[Makie runs into Wanda in the hallway as she leaves her room, shamisen tucked under one arm, and her brow furrows a little at the sight of an unfamiliar woman. Then she gives a small bow.]

Hello. You're... new? Or visiting?

[She's not so good with checking the roster.]

[That's an interesting-looking instrument. Something from Earth, she thinks, just something Wanda's never seen before.]

Transferred. [So new but not...brand new.] I'm Wanda.

[It's not commonly seen outside of Japan.]

Hello, Wanda. I'm Makie. [Her full name is a mouthful, so for crew it's just the short version.] I'm not very good with technology, but if I can help you with anything else, please let me know.

[Kitty will be pleased. She was complaining there was a lack of women for a while.]

[Try being the only woman on a ship. Not fun. But it's nice to see that the Twin Roses is better balanced.]

You are a musician too? Where did you find that?

[Yeah, the lack of balance tends to be a thing out here.]

The shamisen...? [She glances down at it, and her smile is wistful.] I had this one made by some craftsmen a long time ago, now, for a friend. But she's since left the Fleet. Do you play an instrument?

It's pretty.

[Well, all instruments made with care are, and it's clear Makie loves this one very much.]

I had a guitar at home. Maybe I can find one on one of the planets someday. [Of course one of the few hobbies she does have requires a thing that is far away in another reality.]

I would hope so. We've had a few guitar players on Fleet before, I think. You could try asking to see if any of our previous passengers left one behind...?

[She's always happy to meet another musician.]

I wouldn't want to take someone's guitar...

[Though theoretically, it's possible that she had a guitar last time and it's still out there somewhere. Vision's fish and plants didn't disappear.]

How often do people come back?

[Hmm. She pauses for a moment. That's a good question.]

It's not...common. But nor is it so rare as to be unheard of. I would say for every dozen people that leave, we might have one return. Sometimes they remember this place.

[Sometimes they don't.]

I don't, but I wish I could. It sounds like I've forgotten a lot. Like the planet the fish in the cargo hold came from.
