[Colour him surprised- he hadn't expected her waif-like appearance to make an impression as a bodyguard, but it's true that looks can be deceiving and Mikumo is more than capable enough for this. He nods; guess this is his fate, now.]

Many of the foes we're likely to face here will attack from a distance. Are you armed?

[Mikumo might be willowy and pretty like any idol, but she's able to handle herself when given a chance.

It's part of why she was always so ready to ditch Mirage. She doesn't need a babysitter and she can do better sneaking around without the pilot with her.]

I didn't really think I would be doing anything like this when I left my ship, but I did grab one of the guns from the security locker. I suppose it will have to do.

I suppose it's a good thing that Lady M saw fit to give me some combat training as well.

[She's had to fight in battle, sure, but nothing like Messer or Kaname. As it is, she can hold her own fairly well.

His apology catches her by surprise and she raises her eyebrows before waving it off.]

Mm. So I've heard.

[And he could probably ask a dozen questions or more, because what Kaname's told him is pretty wild, but if their roles were reversed he'd hate anyone prying. Hell, he's had plenty of his own secrets kept hidden for a long time now, and she'd been included in the list of people he didn't tell. Asking anything would be hypocritical. Kaname gave him the facts he needed to know, that's enough.]

[Mikumo is not as surly as Messer and she figures that it's not actually a secret anymore, so why should she keep the answers to herself.

Although, she knows he won't ask her. He'll ask Kaname first.]

I trust you. Stand where you like- if they've hired you, we're equals in this job.

[Which means no orders in either direction. Not that orders ever really mean that much to Mikumo to begin with; she follows her own drumbeat. It would be more annoying if she wasn't 1) effective and 2) mindful of the actual mission goals. She's trustworthy in that sense, at least.]

I suppose that means I'm better off than others in our acquaintance.

[But she's not, because she knows that Messer grew to trust even Hayate. Mostly.

And since he won't nag her, Mikumo is more than willing to stick with him as her partner for this job.]

Why haven't you transferred to the same ship as Kaname?

That's a shame. Maybe you've angered some of our kidnappers with your hair.

[The hell does that even mean? His eyes narrow a little, and he glances away, ignoring the barb. He's annoyed enough about the situation as it is.]

[She notices his reaction and shakes her head. He's annoyed but he isn't going to respond. He always was one hard to get to react.]

Still, the fact that you can't just transfer does seem strange. Perhaps I should look into it for you.

Do as you please. You might find them less interested in hearing grievances than you think.

[The ones who make themselves available to speak with tend to offer very little when it comes to useful answers.]

Then that would make it different from what we know already how?

[As if NUNS gave a crap about anyone but their own agenda in the first place? Xaos was a bit better, what with Lady M wanted to make sure that the Globular system wasn't sacrificed for their greed.]

I'm sure that they'd at least give us some completely unsatisfactory excuse as to why they don't care about our grievances.

Hence why it's pointless. You'll only give them what they want.

Maybe what they need is some appeasement. A little ego stroking.

[Not that Messer would ever do that. But, you know, Mikumo is good at faking quite a bit so long as she gets to sing.]

How do you propose to do that?

[She's clearly proven herself better at mocking people than befriending them.]

[Excuse you, she can always be charming when it suits her. Messer, however, knows who she is. What's the point in being too kind right away just because he died.]

I'll definitely have to think it over. I've seen that they do respond to queries from those they kidnap from time to time. It's not unheard of.

No, it isn't. But I've also heard that the usefulness of their responses is limited at best.

[The sort of villains who sound like they talk in tildes don't inspire much confidence.]
