While it wasn't broadcasted, between how many people were told and the fact it wasn't exactly a private affair on a very public beach, anyone was welcome to come to this little shindig. Kirk's feelings were mostly that they all could use a break and a chance to relax together as friends, family, teammates, or any other word you chose to assign to the relationships you had on the Fleet. It was a nice break from working in projects too. It was nice to have something to occupy yourself in a creative and useful way, but it was always a good idea to take a break and refresh the brain now and then.

Which was how he came to the idea of a party on Alloy Lake.

He scouted a scrap of land near the water to set up on - beach towels, a cooler with drinks, a mocked up grill to cook some food. He went out later in the afternoon to start with more than enough light to enjoy some swimming, though it would be dark soon enough for certain members to join without being uncomfortable. At which point, a bonfire was built. What? A lack of sunlight is never a reason to stop partying! Especially not with such good company.

[ Han isn't sure he's really in the party mood, but he's going to show up anyway, because what else is he gonna do? It's a planet full of garbage, it's literally a garbage system.

Digging through the trash isn't exactly an appealing pastime, even if it's useful.

He shows up when things are already in full swing, fully dressed and definitely not planning on changing that, there's no way he's going to swim here. ]

Please tell me the drinks didn't come from one of these heaps?

[The garbage system isn't glamorous, but it's been an incredible place for projects... and an incredible distraction from unpleasant thoughts and circumstances. Pavel only takes a break for socialization because Kirk is spearheading the party and he feels obligated to attend.

Since not-swimming is his pastime of choice, he ends up in Han's vicinity.]

Only some of them. Wine ages very well on dumpster planets, you know.

[ Touché, Chekov. He hadn't thought about it like that... but some of the crummiest, roughest planets in the Outer Rim make the hardest booze.

You always feel a little gross drinking it, though. ]

Okay, but I'm watching to make sure no one's poisoned before I try it.

[Rough conditions make for hard booze, man. Pavel would know, he is Russian.

He interprets this as an invitation to take the nearest alcoholic drink, which he lifts to Han in a one-sided sort of toast.]

If I die, know that I did so doing what I love.

[He drinks and, to no one's surprise, fails to die immediately.]

[ To Han's slight surprise, maybe. Except there's no reason to assume that drink is actually a garbage drink. IN FAIRNESS. ]

Well, I guess there's worse ways to go,

[ he shrugs, reaching for one of his own, which is similarly non-lethal. Hooray. ]

[What, should he be sampling all of the drinks just to make sure he gets to all of the garbage ones? ...He would probably do that, don't suggest it.]

It seems that we aren't escaping this party so easily.

[Kidding. While he isn't a huge party guy and occasionally enjoys some melodrama, death-by-poison would be a bit much.]

[ well, really, what else are you going to do on a garbage planet? ]

I guess the only thing to do is keep drinking.

[ MOSTLY he's kidding... not that he's not game to knock back a few, but getting roaring drunk is never actually as much fun as it sounds theoretically. ]

This system isn't unfriendly. Nothing is making any great effort to kill us.

But I will take any excuse to drink. [And he punctuates that by sampling another possibly-trash beverage, which also doesn't kill him. Huh.]

[ Without his own, beautiful, perfect ship, Han's heart is just not in the scavenging. Sure, some of this would probably be useful armor plating for the Caprine, maybe they could add a little juice to the engines, but it's not like it'll get them anywhere. ]

I feel like there are way too many systems where people are trying to kill us around here. Everyone seems too used to the idea.

[Not with that attitude, it won't.]

I find that it's better to accept and expect such things. That way, systems that are not actively hostile are pleasant surprises.

Fair enough.

[ he... can't pretend he doesn't have a pretty similar attitude. ]

[His eyebrows shoot up in exaggerated surprise.]

You aren't going to argue that such an outlook is sad and pessimistic?

I'm not sure there's a difference between pessimistic and realistic.

Pessimism would be assuming that all systems are hostile and the ones that seem peaceful are just bad at trying to kill us.

Either way, if you don't get killed, you're pleasantly surprised.

I admit that I generally expect to not be actually killed. Unforgivably optimistic of me, I know.

I mean, it looks like it's working for you so far.

For the most part. [Except for that one time when it didn't, but there's a thing to never talk about.] You, I would guess, are a realist. Sensible, and probably not surprised often.

[ he... thinks? Who knows. Apparently he's going to be a rebel in a few years. ]

You are extremely agreeable. I'm going to begin suggesting increasingly ridiculous things until you disagree.

What did you think when you found yourself here, in another universe, presumably on a show? Did that come as a surprise?

I'm still not convinced I buy that they're making a holo. At least not one anyone watches. I guess I didn't believe it, but I'm pretty sure I'd've heard of someplace I recognized if this wasn't really a different galaxy.

I'm not certain that I believe in the show aspect either. I have been in other places like this one and that was never a part of it.

But that we are in a different universe... I don't doubt that at all.

A different galaxy at least. I dunno how much the difference even matters.

[ Either way, they're not getting home on their own power. ]

If we were to plan our own escape, the difference between going to another galaxy and going to another universe would be considerable!

[His enthusiasm is quick to die.]

Although escaping at all seems very unlikely, so maybe you're right. Maybe the difference is academic.
