[ Jim's staring seriously at the camera as the broadcast begins, concern visible on his features. He might be easily recognizable to most everyone on the Fleet, but as soon as he starts talking, it will become obvious that he is not the same man, or at least not having the very same memories. Not of this place, that's for sure. ]

My name is James T. Kirk. I'm... not entirely sure how I got here, but for what it's worth, I'm one of the new arrivals.

[ He presses his lips, glancing around. ] This isn't the first time I've been brought to a universe other than my own, but I was wondering if anyone else here has had a similar experience. Coming here from a place that's not your reality of origin.

[ A pause, ] Specifically, has anyone here heard of Riverview, or the Quarantine?

[ He can't help a hopeful look. A familiar face, any familiar face, will be welcome. He's looking for a specific one, admittedly, but he's not holding his breath on that one. ]

ACTION ▹ SS RED FISH

[ Once he makes that broadcast, he'll be exploring his new location, so he knows what he's dealing with. He can be found roaming the ship, poking his head into all the nooks and corners, and possibly trying to sneak his way into off-limits locations, if there are any. Stop him getting into trouble, or help him? Or just come say hi to a not-quite-new face. ]

That's a nice change.

[ He was starting to think he had no opportunities left for first impressions.

He takes the offered hand in a shake. ]

Jim. Since we're going with first names. [ And at least it's different from Captain Kirk. ]

Nice to meet you, Jim. Guessing you just got here?

[ Hey, there's always time for first impressions. ]

Yeah, very recently. Only had the time to hop over to another ship and come back so far, and make a quick broadcast.

[ He tips his head at Carl. ]

Nice to meet you too. So, what's your specialty aboard the ship?

I'm one of the engineers. Our Captain is the other one, though he's better at it than I am.

[ Then again, it helps to have a background in engineering things. ]

I know some basics, though I'm not sure if that'll be worth much here. I'm a pilot, here. The only one on board, from what I've gathered.

[ Jim can't imagine how this ship fared without one before he arrived. He almost feels bad for putting in a transfer request, but... he won't be kept away from Victor, now that he knows he's here. ]

We've had some come and go, before. I didn't know how to do any of this before, but we didn't have an engineer before, so I swapped jobs.

[winscenario]

Really? And you can just swap jobs?

[ Motioning ahead for Carl to walk with him, he starts on a slow stroll down the hallway. ]

Is it easy to do?

Sometimes. I think there are conditions for it.

[ He falls easily into step with Jim as they move down the hall. ]

The one I had when I got here was maintenance, so I guess they were similar enough for me to upgrade. We didn't have an engineer, so it was the right thing to do.

[winscenario]

That's very dutiful of you.

[ It's said as a compliment, and Jim smiles. No one here signed up to be on board these ships, after all. So yes, he finds it commendable that Carl feels this need to help, to be useful, even when he's not obligated to do so. ]

How do you like engineering so far? Are you good at it?

We would have been screwed if something happened and no one to fix it.

[ Carl thinks about it for a moment before looking back at Jim. ]

I'm passable at it, but I like it.

[winscenario]

Quite possibly, yes. Everyone's important on a crew, but without engineers, the ship won't even fly.

[ Jim nods. All things considered, 'passable' is pretty good here. ]

I know some basics, but I'm not familiar with this kind of technology. Think you can show me the ropes sometime, just so I have some understanding of how the main systems work?

If you want to, yeah. I won't be as good as some people, but if you want the very basics, I think I can do that.

That's fine. You have the augment for it, so that's one step ahead. Who knows, we might make it more of an exchange of knowledge. I'm not an engineer, but I could share what little I do know, and you might be able to adapt it to the technology here. How does that sound?
