[ New people are... well, he's willing to trust Carl's judgment. He just is. Not so long ago he thought-- recruiting, finding folks, it was the way to go. Now? It's not safe, trusting unknown quantities.

He just hums, thoughtful. ]

[ He knows, they can't trust many, but really, the guy was just scavenging for food, and he'd been unarmed. It could have been a trap, but Carl has to have faith that there are still good people around. ]

He's a doctor. [ Offhandedly. ]

[ Maybe someday he'll be less blinded by rage, by the ugly memory of betrayal, by his time in the pit and how close he came (too close, though not close at all,) to giving up and giving in.

Not today, but he's not gonna argue. ]

[ That's what he figured, yeah. Daryl doesn't answer, just half-smiles, shallow and wry. Carl's always been a good kid. What's gonna get them in the end is, they keep losing the best of them. ]

[ Hey, at least they gained another good one this time, right? Someone who can help Maggie with her pregnancy. Carl knows he made the right choice. With all the lives he's taken, maybe this helps make up for it. ]

[ Somehow that doesn't seem like a fair trade, not by a long shot.

He can't even start thinking about what this means for them, for Rick. ]

[ Carl offers a shrug. ]

Not like it's going to destroy my liver.

[ His dad has Judith and Michonne, he'll be okay. It'll hurt for a while, but he'll be okay. ]

[ That's definitely not funny yet. Probably not ever.

To fill the awkward quiet he goes to grab them both another drink. It's about the best idea he's got. ]

[ He can laugh or he can cry, and he hasn't cried since his mom died, he's really trying not to.. but fuck. While Daryl is gone, he rubs at his face to gather himself together a little better. He feels a little fuzzy, but it's a feeling he kind of wants to chase. ]

[ This is a really shitty way to cope, but it's about the best he could come up with.

At least he's got enough sense not to get them a bottle of whiskey, though whether that restraint will last remains to be seen. Getting lit and being miserable go together so well.

He just slides the beer across the table when he gets back, sitting down. ]

There's a lot to be sorry about. [ Oh, there's the depression about it.. He tries to keep a straight face through it, but really, it ends up in a grimace. Carl drinks from his glass to act as a distraction from it. ]

[ He just grunts, disagreeing wordlessly. But... well, this is the kinda thing drinking silently is made for, right? ]

[ Carl is definitely starting to learn that lesson. He can understand why people turn to drinking, now. It's distracting. He's having trouble pushing past the taste, but if it can make his head foggy? Worth it. ]
