[Remy had been rather lax in regards to interacting with Makie (which was entirely his own fault), he has interacted with her but she seemed like the type who needed space and he was willing to let her have it. Even more so when she is cleaning blood off a weapon...

Pausing at the entrance of the cargo bay to assess the situation, he continued in to search through their storage.] Bonjour Makie, seems ya been havin' an 'nterestin' day.

[He's picked her right on that regard. Makie is a solitary type, though she slowly thaws over time.

It's only traces of blood by now, of course; she's just meticulous at looking after her stuff. At the bonjour she looks up, blinking slowly at Remy as she processes his unfamiliar words.]

Not particularly. [An immortal gave her sass while asking her for sword practice. Inevitable things happened!] May I ask what bonjour means?

[Hopefully it was Loki...

And that also gave pause for Remy. Did... she often go around stabbing people or whatever she did to have to clean up her weapon like that? Huh.]

Oh, ah, it means 'hello' in French.

[Ironically Makie and Loki do have some bad blood between them. But this Loki doesn't remember.

If it helps, she doesn't stab people much at all anymore. But it doesn't really count for her as interesting, by her definition.]

Ah. Hello, then. Is that... [Hmm. She's not that familiar with other languages except a little Dutch.] European?

Oui, ah, yes, it be. [He can't help it, really, it was just too ingrained in the way he spoke.] Though I think 'nyone from France would consider it a bastardization of their language, since it more an offshoot of it.

[She'll get used to it. She's a quick study. And ah, French. All right, then.]

I see. If you did not learn it from France, where did you? If you don't mind my asking. [She's curious.]

Not at all, chere. 'm from a place in the United States called New Orleans, it was settled by the French 'while back now, 'nd the language just lingered 'round 'nd mixed in with the changin' culture there.

That makes sense. [A lot of older words and pieces of dialect filter through her own land in such a fashion. United States means he comes from the same place Sam does, but she's certainly never heard Sam talk like that. It must be quite a large place.]

I didn't have much exposure to other languages in my own time. It has an interesting cadence to it. Do you know the full language, or just portions?

I more or less know the full language, bar maybe a few pieces that really don't make it 'nto everyday conversation, or semi regular ones. Sure there be a bunch of words which be related to topics I never even think to talk 'bout, or line up with m' line of work or lifestyle.

Guess just be a bonus of bein' brought up speakin' both languages, done some travellin' but only know a handful of words from other languages. Normally just 'nough to get by.

Well, you are far more educated than I. Before I came here, I only knew my native language.

[Of course, now they all speak the same thing. Somehow.]

Ahh, I don't think that. We all got our own set of skills 'nd knowledge, cherie, some more useful then others. I don't think 'll be meetin' up with too many French speakers out here in space, hein? Be a lot more thing that be more helpful in our current situation than a language from Earth, which we don't even really need considerin' the augments. [Those were very handy, things would be a lot more confusing without their aid.]

Still, to learn more than one language takes a fair amount of intelligence. What was it you did before you came here?

[And that was always a risky question to answer, most had been ok with it so far, but you never know who wouldn't be. Especially with sharing a ship.] I was a thief.

Though, that was kinda put to a stop once I got here. [He still did now and then on planets, especially if he could get the gear to work with and a decent job or two to do. Couldn't let skills get too rusty.]

[The look she turns on him isn't judgmental. It's kind of curious.]

There's a certain honesty in claiming you're a thief. [She's wondering if he was forced into the role or, y'know, he just found it fun and/or a shortcut.] There are worse professions.

[There's an initial shrug of a shoulder to answer that, before backing it up with words.] It a risk, not all take kindly to bein' 'round a thief, but since things haven't gone missin' on the ship or 'round where I been, I do hope most don't mind it. That 'nd, well, [Truthfully, now he thought about it.] There ain't really a place for it here, 'nd I got plenty to keep me occupied.

I don't believe you are the only self-professed thief on board the Fleet. [Dryly.]

It certainly doesn't concern me. I'm sure you have your reasons.

Well, a lot of worlds out there, sure there be a few of us 'round. [And in lots of different forms. Hell, his boss was a real to life pirate and... that was kind of cool. You know, without the scurvy and all that.

Remy did offer her a smile,] Kind of ya, cherie. [Before feeling the need to almost offer something back for that comment of hers.] Ya know, if ya wanna, am sure I can teach ya French if ya 'nterested.

[Makie...actually gives that serious thought. It's attractive, the idea of new things when you're so adrift.]

Is it very difficult to learn?

No more than 'ny other language, I guess. Can sometimes pick up some similarities between it 'nd English, so able to guess a few words here 'nd there. [Though that was assuming Makie was speaking English and not being translated from some other language by their augments.] Like everything, just takes some practice, 'nd hey, not like we don't got plenty of time, hein?

I don't know English, either. [Sorry, man. Though it's kind of fascinating that the auto-translation doesn't seem to stretch to his peppered French. She's noticed that with other people.]

But if you have the time, it might be nice.

[This is a woman who has difficulty filling all her time.]

[He knows that feeling, even with making up a normal routine, Remy just had too much energy to burn. And if he didn't keep busy he would just turn into a real pain to be around, annoying everyone out of boredom and no doubt would end up doing something really stupid.] I think can put some time aside. Plus, hear it lot easier to learn languages from a person than a book or 'nything, 'cause that way ya get to actually practice usin' it.

An actual teacher has always been more effective than studying, especially when it comes to things like this. [She smiles.]

Thank you... [Um. Hrm.] Mr Remy.

[Ok, polite, but no.] Remy, just Remy is fine. Don't need to do formal or 'nything.

Hey, why don't we make it for the afternoons, can bring snacks back from when 'm doing lunch shifts at the bar that way. [Hey, learning with drinks and snacks, much better than without.]

Remy. [She'll forget a few times, but Makie will get the hang of it eventually.]

And that sounds lovely. I'll look forward to it.

How 'bout we make it for tomorrow then? [It would give him some time to work out where to get started and how to teach another person something that was second nature to him.] I can come find ya once I get back from work.
