[The feed turns on to Kaname moving around her personnel office. A moment later, she grabs the comm and settles on the couch.]

Recent circumstances have me wondering, have the positions of captain and first mate come into play often here? I'm sure there have been circumstances before my arrival, so I'd like to hear about them.

[She sits back, thinking aloud.]

I think part of it is that the roles are very involved and crucial on the ships back home with several tiers of command. I knew my role and the roles of those around me as well as I could. [She smiles.] Not that the set up here isn't relaxing.

Sometimes I just think about the differences and how it would affect life here if it was more like that. [Sitting forward again, Kaname turns a little.] Maybe it wo--

[The sentence is cut off with a yell of surprise from her. Dropping to the floor with a clack, the comm spins, camera eventually stopping and focusing on what made her yell in the first place.]

You doubt my commitment to exercise? [He tries to look hurt, but smiling sort of ruins it.] I like to run on planets, where there is somewhere to run to. Going nowhere in circles on this ship is too representative of existence in the Fleet to be fun.

I said no such thing. [Kaname doesn't even try to look offended, it would be a wasted attempt.]

See, you say that, but I like the repetition. Makes it more routine and normal. It gives you more time to think if you need it.

What do you think about while running in circles? Being trapped? The futility of our situation?

[He's joking, clearly, but also... no, he's not really joking.]

[Kaname reaches over and lightly whacks his arm with a wry smile.]

What I plan to do during the day, how I can use my time, more practical and useful things like that. Sometimes how to deal with strange Russian friends.

[Yeah, he deserved that. There's no attempt to retaliate.]

Ah, practical things. Strange Russians are difficult to deal with sometimes. [He frowns, suddenly concerned.] Am I difficult? I don't mean to be.

Not particularly, but even if you were, it's all right. You're you, and that would make it worth dealing with.

[Kaname's very assured in her words, shrugging with ease at his question.]

Why do you ask?

Thank you. [He means it--that's extremely reassuring.

He's also not eager to get all sincere and in-his-feelings in the middle of the Iskaulit, so he mirrors her shrug.]

I haven't known you long enough to start being difficult. That takes four, five months of friendship. At least. [Deflected! Smooth.]

[axi]

[She can't help her grin. Kaname looks at him curiously.]

We're at what, over three months now? What does that get me?

[candothat]

Me at my most well-behaved. [Because he's such a hellion once you get to know him, really.] Isn't that enough?

Not at all. That just makes me feel like a friendly acquaintance at this point.

[She's not entirely joking or serious, but the words are pretty true.]

I was going to get something to eat. If you're close to being finished, do you want to join me?

[candothat]

[He frowns a bit at that. Making people feel like he's keeping them at a safe distance isn't his intention.

You know, even though that's exactly what he's been doing.]

I can always be finished for the sake of food. Where were you going to go?

[Deal with it. The acceptance of her invitation has Kaname smiling again.]

Space Bar. It's a little early for drinks, but they've got nonalcoholic stuff, too. My treat this time.

There is a saying on Earth--"it's always happy hour somewhere"? [He's messing around, he's not nearly depressed enough to start drinking this early.] That's kind of you, thank you.

[axi]

If you'd like to make it happy hour, I'll gladly give you a shuttle ride back to your ship if need be.

[And she would! Kaname nods off towards the other side of the Iskaulit.]

We can head there now if you don't mind staying sweaty for a little longer. Or we could meet back here after showering.

[She's been here long enough to not worry about being sweaty after a workout and hanging with a friend.]

I appreciate that, but I'll try to stay sober.

[No one needs drunk Pavel. Drunk Pavel likes to cry and snuggle--preferably at the same time--and now is not the time for that.]

I don't mind if you aren't offended by me.

[He's not in an offensive condition, it's fine. She caught him before exercising started in earnest.]

[She can't help laughing, but nods in understanding.] I'll keep an eye out just in case it comes to that.

[Kaname shakes her head, still smiling.]

Same for me. I think we're all right, though, don't you?

[candothat]

It won't. This would be a sad time of day to be drunk.

[He gives them both a once-over.]

I think that we're good enough to not have Nami to ask us to leave.

[axi]

[She lets that go, as much as she might agree. His next statement gets a laugh and a nod.]

Glad we're on the same page. Plus, I don't think her shift's started yet. Come on.

[And Kaname goes to lead the way.]

In that case, we may be in trouble. [He does not think that they may be in trouble.] I don't know the standards of the others who work at the Space Bar quite so well.

[Kaname looks back and winks.]

Don't worry. I'm her first mate now, I'm sure we can escape any trouble that might befall us.

[It's not a long trip to the Space Bar, and when they get there, it's basically deserted. Good.]

[candothat]

[What, no big midday crowd? Pavel picks out a pair of seats at the bar.]

I think that the odds of us being asked to leave and come back only after we've showered are very, very small.

[axi]

Agreed.

[Wow, Pavel, going right for the bar. How bold.

Kaname slides on to the seat next to him.]

So what's going on in your world?

[candothat]

[The bar stools are tall! He likes being tall!]

Eh... the captain is a teenager, another crewmate is in a coma, and I'm being offered daily opportunities to ruin a friendship with stupidity. [A shrug.] So nothing unusual, not for the fleet.

[axi]

That's still a lot at once.

[Kaname slides a small bowl of pretzels and other assorted bar snacks over.]

Are you doing all right?

There are many people who have it much worse. I can't complain.

[Best not to add 'whiny' to his list of undesirable attributes, right? He helps himself to a handful of generic bar snack and opts for a topic change.]
