switch: (pic#10176420)

[personal profile] kill_switch 2018-08-09 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[She considers the question a moment.] Let's start big; Earth? Your Earth?
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2018-08-12 04:32 am (UTC)(link)

Well - if we're talking external attackers, that would be the Klingon Empire. We were still fairly new to space travel at that point, at least on the level of being able to communicate with other alien races and travel with any meaningful speed. The Klingon Empire decided it wanted to claim us as one of its planets, and we fought back. It cost many lives, and many years, but we did it. At the last minute, cornered, we drove them back, and established the borders of the Federation and the Empire.

[She listens, fascinated. She's got an idea at this poinnt what space-faring battle would look like, but still on a much smaller scale than what he's alluding too.]

Were you around for that, or was it before your time?
